Wolf 7th graders stage a rally.

They had to travel to get it, but that first win was out there waiting for them.

On the road in Sultan Tuesday, the Coupeville Middle School 8th grade varsity volleyball team used stellar defensive play to surge to its first victory of the season.

Winning in straight sets, the Wolves bounced the host Turks 25-11, 25-13, 15-12 to give first-year coach Sadi Foltz her initial triumph.

The 7th grade JV split sets, dropping its opener 20-11 before bouncing back for a 20-16 win.

Coupeville’s other two squads took losses, with the 7th grade varsity falling 25-15 and 25-17 before taking the third set 15-12 and the 8th grade JV being nipped 20-5, 20-11.

After 12 days off, the Wolf spikers get back at it tonight when they host Bellevue Christian.

The schedule has been sort of odd this season.

With Coupeville High School adjusting to a new league, less conference games and a more jumbled non-conference schedule, there have been some weird gaps between games.

At least it seems that way.

Case in point, the Wolf volleyball squad (0-4) hasn’t played in 12 days.

They return to the court tonight (JV 5 PM, varsity 6:15), when they host Bellevue Christian. Then, they’re off for another six days.

The CHS soccer squad (3-2) suddenly added a new game to the schedule, plugging in a non-conference affair at Oak Harbor tonight. Kickoff is 6 PM.

That game will bring together a huge chunk of the GU18 Whidbey Islanders squad, with Wolves like Micky LeVine and Jacki Ginnings facing off with their select teammates who play for OHHS such as Becca Pabona and Jacalyn Hefflefinger.

Football (3-2) and boys’ tennis (2-4) both return to action Friday.

The gridiron squad travels to Port Townsend (5 PM kickoff), while the netters will welcome the Chimacum/Port Townsend combined team, with first serve at 4 PM.

Young spikers continue to grow!!

The learning season continues.

The Coupeville Middle School volleyball squads absorbed more losses Monday, this time on the road in Granite Falls, but a lot of the scores continue to get closer.

The bright spot was the 7th grade JV, which split sets and walked off with a tie.

That team fell 20-6 in the opener, then bounced back to claim the second set 20-14.

Other scores on the day:

7th grade varsity lost 25-9, 15-4

8th grade JV lost 20-12, 20-7

8th grade varsity lost 25-13, 25-19, 15-7

The Wolves get right back at it Tuesday, traveling to the wilds of Sultan, before hosting Northshore Thursday (3 PM).

Sometimes you can learn more from a loss than a win.

Hopefully that’s the case for the next generation of Wolf volleyball stars, who showed promise and flashes of brilliance in an afternoon that ended with a string of losses Thursday.

Playing in Lakewood, all four Coupeville Middle School spiker squads fell, though the eighth grade varsity did pull out a set win.

If you hold it, they will come.

Coupeville High School’s volleyball players and coaches held a free clinic for local kids in grade K-6 Thursday and got a sizable turnout.

Wolf coach Breanne Smedley estimated the turnout at between 25-30 young players.

“It was great!,” she said. “The CHS players did a great job of running the courts as the kids rotated through skill stations.

“The kids and players both had a blast and learned a lot!,” Smedley added. “It was great to see so many youngsters excited about volleyball and our volleyball players stepping up to lead them.”

The Wolves will host a second free K-6 clinic Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10-11:30 AM.
