They win in every way.

Coupeville High School volleyball players have combined to go 24-1 this season, with the varsity at 13-0 and JV at 11-1 heading into the regular season finale.

As the Wolves prepare for that showdown with Sultan, which arrives Monday, Nov. 4, they showed up for practice Thursday in a celebratory mood.

Combining Halloween with spikes and sets, the net crew put a different spin on the workday.

It’s not over just yet.

The battle between Coupeville and Friday Harbor to decide the Northwest 2B/1B League football crown, and claim a playoff berth, will go to overtime.

Or a tiebreaker, more to the point.

That’s thanks to Friday Harbor rallying from a touchdown down Thursday to claim a 17-13 Halloween win on its home turf.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-1 in league play, 5-4 overall, while the Wolverines get to 1-1, 3-5.

CHS had the edge going in Thursday, having won 18-5 when the teams squared off in Cow Town four weeks ago.

With another victory, the Wolves would have collected a season sweep, claimed the NWL crown, and punched their playoff ticket to face a team from District 4 with a state tourney berth at stake.

Instead, Coupeville and Friday Harbor will both travel this coming Monday, Nov. 4 to a neutral field at La Conner for a tiebreaker to decide things.

A 5:30 PM kickoff has been confirmed by CHS Athletic Director Brad Sherman.

The plan is to play two 12-minute “halves,” so essentially a half game. Winner claims District 1’s playoff spot, and loser does not.

Thursday’s regular season finale, which was moved up by a day because of the possibility of a tiebreaker needing to be played, broke in favor of Coupeville early.

Junior quarterback Chase Anderson scampered in for his team-leading twelfth touchdown in the first quarter, then mashed the PAT kick to put the Wolves up 7-0.

That lead held up until midway through the second quarter, when Friday Harbor rammed home a score to knot things up.

Tied at 7-7 at the half, the two squads played a scoreless third quarter, before suddenly getting offensive in the fourth.

Friday Harbor claimed the lead at 10-7 on a Victor Valasquez field goal, before pushing the lead out to 17-7 with just under three minutes to play.

Anderson gave Coupeville a fighting chance, lofting a TD pass to Jack Porter, who broke into the end zone for the eighth time during his senior campaign.

The Wolves failed to convert the PAT however, and time ran out on them, denying them a chance to claim the league title outright.

Instead, they will regroup and get ready to rumble one more time with everything on the line.

Hark, the hardwood calls.

The first day of high school basketball practice in Washington state is Monday, Nov. 18, with games kicking off for the Coupeville High School girls a hair over two weeks later.

The Wolves are set for a 19-game slate right now, with 10 of those contests against their Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

CHS squares off with 1B schools Darrington and Concrete once, while lacing up the sneakers twice against its 2B foes — Orcas Island, La Conner, Friday Harbor, and Mount Vernon Christian.

The schedule includes a two-game late-December trip to Central Washington University for Megan Richter’s varsity squad, plus a smattering of new-to-us opponents such as Morton-White Pass and Wahkiakum.

High school basketball practice kicks off across the state Monday, Nov. 18, with the first games for Coupeville arriving a day or two into December.

As it stands now, the Wolf boys have a full 20-game regular season, with half of those games against Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

CHS squares off with each of the other four 2B schools — La Conner, Mount Vernon Christian, Orcas Island, and Friday Harbor — twice, while only playing once against 1B foes Darrington and Concrete.

The Wolves also travel to Eastern Washington the last weekend in December for two games on the courts at Central Washington University and pick up several new non-conference opponents.

Teams like Morton-White Pass, Wahkiakum, and Napavine all offer Brad Sherman’s squad a chance to face state tourney-level competition, while getting Coupeville a higher profile among basketball observers.

Get ’em the big bus.

Coming off of an impressive performance Wednesday in the rain at Tri-Districts, the Coupeville High School cross country squad is sending 11 runners on to the state meet.

Wolf running guru Elizabeth Bitting will be taking four girls and seven boys to Pasco for the 2B championships, which are set for Saturday, Nov. 9.

That’s the most state meet qualifiers in one season since CHS revived its cross country program in 2017 after a two-decade layoff.

Coupeville is sending its entire boys’ team to state for the second time in as many seasons, while four Wolf girls made it through as individual qualifiers.

Conditions were wet, wet, wet at Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood as runners from Districts 1, 2, and 3 came together to battle for trail supremacy on a 5,000-meter course.

The top two boys’ teams and top three girls’ teams punched their state ticket as a group, and Coupeville almost got both of its groups through.

The boys, who placed five runners in the top 10, finished 2nd in the team standings, narrowly nipped 31-34 by Northwest 2B/1B League archrival Mount Vernon Christian for the crown.

Friday Harbor (68) was a distant third.

On the girls’ side, Pope John Paul II, led by defending state champ Ruby Henry, ran away with the team title, racking up just 30 points.

MVC (82) and Friday Harbor (84) also earned state berths, with Coupeville (98) notching fourth place in the team standings.

While the Wolf girls didn’t advance as a complete unit, the top 21 individual runners also earned state invitations, with freshman Devon Wyman literally nabbing the last spot by outsprinting a Friday Harbor rival by five seconds.

From Coupeville’s 11 state meet qualifiers, senior Carson Field will be making his third trip to the biggest run of the year.

Landon Roberts, George Spear, Ezekiel Allen, Kenneth Jacobsen, and Thomas Strelow are now two-timers, while Wyman, Mikayla Wagner, Ethan Walling, Aleksia Jump, and Aleera Kent will make their state cross country meet debut.
