Tate Wyman

He’s smart and fast.

Coupeville grad Tate Wyman, now a junior studying embedded systems engineering technology at Oregon Tech, had a busy, varied week.

Thursday he was one of 14 Hustlin’ Owl male track and field stars to be tabbed to the U.S. Bank Academic All-Cascade Collegiate Conference team, an honor reserved for student/athletes earning a 3.2 GPA or higher.

Then Saturday Wyman returned to the arena, competing at the Nancy and Norm Berney Classic in Salem, where he picked up 10 points for his team with a 3rd place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.35 seconds) and a 5th in the long jump (21 feet, 5.25 inches).

Oregon Tech held off meet host Corban 148-133 to win the men’s team title.

They had home field advantage and they claimed it.

Competing on their own oval Saturday, the Coupeville High School track and field squad dominated six other schools, sweeping to lopsided wins in the Cow Town Classic Invite.

The Wolf boys stormed to a massive win, piling up 235 points while runner-up Clallam Bay collected 85.

Lopez Island (58), Chief Leschi (48), Neah Bay (41), Forks (36), and Concrete (25) rounded out the competitors.

On the girls’ side of things, CHS finished with 196 points, with Forks (85), Lopez (84), and Neah Bay (84) bunched up in a second-place battle.

Clallam Bay (21), Chief Leschi (8), and Concrete (6) brought up the rear.

On the day Coupeville snagged 14 wins and 33 PRs, with Cyrus Sparacio (800, 1600, 3200), Kennedy O’Neill (100 and 300 Hurdles), Arianna Cunningham (Javelin, 4 x 100 Relay), and Wyatt Fitch-Marron (4 x 1, 4 x 4) winning multiple events.

Sparacio, just a freshman, hit PRs in all three of his events, as well.

While Fitch-Marron finished second in the high jump, the sophomore smashed his PR by four inches, elevating six feet, two inches.

That puts him just two inches away from the school record of 6-4, jointly held by the non-related Rich Wilson and Cael Wilson.

While the times were fast and the wins many, making the day a total success were the volunteers, who poured into Coupeville’s stadium ready and rarin’ to go on a sunny Saturday.

“A great big shout out to all our volunteers!” said CHS coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin. “Not one spot was empty!

“From the elementary school principal (Erica McColl) to Melissa and Brett Casey, to the many parents, family members, even a King (Randy) was present.

“EVERY position was filled. This helped with the meet running so smoothly.”

Fresh off their home success, Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, May 2, when it travels to Sammamish High School for the 22-team BCS Invitational, the final regular-season meet.

After that comes the league meet, districts, and, hopefully, the state championships.

Taygin Jump, ready to take on the world.

Ice Cube would agree, it was a good day for Taygin Jump.

The Coupeville grad, now a junior track and field star at Plattsburgh State, nailed top-two finishes in all three of her throwing events Friday at the SLU Twilight Invite in Canton, New York.

The former Wolf won the hammer throw, chucking her implement 125 feet, 11 inches, while also finishing second in the discus (93-06) and javelin (92-00).

Jump’s impressive performance helped carry the Cardinals to a second-place finish in the team standings at the meet, which was hosted by St. Lawrence College.

When she’s not busy chucking things, Aleksia and Khanor’s older sister is an honor student pursuing a degree in Environmental Planning and Management.

She’s still got it.

Coupeville grad Julie Wheat, a legend from her own time as a Wolf athlete, is operating as a shutterbug these days, and the track and field photos you see above and below come to us courtesy her.

Enjoy a range of events and a look at some of Coupeville’s best and brightest repping the red and black.

Lillian Ketterling gets airborne. (CHS Yearbook photo)

Every jump, every race changes something.

Or so it seems as the top performances statewide among 2B track and field athletes continue to ebb and flow as the spring plays out.

In the past week members of the Coupeville High School squad competed at two different meets in two different towns, and as we take a pause to scan the leader board, four Wolves are among the best of the best currently.

They aren’t the same four as a week ago, however, with sophomore Lillian Ketterling having moved back into the top 10 in the pole vault while freshman Cyrus Sparacio has, for the moment, been bumped out in the 1600.

Where things sit through April 20:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Tamsin Ward (9th) 30-10

Pole Vault — Lillian Ketterling (7th-tie) 8-00

BOYS:
