We’re trending upward.

The undefeated Coupeville High School boys basketball team, enjoying its best start in two decades-plus, continues to climb in the rankings.

The Wolves, who are 6-0 heading into a big showdown with Mount Vernon Christian, moved from #4 to #3 among all 2B schools when Evans Rankings released its latest numbers Sunday night.

Coupeville passed Lake Roosevelt, which suffered back-to-back losses and plunged from #2 to #13 in the rankings.

Chief Leschi (7-0) holds on to the top spot in 2B, with Ilwaco (8-0) moving up a rung to #2. Okanogan (9-1) and Kalama (5-1) round out the top five.

We’re now three weeks into the rankings, which are the work of noted numbers cruncher Matthew Evans.

A writer and editor whose work has appeared in publications such as Rant Sports and Stoppage Time Soccer, he had Coupeville at #6 first time out.

Two weeks later, the Wolves are knocking on the penthouse door.

La Conner and Friday Harbor — Coupeville’s fellow 2B schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League — currently sit at #33 and #46, respectively.

In the 1B rankings, Mount Vernon Christian is #11, with Orcas Island (#22), Darrington (#27), and Concrete (#47) on the chase.

On the girls side of things, La Conner, which rolled to 10-0 with lopsided wins over Coupeville and Concrete this past week, holds at #4.

The Wolves slip two spots from #22 to #24, with Friday Harbor down at #49.

MVC’s girls, who were obliterated by La Conner earlier this year, hold on to the #1 ranking in 1B, with Darrington (#33), Concrete (#38), and Orcas Island (#41) rounding out NWL teams.

Wolf boys atop league standings

It was the perfect storm, if you wanted very few games played.

The aftereffects of snow and ice mixed with the never-ending pandemic shuffle to keep most Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams off the court this past week.

On the boys side of things, only one of nine scheduled games was actually played, with Coupeville running La Conner off the floor.

Things were slightly more active for girls hoops squads, with an emphasis on the word slightly.

La Conner KO’d Coupeville’s girls, while Mount Vernon Christian blasted Concrete a few days later.

Then, Saturday night, La Conner broke triple-digits, shellacking Concrete in a savage 104-14 win.

Other than that, six of nine scheduled games failed to have a tip-off.

The week ahead is pretty barren, as well, at least for Coupeville, which currently only has one set of games on the schedule.

The Wolves host MVC Tuesday, Jan. 11, with the boys game a showdown for sole possession of first-place in the NWL.

After that, barring pesky Covid positives, or frogs raining down from the skies, CHS goes full-tilt, with four games in five days between Jan. 18-22.

Maybe.

Rattle the rim, flip the net

A few more shots tumbled through the net.

Snow and pandemic protocols reduced a three-game week into a one-game week for Coupeville High School basketball teams as they eased their way back onto the floor after the holidays.

But the Wolves did get contests against La Conner in the books, resulting in two wins and two losses.

As we aim towards next week, and the promise once more of actual games, a look at season-to-date scoring stats for all four CHS hoops squads.

Winter weather erases hoops games

“Well, if it’s not Covid, it’s something else!”

The steady buzzing sound you hear this winter is the sound of Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith’s phone, as the basketball schedule changes nearly every hour.

The latest upheaval doesn’t involve the pandemic but will still cost the Wolf hoops squads a game.

Former league rival Sultan, who Coupeville was scheduled to play next Saturday, Jan. 15, is still fighting through the aftereffects of the recent snow/ice storms and is starting to hit crunch time.

“They are getting backed up in their league games, and, like us, their league games take precedence over their non-league games,” Smith said.

So, off the schedule goes what would have been a road trip for the Coupeville boys, and home games for the Wolf girls.

CHS hoops teams flip schedule

Coupeville High School basketball fans will have an extra chance to watch their teams play in person this week.

The Wolves, who were already set to host La Conner Tuesday and Orcas Island Saturday, are adding home tilts with Friday Harbor on Thursday.

Water issues related to frozen pipes on Friday Harbor are the reason for the change.

With Thursday’s games now at home (4:00 for varsity girls and JV boys, 5:30 for boys varsity/girls JV), Coupeville will travel to Friday Harbor Feb. 4 for the second meeting of the season.

That throws off Senior Night for both CHS teams, as the original plan called for that event to happen on that night.

Replacement date(s) for the festivities will be announced once CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith’s cell phone stops buzzing.

With the Friday Harbor flip, the Coupeville boys get to open the new year with four-straight home games, but are also scheduled to play their final six, and eight of their last nine, on the road.

The Wolf girls get five straight, and seven of their next eight at home, with their final four away from Whidbey.

Though, the schedule will likely still change more, as both CHS programs had games postponed at the end of 2021.

The Coupeville boys had a league contest at Mount Vernon Christian and a non-conference home tussle with South Whidbey pushed due to Covid protocols, while the Wolf girls called off their trip to Langley to play the Falcons.

 

UPDATE (1:30 PM – Tuesday):

Orcas basketball has a “Covid situation,” so Saturday’s games are postponed, and will be rescheduled.

 

UPDATE (1:50 PM – Tuesday):

Postponed Coupeville vs. South Whidbey hoops games from end of ’21 won’t be rescheduled, as first priority is to reschedule league games being thrown around by Covid/weather.

Jan. 22 games against SW (girls home, boys away) still on — next door neighbors just won’t play twice this year.
