Not bad. Not bad at all.

Facing off Saturday with two-time defending 1B/2B state soccer champs Crosspoint Academy, the public school kids more than held their own.

Riding goals from May Rose, Bree Daigneault and Jenn Spark, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad came within a whisker of an upset, before being nipped 4-3.

“The match was epic and the girls are learning to ratchet up their level of intensity to match and surpass their opponent,” said CHS coach Troy Cowan. “Each match we get faster, stronger and better prepared for our impending conference matches.”

The non-conference loss dropped the Wolves to 2-3-3 on the season, while Crosspoint won its fourth straight.

Coupeville will now have 10 days to tweak all the small things, as it’s off until a non-conference game at La Conner Oct. 13.

Two days after that, the Wolves kick off the first of six straight 1A Olympic League matches, which will decide the squad’s postseason fate.

Saturday, facing a school it lost to 7-1 last year, Coupeville clamped down on both sides of the ball.

Crosspoint had outscored its last three opponents 27-1, with nine goals in each of those games, but the Wolf defense held them to less than half of that per-game average.

While Spark is the rock for the Wolf defense, her fellow defenders all stepped up big.

One young gun drew big-time praise from her coach, for her play on the afternoon and all season.

“How impressed I have been with one of my players of late. She is the hardest-working player on the pitch, never complains, gives me and her teammates 100% every second on the pitch and does it with a smile on her face,” Cowan said. “She has grown leaps and bounds from her freshman year to yesterday. She is gritty, tough-minded and passionate!

Taichen Rose has left an indelible mark on me and demonstrated the true spirit of sportsmanship and the results of possessing a positive perspective.”

And, when the Wolves had their chances on offense, they took full advantage, and not always from the expected gunners.

Kalia Littlejohn, who entered with seven goals in seven games, was held scoreless, but set up Daigneault for her second goal of the season.

Spark crushed home her third score of the season, with a little help from an opposing player.

The senior with the golden leg let loose with a corner kick that curled at the last second, then exploded off of a Crosspoint defender’s noggin and into the corner of the net.

Wrapping up Coupeville’s scoring burst was May Rose, as the junior hit pay-dirt after being set up by Mia Littlejohn.

One of the most unsung Wolves, the always-hard working older sister in the Rose & Rose Wrecking Crew was sky-high afterwards.

Especially with one of her best friends, Daigneault, also scoring, while the third of the Three Amigos, CHS spiker Ally Roberts, screamed her approval from the sidelines.

“I know what it feels like to cry when you’re over emotionally happy now,” Rose posted on Twitter in the afterglow of her big moment.

To her, and all of her Wolf teammates, who never broke, and barely yielded, in the face of a true powerhouse, job well done, ladies.

Why does Sage Renninger (17) score so many goals? So she can get hugs from Lauren Bayne, of course.

Bree Daigneault

Jenn Spark

The goals are coming almost as fast as the photos.

Led by the super-charged scoring foot of freshman Kalia Littlejohn, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad has hammered home 19 goals in its first six games.

The Wolves have spread out the scoring, as well, with eight different players already in the books.

The scoring race, with nine regular season games still left on the schedule:

Kalia Littlejohn — 6
Mia Littlejohn — 4
Arisbeth Montiel — 2
Sage Renninger — 2
Jenn Spark — 2
Bree Daigneault — 1
Lindsey Roberts — 1
Ashley Smith –1

Along with the frequent goals, the Wolves have also been knocking a ton of photos out of the park, and the pics above are courtesy travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

girls

Like I said, not their first photo shoot…

Eventually, they played some soccer. And were pretty dang good at it.

But first things first for the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad on Day #1 of practice for a new season.

Running? Well, yeah, eventually…

But take one team blessed with athletes who enjoy posing for the camera, and one rovin’ photo man in John Fisken, and the first day of practice was all about the photo ops.

Then CHS coach Troy Cowan got control of his team again and they went back to work, content in the knowledge that they had, once again, won the internet.

It’s many things wrapped in one.

It’s a “home” game that’s taking place 45 miles down the road.

It’s a winner-take-all playoff game.

It’s probably the biggest game in program history.

When the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad (6-6-1) takes the pitch this afternoon (12 PM) at Kingston High School, it will be a rare venture into true postseason play for the Wolf booters.

The opponent is Vashon Island (6-4-1), the #3 team from the Nisqually Valley League and Coupeville is nominally the home team, having earned that honor by claiming second place in the Olympic League behind Klahowya.

But, with the requirement that all District 3 playoff games take place on turf fields, CHS was not allowed to host the game on its field.

Oak Harbor’s beautiful turf field, less than 10 miles up the road, was already spoken for (a cheer camp), so it’s off to North Kitsap.

The #3 team from the Olympic, Port Townsend (3-11) faces the #2 team from the Nisqually, Bellevue Christian (7-4-2) as well Saturday.

The Coupeville/Vashon winner advances to play Seattle Christian (12-2-1) Nov. 4, while the Port Townsend/Bellevue Christian winner gets Klahowya (14-1).

Two teams will emerge from the six-team district tourney and qualify for state.

Busy.

That perfectly describes Coupeville High School sophomore Bree Daigneault, who has already lettered in three sports (soccer, cheer and tennis), while finding time to balance school work and a personal life.

She and her Wolf teammates take their 1-0 record on the road to Sequim today for a non-conference girls’ soccer game, giving Daigneault a chance to continue to live her love affair with the sport.

“I enjoy soccer for too many reasons to count,” she said. “I have played for about six or seven years and I started in rec just because it looked like fun!”

On the pitch Daigneault bounces around, generally playing outside mid, but sometimes slipping up to forward.

Wherever she lines up, she always has an eye on honing her skills and helping out her teammates.

“I need to work on taking the ball out of the air, but I think my strengths are in my teamwork and ability to move the ball around the field,” she said.

“This soccer season we have a lot of seniors, so I think it would be great if we could make it to districts for them!,” Daigneault added. “I have played with the seniors for a few years now and they most definitely have helped me get better; I want to continue to learn from them.”

A big fan of the Seahawks and Sounders, she gravitates towards classic rock and upholds both parts of the student/athlete equation.

“I really enjoy school,” Daigneault said. “Math and English are probably my favorite subjects.”

Whether she’s on the pitch, in the classroom or out and about, she draws inspiration from a number of directions.

She looks up to professional female soccer players like Mia Hamm and Hope Solo, but finds her biggest fans close by.

“My parents have always encouraged me to do what I love, and I love soccer.”
