The community dinner is back.

For the first time since the pandemic threw a wrench into things, the Coupeville Connected Food Program is holding a fundraiser full of tasty treats.

Chef Andreas Wurzrainer and his staff will tickle the tastebuds Oct. 5.

The event, which goes down in the Coupeville High School cafeteria (501 S. Main St.), runs from 5:30-6:30 PM.

Suggested donation is $6 per person or $25 for a family.

“We are super excited to have an anonymous donor who will be matching any donations,” Wurzrainer said.

“All donations will be used exclusively to buy locally,” he added.

“To continue our strong relationships with local farmers and vendors and continue our mission of locally sourced scratch cooked school lunches.”

The menu includes pasta with meatballs from 3 Sisters Family Farms and marinara from tomatoes grown by the school farm.

There will also be prairie farm salad, kale salad with apples and cranberries, and a DaSilva Farms blueberry cupcake.

Big brawl, narrow loss

It was a brawl on the hardwood.

In the first of two regular-season clashes between next-door neighbors, the South Whidbey High School varsity volleyball squad eked out a tough four-set win Monday, rallying to top visiting Coupeville.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves to 1-1, though they’ll have an immediate chance to bounce back thanks to a Tuesday trip to Bothell to face Cedar Park Christian.

Coupeville came out strongly in Langley, winning the opening set 25-15.

After that, however, South Whidbey found a winning strategy, capturing the next three sets 26-24, 25-22, 25-17.

Which means, even in a loss, the Wolves were only outscored by three points, with the Falcons holding a 91-88 advantage at the end.

CHS coach Cory Whitmore is already looking ahead to the rematch in Coupeville, which arrives Oct. 1.

“I’m excited that we get another chance to face them again, and I know the girls are too,” he said.

Monday’s match started out as one thing, then took a detour, with the Wolves not quite able to get the car fully back on the road.

“We played lights out in the first set and let them crawl back into the game in the second,” Whitmore said. “With some untimely errors and them taking care of the ball, they overtook in the second.

“We fought hard and kept it competitive in the third set, but our four service errors and a few attacking errors gave them chances to keep their three-point lead on us.

“In the fourth we had a lot of fight but lost gas, as again, some serves and attacks that had worked all night, weren’t there.”

“It was so fun!”

Ashley Menges has spent a good chunk of her volleyball career beating South Whidbey, first as a player, now as a coach.

Chalk one more W up for Smashley, as her Coupeville High School JV spikers went to Langley and swept the Falcons Monday night.

Playing with precision and power, the Wolves rolled 25-15, 25-12, 25-17.

The non-conference victory lifts Coupeville’s JV to a crisp 2-0 on the season, with another road match set for Tuesday against Cedar Park Christian-Bothell.

“Throughout the first two sets, I really couldn’t have asked for much more than I did in the very beginning,” Menges said.

“They kept great communication and energy for both sets, played clean and had very little errors throughout, and they just had fun, which is really when they play at their best.”

Coupeville got solid work from everyone on the floor, with a few really grabbing the spotlight in the Island rivalry clash.

Madison (McMillan) was playing lights out tonight; she was on fire all over the court,” Menges said. “Taylor (Brotemarkle) was passing great all night and made a lot of really great defensive plays.

Katie (Marti), of course, was dishing it out for all our hitters, which I always love to see.”

Teagan Calkins, ready to drop the hammer.

The really young guns were in top form as well, with freshman Teagan Calkins rattling the Falcons with a team-high 11 kills.

All in all, it made for a pleasant experience for Menges, who is kicking off her third season as JV coach in fine form.

“It was just so much fun to watch,” she said.

“I can already see what we’ve been working on in practice is paying off, and we’re excited to see them (South Whidbey) again when they come to town!”

Things are starting to get busy.

The week ahead features action for all five active Coupeville High School fall sports teams, including the first game for boys soccer.

Those booters finally hit the pitch Sept. 13, when they travel to Mount Vernon Christian.

After that comes their home debut Sept. 17 against Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.

Meanwhile, Wolf football hosts Sultan Sept. 16 and cross country travels to South Whidbey Sept. 17.

Girls soccer and volleyball are the busiest Coupeville teams, playing three times between now and next Saturday.

The pitch queens host Oak Harbor Sept. 13, travel to University Prep Sept. 15, and host Ocosta Sept. 17.

Wolf volleyball will hit the road all week, with each trip further away.

The spikers play at South Whidbey Sept. 12, travel to Cedar Park Christian-Bothell the next day, then cap things with an appearance at the SunDome Volleyball Festival in Yakima Sept. 16.
