Wolf girls soccer plots its next move.

Three left, but at least one will fall.

Coupeville volleyball (7-0) hosts King’s (6-0) Monday in one of the titanic matches of the fall season, guaranteeing one of the last undefeated teams in the North Sound Conference will be no more.

The two spiker squads currently join South Whidbey girls soccer (9-0) as the only NSC programs with an unblemished record.

Monday’s showdown on Whidbey is part of a busy week for Coupeville, with all five Wolf teams in action.

After King’s, CHS volleyball welcomes Sultan to town Wednesday for Dig Pink Night, then travels to Port Townsend Thursday.

Wolf football is off to Tenino Friday to face Northwest Christian, while soccer hosts King’s Tuesday and ventures out Thursday to Port Townsend.

Coupeville cross country has meets Thursday at South Whidbey and Saturday at Lakewood, and boys tennis rounds out the action by possibly playing five days in a row.

The schedule has the netters at Overlake Monday, home Wednesday (Bear Creek) and Thursday (Friday Harbor), then back on the bus Friday for a trip to Bear Creek.

Tuesday is tentatively open, but may be used to finish up a home match with The Bush School which was stopped by rain.

As we prepare for the action-packed week ahead, a look at where we are so far.

Flaky dough. Delicate pears. The perfect touch of sweetness, without being cloying.

What? Yes, of course they played tennis Thursday afternoon in Coupeville, and yes, I’ll tell you about it.

But first, a big shout-out to University Prep coaches, who handed out complimentary, crafted-in-Seattle pastries after the match was done.

You sirs, are the real heroes, and the “working press” thanks you.

I may even have to reconsider the whole “bitchin’ and whining about private schools” stance I so love to traffic in.

Maybe. Possibly. We’ll see.

It may take me a while to warm up to schools like King’s and Archbishop Murphy, but U Prep, you had me at “free, delicious pastry.”

Oh, and the tennis match which preceded my sultry taste-bud tango with my unexpected delish dessert? It went about as expected.

U Prep, which is almost always in play for glory at the state tourney, won 5-0 to stay atop the battle for Emerald City League supremacy.

But public school Coupeville, which sits at 1-8 headed into a Friday home match with The Bush School, a team the Wolves beat earlier this season, put up some nice resistance.

Most of it came in two matches – #1 singles and #3 doubles.

U Prep’s top gun, Tyler Wurzer, finished third at the state tourney as a sophomore, and, if anything, his game has just gotten more impressive during his junior campaign.

The Puma pounder slapped winners from every direction, combining big power with uncanny touch, and yet Coupeville’s Drake Borden didn’t go down without delivering some impressive shots of his own.

One point in particular was a big fan-pleaser, as the duo exchanged knockout punches from the baseline.

With Wurzer drifting ever so slightly to his left, Borden lashed a long shot to the deepest, darkest corner in the right, and the ball clipped the last little bit of open space, biting the line, then spinning away into the fence for a winner.

It earned a quick acknowledgement from Wurzer, who smiled ever so slightly, and a big roar from Borden’s loyal rooting section, led by CHS coach Ken Stange, who jumped up and punched the air.

The closest match came at #3 doubles, where first-year players Miles Davidson and Logan Martin, who are still in the trial-run part of their tennis careers, fought back to take the second set and force a match-deciding tiebreaker.

While the young Wolves eventually fell to their more-experienced foes, they did so only after putting in their best performances of the season, with both coming up with sweet work at the net.

If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it again – the record is kind of deceptive.

The Coupeville High School boys tennis team, which went through the early part of the season without a full varsity roster, is a work in progress.

Which makes it tough when your netters play in the Emerald City League, a cutthroat, private school-dominated conference which has produced most of the 1A state champions in the last decade.

So, while the scrappy public school Wolves are competitive every time out, as they were Tuesday while losing 3-2 to Eastside Prep in Kirkland, they’ve taken a few dings on the ol’ win/loss record this time around.

Coupeville sits at 1-7 in league play, with home matches coming Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

The first of those opponents is one of the front-runners for the 2019 team state title, while the latter is win-less this season.

Both times CHS played Eastside Prep this season, they fell by the narrowest of margins.

Tuesday the Wolves got wins from Zach Ginnings, sliding up to play singles for the first time this season, and the doubles duo of James Wood and Mason Grove.

Ginnings was the last man on the court, and won his match by coming out on top in a cut-down tiebreaker as the teams raced impending darkness.

Complete Tuesday results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden lost to Amar Kumar 6-1, 6-1

2nd Singles — Zach Ginnings beat Zubin Ooman 6-3, 6-7(6-8), 7-4

1st Doubles — James Wood/Mason Grove beat Steven Pei/Max Goetzman 6-2, 6-4

2nd Doubles — Thane Peterson/Andrew Aparicio lost to Albert Chen/Kaiea Young 6-3, 7-5

3rd Doubles — Miles Davidson/Logan Martin lost 6-3, 6-4

The only thing dropping from the skies Monday was the occasional lob.

After scattered rain showers postponed their match last week, the Coupeville High School netters were able to make the short trek to South Whidbey, but fell just short of returning with a win.

Sweeping all three doubles matches, the Falcons escaped with a razor-thin 3-2 win, dropping the Wolves to 1-6 in Emerald City League play.

The all-Island rumble kicks off a busy week for Coupeville, which is scheduled to play four times in five days.

The Wolves travel to Kirkland Tuesday to face Eastside Prep, then are home Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

Complete Monday varsity results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden beat Max Rodriguez 6-3, 6-1

2nd Singles — Mason Grove beat Ian Maddux 6-0, 6-0

1st Doubles — James Wood/Zach Ginnings lost to Ranger Buck/Levi Buck 6-3, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Thane Peterson/Andrew Aparicio lost to Jordan Wu/Ben Roughsedge 6-1, 6-3

3rd Doubles — Miles Davidson/Logan Martin lost to Emmett Layman/Austin Buck 6-4, 6-2

After a win over La Conner Friday, Tim Ursu and Wolf football sit at 2-2 heading into a long road trip to Eastern Washington.

We’re in the thick of it now.

With fall sports chugging right along, every Coupeville High School team has a busy schedule in the week ahead, with one exception.

Cross country, coming off its best showing of the season, has a week-and-a-half gap in its schedule, with the Wolves not set to run competitively again until Oct. 10.

Everyone else at CHS, however, will be in action, with 10 events — four at home, six on the road — scheduled for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 5.

Wolf football has the fewest games, but the longest road trip, as it travels to Eastern Washington Saturday, Oct. 5 to play Kittitas.

CHS girls soccer hosts South Whidbey Tuesday, then hits the road Thursday to travel to Granite Falls, while volleyball and boys tennis are really busy.

The spikers host South Whidbey Tuesday, go to Granite Thursday, then cap things with a trip Saturday to Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, the Wolf net crew travels Monday to South Whidbey and Tuesday to Eastside Prep, then returns home to play Thursday and Friday.

The first of those local matches is against University Prep, the second against The Bush School.

Of course, all of that tennis action depends on the weather, as rain has already bumped three matches this season.

As we prepare for the action-packed week ahead, a look at where we are so far.
