It was a back-and-forth brawl.

Two closely matched varsity volleyball squads went spike for spike Tuesday on Orcas Island, with the host Vikings eking out a five-set thriller against visiting Coupeville.

The Wolves had to rally from a nine-point deficit in the fourth set to even keep things alive, and did, before running out of steam at the end of a 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 15-10 rumble.

“It was a really hard-fought battle,” said CHS coach Scout Smith. “The girls showed lot of grit and determination.

“Lots of props to Orcas Island – they are well-coached and today they got the best of us.”

While the loss drops her young squad to 2-8 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-9-1 overall, Smith prizes the growth she sees, which speaks well for the future as the Wolves rebuild and reload.

“I’m very proud of the fight I saw from our team today,” Smith said.

Coupeville has one regular season match left on the schedule — a non-conference road trip to Sultan next Monday, Nov. 3.

Tuesday stats:

Haylee Armstrong — 13 kills, 13 digs, 1 assist, 2 solo blocks
Teagan Calkins — 18 kills, 39 digs, 2 assists, 2 aces
Ari Cunningham — 5 kills, 3 digs, 3 block assists, 2 aces
Lexis Drake — 3 kills, 3 digs, 2 assists, 2 block assists
Adeline Maynes — 11 digs, 4 assists, 4 aces
Dakota Strong — 2 digs
Tenley Stuurmans — 7 kills, 11 digs, 33 assists, 1 block assist, 1 ace
Sydney Van Dyke — 1 dig

JV:

Time ran out on the Wolves.

With the varsity playing first, and going a full five sets, the JV spikers only had time for one set before having to leg it back to the ferry.

Orcas captured that frame 25-12, but as the “official” recorder of CHS athletics, I’m not counting it as a loss, as we all know the Wolves would have come roaring back to take sets #2 and #3 and net a season sweep against the Vikings.

Don’t like my ruling? Start your own blog, Orcas.

Tuesday (limited) stats:

Willow Leedy-Bonifas — 1 kill, 1 dig
Emma Leavitt — 1 assist, 1 ace
Kennedy O’Neill — 1 assist, 1 ace

The stats speak for themselves.

While Coupeville High School volleyball players wait for Thursday’s home finale, we offer up-to-the-moment numbers for varsity and JV, allowing fans to measure where the Wolves sit 80% of the way through the regular season.

Now, we could write more words here, but didn’t someone say something about letting the stats do the talking?

Ari Cunningham rises up to deliver a kill. (Julie Wheat photo)

Some joy; some pain.

Playing on Friday Harbor Tuesday afternoon, the Coupeville High School volleyball squads split their showdowns with the host Wolverines as they reached the two-thirds mark of the regular season.

The Wolf varsity, rebuilding after major losses to graduation, hung tough all match, but ultimately fell 25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 25-16, giving the two schools a split in their season series.

With the loss, CHS, the defending Northwest 2B/1B League champs, slips to 1-5 in conference action this time around, 3-6-1 overall.

Coupeville still has a shot to get back to .500 in league play, but needs to win out the remainder of the way, starting with another road trip, this one to play Mount Vernon Christian next Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Meanwhile, the Wolf JV is soaring, having won five of its last six to get to 4-1 in NWL rumbles, 6-2 overall.

Tuesday, the CHS second squad bounced Friday Harbor 25-15, 25-18.

Just getting on the floor against the Wolverines was a bonus as well, as Coupeville’s JV had to sit out the first meeting between the schools due to their rivals not having a full roster at that moment.

Young guns, having some fun.

That’s not just lyrics from an extra-bouncy 1982 song by Wham, but also an apt description of Saturday’s track and field meet.

Coupeville High School sent its young bunch on the road for the Stanwood Freshman/Sophomore Showcase, returning with 26 PRs and a win in the 110 hurdles from Axel Marshall.

Competing against a packed field of bigger schools, the Wolves claimed seventh place in the freshman boys’ team standings and eighth among sophomores, while the CHS girls were ninth best in both competitions.

Lake Stevens (boys) and Stanwood (girls) finished atop the reader board for freshmen, with Arlington coming out on top in both sophomore battles.

Marshall narrowly missed a double dip, finishing 2nd in the 300 hurdles, while Wyatt Fitch-Marron was 2nd in the freshman high jump.

Toss in some third and fourth-place finishes, plus a lot of personal bests, and the young Wolves made their mark in the big time.

“Great showing by our freshman and sophomore athletes today, well done!” said CHS coach Bob Martin. “The future is looking bright!”

With Spring Break upon them, the Wolves, young or old, don’t have another meet for a bit.

Coupeville returns to action as a complete team Thursday, April 10, when it travels to Shoreline to join Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Shorecrest, and Shorewood for an afternoon of competition.
