Fab five embrace end zone love

Everyone’s chasing Davin.

Three games into the season, junior Davin Houston tops the scoring stats for the Coupeville High School football team, keeping alive a tradition started by older brothers Dawson and Daylon.

The third of Daniel and Alia’s three sons has recorded at least one touchdown every week heading into Friday’s Homecoming tilt with Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, and he’s looking to spend more quality time in the end zone.

Where things currently sit for the only gridiron stats I have:

Anderson sizzles, but Tigers triumphant

They found some cracks in the defense. Just not enough of them.

Playing on the road Saturday, the Coupeville High School football team became the first squad to score against Granite Falls this season, but couldn’t quite derail the unbeaten Tigers.

With senior quarterback Chase Anderson connecting on four touchdown passes, the Wolves made their hosts work for the 58-27 non-conference win.

With the victory, Granite, which shut out East Jefferson 47-0 and Sultan 42-0 to open the season, gets to 3-0.

Meanwhile, Coupeville, a 2B school which has played three straight 1A foes, will carry an 0-3 mark into next week’s Homecoming clash with Cedar Park Christian-Bothell.

But, while the Wolves are still looking for that first win, they demonstrated they can light up the scoreboard.

Anderson is just the fifth gunslinger in CHS history to toss at least four touchdowns in a game, joining Corey Cross (4), Brad Sherman (4), Hunter Downes (4), and Logan Downes (5).

Playing against a previously-unbreakable Granite defense, he spread the love out, dropping scoring passes into the hands of Davin Houston, Josh Stockdale, and Nathan Coxsey.

Score #1 came on a 15-yard pass to Houston late in the first quarter, tying the game up at 7-7.

Granite promptly pushed its lead back out to 14-7 off a long scoring run to open the second quarter, only to see Anderson respond with a 23-yard scoring strike to Stockdale.

Unfortunately for Coupeville, that would be the last time the game was knotted up, though the Wolves hung tough, with the game not being broken open until late.

The Tigers seized momentum late in the second frame, scoring 16 unanswered points in a little over two minutes.

A long pass play for a touchdown was followed by a blocked punt taken in for another six points, then Granite forced a safety, and suddenly it was 30-14 in favor of the hosts.

The Wolves trimmed things back to 30-20 right before the half, with Anderson and Houston teaming up for a 28-yard touchdown pass, but CHS failed to convert on a two-point PAT try.

The teams exchanged touchdowns to open the third, with Anderson lofting a 25-yard pass to Coxsey to get Coupeville back within 37-27.

That would be the final gasp for the Wolves, however, as Granite went to the ground, grinding out three touchdowns late to make the final score look more lopsided than it really was.

With his two touchdown receptions Saturday, Houston has a team-high four trips to the end zone this season, and the junior Wolf has scored in all three games.

Stockdale, a junior, and Coxsey, a sophomore, recorded their first high school touchdowns.

Granite was led by senior Joseph Roberts, who scored touchdowns three ways Saturday — on a catch, a run, and by recovering the blocked punt.

Gridiron gang nipped in home opener

It slipped away.

The Coupeville High School football team carried a lead into the halftime locker room Friday night, but couldn’t quite seal the deal in its home opener.

Up 13-8 on visiting Cascade (Leavenworth), the Wolves, who lost starting quarterback Chase Anderson to a first-half injury, eventually fell 30-19 in the non-conference clash at Mickey Clark Field.

The loss drops Coupeville to 0-2 on the season, with a road trip to Granite Falls up next on the schedule.

The 2B Wolves play 1A schools in five of their first six games this season.

After being limited to a single touchdown by week #1 foe Annie Wright, Coupeville hit pay dirt three times on its home turf.

Anderson broke off a massive 70+ yard touchdown run, scampering away from a group of Cascade tacklers, with Liam Blas and Davin Houston also crashing into the end zone for six points apiece.

It was Houston’s second score of the campaign.

With Anderson sidelined, backup quarterback Nathan Coxsey saw his first extended tour of duty under center and the sophomore held up well in the spotlight.

CHS boys trek East for summer hoops

Take your basketball and go East, young man.

Summer is prime time for looking ahead, and seeing what next season’s roster might look like.

So that’s what Coupeville High School coaches did this week, as they scooped up a collection of players and headed off to the other side of the state for the Connell Shootout.

While spending three days in Eastern Washington, Wolf boys’ hoops stars played eight games in a 48-hour span.

Foes included Willapa Valley, Columbia Burbank, Warden, East Valley, Oroville, Othello, Warden, and the host school.

As he headed back to Whidbey, still abuzz after the experience, CHS coach Brad Sherman was philosophical.

“Some wins, some losses, a lot of growth as a team,” he said “Exactly what you want out of summer hoops.”

The Wolves share dinner with players from league rival Mount Vernon Christian.

Calkins, Anderson nab WIAA award

They are the present, and future, of Wolf sports.

Coupeville High School juniors Teagan Calkins and Chase Anderson have both been three-sport standouts and are on the cusp of senior years that could be legendary.

But first, the duo closed out their third year at CHS by being honored Monday with the Cliff Gillies Award.

That honor, handed out by schools across the state, is named for a former longtime Executive Director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

It recognizes student/athletes who “excel in scholarship, citizenship, and participation in activities.”

Calkins played key roles for volleyball, basketball, and softball teams this season, with the first and third of those squads advancing to state.

“The Red Dragon” piled up 194 kills, 64 digs, 15 block assists, and 33 service aces for a spiker unit which went 18-2, was undefeated until the final day of the season, and brought home a 4th place trophy — best in program history.

On the hardwood, Calkins led the Wolves in scoring with 183 points, developing a deadly three-point shot to rain pain down on her foes.

Capping things off in the spring, she anchored the team from her catcher position, gunning down runners with a flick of her wrist and helping a young pitching staff stay calm and composed.

At the plate, Calkins was a beast, as usual, spraying line drives to every field as she and her teammates roared through a 20-3 season which concluded with a four-game run at the state tourney.

Anderson opened the fall on the gridiron and was named the Offensive MVP for the Northwest 2B/1B League.

Playing quarterback and kicking (plus patrolling the secondary on defense), he led the Wolves with 99 points.

Turn to basketball, and the points kept on coming, as he poured in a team-high 339 points, mixing in long-range bombs with lightning-quick slashes to the hoop.

Those fleet feet paid off in the spring as well for Anderson, who transitioned from baseball to track and field and made an immediate impact.

He won 15 times in his first season on the high school oval, spreading out the victories across the 100, 4 x 100 relay, 4 x 400 relay, and javelin.

Advancing to state in his first go-round, Anderson ran a leg on both Wolf relay units in Yakima, helping pick up 6th place medals in the 4 x 1 and 5th place honors in the 4 x 4.
