It was a tale of two halves – with one much better than the other.

The Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team brought its season to a close Friday night, falling 51-26 to visiting Friday Harbor in a game which got away from the young Wolves.

CHS, which finishes 4-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-8 overall, played strongly in the first half, but cold shooting after halftime doomed any hopes for the hometown squad.

The Wolves trailed just 10-6 after one quarter of action, with Mahkai Myles rattling the rim for a pair of three-balls to account for all of his team’s scoring.

From there, Friday Harbor edged Coupeville 13-12 in the second frame, before slamming its collective feet through the gas pedal in the third and fourth quarters,

A 15-8 Wolverine run coming out of the halftime break hurt, while a 13-0 romp in the final frame made the game score seem much more lopsided than it had earlier.

Malachi Somes split time between varsity and JV, providing scrappy defense at every level.

Myles and Riley Lawless led CHS with eight points apiece, while Jayden Little (3), Malachi Somes (3), Easton Green (2), and Davin Houston (2) also scored.

Little rippled the nets for his first three-ball of the season to give his point total a little extra spicy flavor.

Kyle McCrimmon, Khanor Jump, Liam Blas, Sage Arends, Carson Grove, and Nathan Coxsey also saw floor time for a young squad which often looked very good this season.

While the finale wasn’t what the Wolves might have hoped for, the future remains bright.

Final season scoring stats:

Davin Houston – 92
Mahkai Myles – 68

Liam Blas – 42

Taygin Jump

Staten Island is home to more than just a ferry owned by Saturday Night Live stars.

Friday it was also the site of the FastTrack National Invitational, a collegiate track and field meet which drew a large group of competitors.

In the thick of things was Coupeville grad Taygin Jump, another person familiar with ferries from her time on Whidbey.

Now a sophomore at Plattsburgh State, the former Wolf let loose in the weight throw and shot put.

Jump chucked the first implement an even 40 feet, while tossing the second orb a solid 27-3.50.

This is her second indoor track season as a member of Cardinal Nation, following on the heels of her volleyball and track and field exploits at CHS.

When she’s not throwing things, the oldest of Phil and Christina Jump’s three children is pursuing a degree in Environmental Planning & Management/Geology.

The Rock will be repped at the season’s last game.

While no Coupeville or Oak Harbor players made the cut this year, South Whidbey senior quarterback Cody Redford has been selected to participate in the Earl Barden Classic.

The game, which goes down June 21 in Yakima, is an all-star event featuring seniors from 2A, 1A, 2B, and 1B football programs.

In the past, Coupeville stars such as Mike Bagby, Dominic Coffman, Josh Bayne, and Ryan Labrador have received the call.

Redford, a dual threat both as a runner and passer, led South Whidbey to back-to-back wins in the annual Bucket Game with Coupeville the past two seasons, and is currently playing basketball for the Falcons.

Among his projected teammates at the summer game, if everyone accepts their invite, are gridiron stars from two-time 2A state champ Anacortes, as well as 2B powers Onalaska and Napavine.

Also on the West roster are players from two other 1A teams Coupeville played this past fall — Klahowya and Cedar Park Christian-Bothell.

She’s the best, by far.

Beating her nearest competitor by more than two-and-a-half feet Tuesday, Coupeville grad Taygin Jump claimed the title in the weight throw at an indoor collegiate event in New York.

The former Wolf ace launched her implement 42 feet, 6.75 feet at the Plattsburgh State Tuesday Track and Field Meet, holding off a field of eight rivals while establishing a new college PR.

Jump, a sophomore studying Environmental Planning & Management/Geology, also finished 9th in the shot put, lobbing it 24-06.25.

Aleksia and Khanor’s older sister was a two-sport star during her CHS days, playing volleyball (both school and club) and track and field.

Every point counts.

And hopefully none get left behind.

As a basketball season unfolds, keeping track of all the scorebooks — some beautifully rendered, others not so much — can be a daunting task.

But the “reward” is seeing a full campaign of hoops laid out in front of you in black and white numbers, forever stamped in history.

Or some such nonsense.

The look you give when you realize your point totals are being controlled by a scorekeeper in another town … and that scorekeeper is questionable at best.

Anyway, as we head into the regular season finales Friday against Friday Harbor, here’s where Coupeville High School players currently sit.
