Two medals in hand, and a third one on order.

Day #1 of the three-day 2B state track and field championships went to plan for Coupeville High School, with all three athletes in competition doing well.

Wolf senior Carolyn Lhamon led the way in Yakima, shattering her PR in the shot put by more than a foot as she claimed 4th place in a field of 16 girls.

Her throw of 36 feet, two inches tops her previous best mark of 35-00, set at the district meet.

It also left Lhamon just seven inches shy of the CHS girls record of 36-09, set way back in 1990 by Jennie Cross.

Lhamon, who finished 16th at state as a junior, becomes the 78th Wolf to bring home a state meet medal, and the 32nd girl.

Joining her in claiming hardware Thursday was fellow senior Aidan Wilson, who claimed 5th in the triple jump, narrowly missing a PR with a mark of 41-06.75.

It’s the third state meet medal for him, after he brought home a 2nd (4 x 100) and 3rd (800) last season.

Wilson is the 27th Wolf to hit the trifecta, and, with two events still left to compete in this time around, he has a chance to join an even-more exclusive club.

There are 11 CHS athletes currently in the five-medal fraternity.

While Coupeville brought 22 athletes to Yakima, Thursday’s schedule was relatively light, with Monroe Myles running in the 100-meter prelims.

The speedy sophomore, making her first appearance at the state meet for the Wolves, finished 5th out of 16 runners, hitting the line with a PR of 13.13 seconds.

That sends Myles into Saturday’s eight-woman final and guarantees her a medal.

With Lhamon and Wilson scoring Thursday, Coupeville is in the mix in the team scoring race as well.

The CHS girls, with five points, are tied with Brewster for 4th place.

With two of 18 events scored, St. George’s (28), Asotin (16), and White Swan (8) currently hold down the top three slots.

On the boys side, they’ve wrapped three of 17 events, with St. George’s (16), Chewelah (12), and Goldendale (12) in the early lead.

Coupeville, with Wilson’s four points, is 14th heading into Friday.

“They did amazing!!!,” said Coupeville girls’ coach Elizabeth Bitting. “A fun day in YAKIMA!!!”

“Yep, good stuff,” added boys’ coach Bob Martin.

And the Wolves get right back at it after a sleep, with their athletes primed to compete in seven prelims and five finals during day #2 at Zaepfel Stadium.

One meet left, with one giant stage on which to shine.

Coupeville High School track and field athletes head to Yakima this week for the 2B state championships, which go down May 25-27.

Counting alternates for two relay squads, 22 Wolves will be on the bus as the wheels go round and round during the cross-state trek.

A number of those CHS track stars feature in our final look at the top 10 performances in 2B this season, while some do not.

While Coupeville had this past weekend off, other schools across the state wrapped up their own district, bi-district, and tri-district meets, and now the numbers are set in stone.

But again, as you scan the numbers below, a reminder that you can be in the top 10 and NOT go to state, while you can also be state-bound and NOT be on this list.

Track and field, forever tricky and full of intrigue.

Win, or go home.

And yes, the Coupeville High School track and field team was already home Saturday, hosting the District 1/2 championships at Mickey Clark Field.

But every race, every field event, was a nailbiter, as the only way athletes earned their ticket to state was by winning.

Finish second Saturday and you got a firm handshake, but that was it.

Which was fine by the Wolves, who went out and won 18 events en route to capturing both girls and boys team titles.

“We are the champions … of the world.” (Bob Martin photo)

Coupeville’s girls had themselves a truly epic day, rolling up more points than the second and third best teams combined.

The Wolves finished with 225 points, with Friday Harbor (109), La Conner (83), and Northwest Christian of Lacey (72) bringing up the rear.

The battle was closer on the boy’s side, with Coupeville (194) pulling away from La Conner (146) and Friday Harbor (131) late.

NWC was well back with just 39 points.

Once they add alternates for the girls 4 x 400 relay and the boys 4 x 100 unit, the Wolves are expecting to pack 22 athletes onto the bus for the trip to Yakima.

After a long run in Cheney, the 2B state meet jumps to Zaepfel Stadium this season, with the royal rumble slated for May 25-27.

Lyla Stuurmans, Aidan Wilson, Monroe Myles, and Carolyn Lhamon all qualified for two individual events, with the first three of those Wolves also part of a state meet-qualifying relay team.

Wilson, Ryanne Knoblich, Reiley Araceley, and Dominic Coffman are the only active CHS track stars to have earned state meet medals in prior years.

Knoblich was 2nd in the high jump last season, while Wilson was 3rd in the 800.

Wilson also teamed up with Coffman, Araceley, and the now graduated Caleb Meyer to finish 2nd in the 4 x 100.

Hear the Wolves howl.

Coupeville High School track and field lit up Jack Whitaker Field in La Conner Wednesday, throwing down a dominant performance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Boasting a deep roster, the Wolf boys cruised to a team title, doubling up their closest rival, while the CHS girls narrowly finished second to powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian.

Coupeville’s male athletes captured nine wins en route to rolling up 155 points.

La Conner (77), MVC (62), Friday Harbor (37), and Orcas Island (23) rounded out the team scoring.

Among the girls, the battle was much closer, with MVC holding off CHS 154.5-129.5.

Friday Harbor (36), La Conner (31), and Orcas (20) were way, way back of the titanic twosome.

Coupeville’s girls brought home eight titles of their own, with the Wolves claiming the top spot on the podium in 17 of the day’s 35 events.

Wolf senior Aidan Wilson led the way, earning top honors in the 400, 800, and triple jump, while sophomore Lyla Stuurmans (400, 800) and senior Mitchell Hall (1600, 3200) were double winners.

CHS female stars notching wins included Monroe Myles (100), Claire Mayne (100 Hurdles), Carolyn Lhamon (Shot Put), Katie Marti (Javelin), and Ryanne Knoblich (High Jump).

Zac Tackett (Discus), Nick Guay (High Jump), and Nehemiah Myles (Long Jump) are also league champs, as are the girls 4 x 400 relay squad and the boys 4 x 100 unit.

“They all ran, jumped, threw beautifully!” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “It was a good day!!!!!!!”

Next up for the Wolves is the district meet Saturday, May 13, which they will host.

That event, which is the direct lead-in to the state meet, kicks off at 11:00 AM at Coupeville’s Mickey Clark Field.

CHS seniors (l to r) Dominic Coffman, Alex Murdy, and Tim Ursu all are dreaming of postseason success. (Sandi Murdy photo)

Welcome to the BIG time.

The 33rd annual GearUp Eason Invitational drew track and field athletes to Snohomish Saturday from 91 different schools, encompassing two states and two countries.

Washington state teams were joined by squads from Oregon — including a 6A school — and British Columbia, with Coupeville High School the only “B” school in attendance.

And while the Wolves didn’t pull off any wins, they did get a Top 10 performance in the shot put from senior Carolyn Lhamon, who was 9th in a field of 40 throwers.

While the competition was extreme, CHS coaches and athletes came away pleased with their effort.

“A little rain, less sun, lots of clouds and some beautiful PR’s!!!!,” said Wolf track guru Elizabeth Bitting. “Long day and a successful one!

“They all did amazing! Especially those 4 x 400 relay teams,” she added. “Three of the four girls and two of the boys attended JUST for that race AND they were the very last events.

“Such a long day for them! Super proud that both teams PR’d!”

Even qualifying for the meet was super-intensive, with only the best of the best making the cut.

Having Aidan Wilson get the invite in four events, while fellow senior Tate Wyman made it in three warms Bitting’s heart.

“That’s impressive,” she said. “We might be small, but we are mighty!”
