Everyone is chipping in to help Bennett Boyles.

As the 11-old Coupeville basketball player enters his third week of treatments for tumors on his brain stem, efforts to help him and his family continue.

Ciao, Mark Laska’s Italian restaurant (701 N. Main St.) is hosting a “Bounce for Bennett” fundraiser Sunday, July 17 from noon-6 PM.

Pizza will be sold by the slice and kids can play in bounce houses which will be on location ($5 for a short romp, $20 for all-day access).

Money raised will go to help Boyles‘ family, including mom Lucienne Rivera, who is commuting back and forth to Seattle to be with her son.

If you can’t be at Ciao Sunday, you can help out with financial donations, gas cards, ferry passes, gift certificates for food or prayers for the family.

Get well cards and posters are also greatly appreciated.

Items can be dropped off at Ebey Academy (140 SE Terry Road), right across from the high school.

Bennett Boyles is one of the happiest kids in Coupeville.

A huge smile dotting his face every time you see him, Boyles was part of this year’s 6th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad, where his enthusiasm served him well.

But Bennett has also been slowed by a battle with autoimmune encephalitis, one which has taken a bad turn in recent weeks.

Doctors have found inoperable tumors on his brain stem, and Boyles is scheduled for six weeks of radiation therapy at Children’s Hospital in Seattle.

It’s now that we, as a community, need to really rally to support this young man and his family, which is headed up by mom Lucienne Rivera.

She’s a former CHS grad herself, whose own sunny personality closely mirrors her son’s.

As the treatments are administered, she’ll be commuting back and forth extensively from Whidbey to Seattle.

Bennett’s teachers at the Ebey Academy are leading the charge to support the family, and have held several fundraisers.

They are currently seeking additional help, whether it be financial donations, gas cards, ferry passes, gift certificates for food or prayers for the family.

Get well cards and posters would also be greatly appreciated.

One of Coupevill’s youngest athletic stars needs a helping hand from his community.

Bennett Boyles, a member of the town’s 6th grade SWISH basketball team, is battling autoimmune encephalitis, and his teachers at the Ebey Academy are conducting fundraisers to help with his medical expenses.

The Academy is hosting two “Parents Night Out” events Apr. 30 and May 21, where people can drop their children and a donation off and have an evening to themselves, knowing their progeny will be well looked after.

They are also planning a book sale and a garage sale.

Donations are accepted 24/7, and you don’t have to have children, or drop them off, to help Boyles and his family.

Bennett, whose mom Lucienne and aunt Cara both attended Coupeville schools, has spent all 11 years of his life here, brightening the lives of those around him.

Autoimmune encephalitis, which was first diagnosed in 2005, is a disease in which the immune system attacks the brain.
