A trio will lead them.

As it preps for its first home meet of the season (2:45 PM Wednesday), the Coupeville High School track and field team currently has three athletes vying for the top of the leader-board.

With two meets under their belts, Wolf senior Jacob Smith and juniors Lindsey Roberts and Danny Conlisk have all posted times which place them among the top 10 performances by a 1A athlete this spring.

Smith is a two-timer, currently sitting 3rd in the 200, with a time of 23.27 seconds, and sixth in the 100 at 11.57.

Roberts is sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.17) and Conlisk is 10th in the 400 (53.53).

There are six more regular-season meets after Wednesday’s home bout, where CHS welcomes Chimacum, Port Townsend, Klahowya and Mount Vernon Christian to town.

So, plenty of time for the Wolf trio (and others) to make even more of an impact on the state-wide standings as the season develops.

Smith finished 3rd and 4th at the state meet in the 200 the past two seasons, while Conlisk was 5th in the 400 a year ago.

Roberts claimed 4th in the hurdles in 2016, and made it back to Cheney as a sophomore, but was tripped up (literally) in the finals, finishing out of the medal count in the event.

They’ve doubled their numbers.

With a second meet in the books, the Coupeville High School track and field team now has eight Wolves sitting somewhere in the top 10 for performances by all 1A athletes.

That’s up from four after the first round of competition.

Showing remarkable balance, the elite eight are split between four girls and four boys, with every class represented.

Seniors Jacob Martin, Lauren Grove and Mitchell Carroll are joined by junior Jacob Smith, sophomores Lindsey Roberts and Danny Conlisk and freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem.

It’s early. Like, really, really early.

But with one official meet under their belt in 2017, four Coupeville High School track stars have already staked their place among the best in the state.

Seniors Jacob Martin and Mitchell Carroll, junior Jacob Smith and sophomore Lindsey Roberts are all currently sitting in the top 10 among all 1A athletes in at least one event.

As the Wolves prepare to head to Port Angeles Thursday for a six-team meet, a quick look at the CHS front-runners:

The relay teams were on fire.

Competing against three 2A schools Thursday at North Kitsap, the Coupeville High School girls 4 x 200 relay unit put together the fastest time run this season by a 1A school.

Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt, Lindsey Roberts and Makana Stone toasted their big school foes, zipping across the finish line in 1:48.40 for the Wolves lone win on the day.

The same foursome also finished second in the 4 x 100, trailing just Olympic.

Coupeville’s time of 52.17 is the second-fastest by a 1A school this season (trailing just Lynden Christian), while Olympic’s winning time of 51.75 is second-fastest in 2A.

The relay rumblings capped a day in which 20 Wolves combined to set 30 PRs.

Senior thrower Dominic Dausey set career bests in shot put, discus and javelin to lead the way, while eight other CHS athletes achieved a pair of PRs.

While Coupeville got strong individual efforts, it didn’t have the depth to upend North Kitsap, Sequim or Olympic in team scoring battles.
