Emma Smith isn’t afraid of learning new things.

In the classroom or playing one of her many sports, the Coupeville Middle School eighth grader always keeps an open mind in her pursuit of knowledge.

“My favorite classes are history and science,” Smith said. “I love learning, no matter how confusing it can get.

“I love reading,” she added. “It’s my favorite thing to do whenever I’m alone or bored.”

Her pursuit of excellence has taken her to the volleyball court this fall, where she has emerged as one of the more dependable spikers, flopping between middle blocker and center back.

After picking up the game in sixth grade, she’s in her second year of playing on a team.

Smith’s passion for the sport was reinforced by a camp she attended in Oak Harbor that was run by Western Washington University.

“The thing I really enjoy about volleyball is that you have to work as a team if you want to win,” she said. “There can’t be one person that does all the work, it just won’t happen that way.

“The adrenaline rush is definitely my favorite though,” Smith added. “The feeling you get when you’re swinging at the ball is just so, so perfect…”

Smith, who has also competed in track for CMS and played volleyball with the Whidbey Fury, knows she’s a work in progress and wants to continue fine-tuning her rapidly-developing skills.

“Overall I’d say I’m pretty good on the net, and I’ve gotten some pretty good digs,” Smith said. “My serving has gotten 10 times better since last year, considering I couldn’t even serve overhand.

“I really want to work on passing, and even though I’m pretty good, I want to get better at hitting,” she added. “I think my goal is to get better at the sport overall. As a team, we all want to see more wins as we get better and more trusting towards each other.”

The deep friendships she has developed with many of her teammates makes the sport that much more fun.

“There are a few people who have made me who I am, starting with the people I’ve been with all through school — Maddy Hilkey, Ashley Menges, Lindsey Roberts, Sarah Wright and the new girl that instantly became my friend, Ashlie Shank,” Smith said.

Smith looks to family for guidance and high-level players for inspiration.

“My parents have made a huge impact,” she said. “Helping me by encouraging me to do my best and keep practicing even if I’m not in the mood.

“I also have some idols on the UW volleyball team, like Cassie Strickland,” Smith added. “Her services are so amazing and she has really good digs; my goal is to get as good as her.”

Keeping the rally going.

Keeping the rally going.

Things are starting to click as the season winds down.

Nearing the end of the middle school volleyball season, the CMS 8th grade varsity has hit a hot streak.

Sweeping visiting Northshore in straight sets Thursday, the Wolves captured their second straight win.

“The varsity really showed how much they have learned and have gained experience in some long volleys, staying with the ball, blocking and great digs,” said proud mom Kelly Crownover.

Her daughter, Veronica, and other stars like Kalia Littlejohn and Lindsey Roberts, will look to build on their hot streak when CMS closes the season at home Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Langley comes to town and action tips off at 3 PM, with four matches scheduled (7th grade JV, 7th varsity, 8th JV and 8th varsity).

"Niccceeeee..."

“Niccceeeee…”

Madeline Strasburg is gold.

The Coupeville High School senior, aka Maddie Big Time, excels in high pressure athletic situations and in having her photo snapped.

She may not quite be to the level of McKayla “Million Dollar Arm” Bailey, the one-true Photo Bomb Queen, but then, who is?

But Strasburg is undeniably in the top 1% of photo op lovin’ superstars.

You can see that in the photos above, which come from Tuesday night’s Wolf volleyball match against visiting Bellevue Christian.

What can I say?

Athletes come and go, and there will always be talent on display.

But when Strasburg, Bailey and Co. graduate, taking their ability to produce snappy picture after picture off with them, there will be epic shoes left to fill.

I’m sorry. I can’t talk about this any more. I may cry at the thought of having to write more words to fill the gaping hole left by the loss of sure-thing winner photos.

Don’t mind me. I’ll be in the corner, praying for a freshman or two to step up and seize the mantle. I have high hopes for Luke Merriman … perhaps he will save the day.

Anyway, while I whine on, you can pop over and see more John Fisken photos (and possibly purchase some, which helps fund scholarships for CHS student/athletes) at:

A Wolf Buddie displays the sign she made to support her team.

Very few people can pull off the full-body forward cartwheel at max speed on the volleyball court quite like Valen Trujillo.

The Coupeville High School sophomore is the master at flinging her body every which way in pursuit of balls, even when she has to go head over tail to make the shot.

