They fought until the final ace.

Facing strong private school competition Thursday, Coupeville High School’s tennis players acquitted themselves nicely at the West Central District III tourney at the Sprinker Tennis Center in Tacoma.

The Wolves, who matched Vashon Island with a tourney-best six competitors, claimed second place in the team standings.

Tourney host Charles Wright Academy, which won both singles and doubles titles, edged Coupeville 23-12 for the team title.

Vashon (7), Klahowya (3), Cascade Christian (3) and Chimacum (0) rounded out the field.

Wolf juniors Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger came within a match of punching their ticket to state, falling in the championship match.

The first loss of the season for the duo, it shouldn’t overshadow their season.

Renninger went 14-1 this year, Aparicio 13-1, and their second-place finish at districts was a serious jump from fifth as sophomores.

With District 3 getting only one slot to state in both singles and doubles, they are the alternates to state if something should befall the champs between now and next weekend.

Senior Valen Trujillo capped her stellar four-year run with the Wolves with a second-straight third-place finish in singles, winning the final three matches of her career.

The trio was joined at districts by foreign exchange student Fanny Deprelle and freshman phenoms Zoe Trujillo and Avalon Renninger.

Clay Reilly is one of three Coupeville seniors tabbed to play in the All-State baseball feeder games. (John Fisken photos)

He’ll be joined by Taylor Consford.

Kory Score makes three, bringing a smile to coach Chris Smith’s face.

Don’t turn in those uniforms just yet.

Three Coupeville High School seniors will get at least one more day on the baseball diamond after being selected to play June 1 in the Northwest District A/B feeder games.

Clay Reilly, Taylor Consford and Kory Score have been tabbed to visit Bellingham and play at Joe Martin Field.

Feeder games are held in numerous locations across the state from May 30-June 5, featuring Washington’s best senior ballplayers.

The best performers at each place are nominated for the All-State Baseball Series, and those who make the final cut travel to Yakima June 10-11.

In recent years, CHS pitchers Ben Etzell and Aaron Curtin got the All-State call, with Etzell making the trip and pitching in 2014.

Reilly, an outfielder who sometimes moonlighted at catcher, was a four-year player for the Wolves.

A feared hitter with a powerful arm, he helped lead CHS to its first baseball league title in 25 years during his junior season.

Score was also a starter on that squad, manning first base the last two seasons after moving back to town, while Consford, Coupeville’s starting catcher, transferred from Oak Harbor before his senior season.

Our first-ever Coupeville Sports Coach Supreme winner, Ryan King, passes on some of the wisdom he picked up playing in the trenches. (John Fisken photo)

Well, it’s a nice (imaginary) parting gift.

Ryan King, who recently stepped down after stints as a football and basketball coach at CHS and CMS, is the first-ever recipient of the title of Coupeville Sports Coach Supreme.

He held off Wolf JV volleyball coach Kristin Bridges and jack-of-all-trades Bob Martin to win our 48-hour poll, pulling in 4,883 votes.

Bridges (3,797), Martin (1,429) and CHS softball gurus Kevin (1,090) and Justine McGranahan (919) round out the top five.

The contest pitted 35 coaches against each other in an internet battle royale created mainly to give me tons of extra page hits (it worked) and is a companion to our annual Coupeville Sports Athlete Supreme.

That contest has run for five years now, with Nick Streubel, Amanda Fabrizi, CJ Smith, Hunter Smith and Joey Lippo taking home top honors from 2013-2017.

Like those five, King wins nothing concrete, as I’m too cheap to have an actual trophy.

But he does get a brief moment of fame, maybe a few glares from those he vanquished, and a warm feeling in his chest from knowing the internet is on his side … today.

So, he’s good.

In it to win it. Robin Cedillo (back) and Jae LeVine, who went to state as freshmen, are trying to get back as seniors. (John Fisken photos)

17-3 and ready to keep on singing through the postseason.

Six teams enter, two teams keep their dream alive.

The West Central District 3 softball tournament is May 19-20 in Tacoma, and the headline story (at least for readers of this blog) is Coupeville’s run at the state tourney.

As the #2 seed from the Olympic League, the Wolves, who sit at 17-3, have two goals.

First, they have to beat the Nisqually League’s #3 team, Vashon Island, in their opener Friday to keep playing.

Since CHS already thumped the Pirates 13-5 early in the season, that’s likely.

Get past that first hurdle and Coupeville advances to the double-elimination portion of the tourney, with a second game Friday night (against NL #1 Bellevue Christian) and one or two games Saturday.

Collect three wins total at districts and Coupeville returns to state for the first time since 2014.

Coupeville High School grad Hailey Hammer, with mom Linda, closed out a stellar two-year college softball run. (Photo courtesy Hailey Hammer)

Hailey Hammer is one of the most successful softball players to ever spring from Central Whidbey, and she closed her career in style Sunday afternoon.

The Coupeville High School grad, a 12-time letter winner (volleyball, basketball, softball) during her days as a Wolf, smacked two hits and knocked in a run in her final collegiate softball game.

While Everett Community College fell 18-10 to Pierce CC (wrapping up a 13-28 season), Hammer continued to fill up the stat sheet.

She finished her sophomore campaign at EVCC hitting .330 with four home runs and 22 RBIs, while also racking up 218 put-outs while patrolling first base.

During her two years as a Trojan, Hammer played in 64 games, hitting .309.

Even while fighting through injuries, she racked up 28 runs, 54 base-knocks (including 10 extra-base hits), 29 RBI, 22 walks and one memorable stolen base.

Afterwards, she briefly reflected on her run in the sport, which carried her from little league all the way to college success.

“It’s all done now,” Hammer said. “Thank you to all of the coaches I’ve had over these years, all of my teammates on every team, and most importantly, my family.”