It’s a skill she showed off often Tuesday night, as her dives grew more and more desperate in an effort to counter the spikes leveled by visiting Bellevue Christian.

Unfortunately, while she’ll probably have some new floor burns to display in the morning, she couldn’t single-handedly stem the tide, and super-slow starts in every set eventually cost the Wolves.

The 25-10, 25-17, 25-18 non-conference loss dropped Coupeville to 0-5.

The match was the first in nearly two weeks for CHS (it hadn’t played since Sept. 25) and the Wolves were rusty.

All three sets featured a disturbing pattern. Dig a big early hole, start to rally, then run out of time and points.

Bellevue opened 8-1, 9-1 and 7-1 leads in consecutive sets, never allowing Coupeville to hold a lead at any point in the match.

Things warmed up a bit after the first set, which had a few nice serves and a floor-shaking spike from Kacie Kiel and little else positive to talk about.

After falling behind in the second, the Wolves finally strung together a bit of a rally.

A 7-2 run, punctuated by a service ace from Trujillo that kissed the back corner of the court and a perfectly nicked tip from Hailey Hammer that won the match’s longest back-and-forth, seemed to promise a revival.

Coupeville fought off two set points, the second when McKenzie Bailey soared up into the heavens to deliver a knee-shredding kill, but the Vikings lead was too substantial to overcome.

Cue the third set and the same exact result, almost play by play.

Down 15-5, the Wolves rallied for a bit, with one play in particular standing out.

Trujillo went head over heels to save a ball with winner written all over it, giving Coupeville time to keep the play alive.

Two hits later, Hammer, with her back to the net, dropped a winner over her head and the net, perfectly splitting two defenders who both whiffed while running into each other.

But again, too little, too late, as the Wolves held off match point three times before succumbing on the fourth try.

To go with her floor burns, Trujillo was credited with 17 digs, while Hammer (four kills), Kiel (two kills, four service aces) and Madeline Strasburg (two kills, two aces) led the stat sheet.

Freshman Lauren Rose dealt out a team-high seven assists from her setter position.

The match ended the only way it could — with a bang.

Rising off the floor in unison, Wolf teammates Katrina McGranahan and Lauren Grove teamed up to emphatically stuff a would-be spike from Bellevue Christian, sending the ball skidding off the floor and their teammates jumping into each others arms.

The 25-15, 25-22, 15-13 win Tuesday over the visiting Vikings lifted the Coupeville High School JV spikers to 2-2 and left coach Amy King sporting a smile.

And why not? Her squad played inspired ball for much of the match, controlling play and pulling off several superb plays.

While the joint stuff at the end rattled the building, the final point of the first set was probably even more beautiful.

Allison Wenzel, sliding across the floor, sliced a service return that skidded across the net, tiptoed through three Vikings and caught the very last flake of paint on the sideline for a winner that got the biggest roar of the night from the crowd.

It capped a first set that started as a runaway (the Wolves jumped out to an 18-4 lead behind precision serving from Payton Aparicio and McGranahan and back-to-back gorgeous, point-winning tips off the fingertips of Kameryn St Onge), turned a bit sticky, then got back on track.

Holding things together was Grove, who calmly directed traffic, at least when she was on her feet.

Willing to sacrifice her body for the good of the team, she frequently risked life and limb chasing balls, usually saving even the ones dead set on getting away.

The next two sets played out remarkably similar for the Wolves.

They jumped on Bellevue quickly, let up a bit, then put the other foot down. Hard.

The second set opened with Maggie Crimmins dropping in a string of winners on serve, before McGranahan unleashed a spike that seemed to be flying out of bounds, only to catch the very back corner of the court at the last second.

As the linesman jumped and waved like a madman, unable to fully believe the miracle he had witnessed, the last ounce of strength crumbled  from the Vikings.

Bellevue briefly rallied, but Aparicio was lights-out at the service stripe, denying that dream.

From there, Coupeville cruised home with the win, getting several big-time plays in the final set.

Grove won a frantic tip-fest at the net in which both sides ricocheted the ball back-and-forth for several moments before the Wolf sophomore deposited a winner just out of reach of her counterparts.

St Onge, becoming ever more confident with her power game as the season rolls on, once again hit on back-to-back winners, Hope Lodell was everywhere at once, slicin’ ‘n dicin’ as only “The Surgeon” can, and all that was left for Bellevue’s JV to do was decide what snacks they would buy at the concession stand post-match.

Cause, otherwise, they were done.
