It made for great team building.

Coupeville High School cross country runners and coaches teamed up this weekend to participate in Ragnar, covering ground from the wilds of Blaine down to the Southern tip of Whidbey Island.

“Other teams go to camp, we ran RAGNAR,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“They all ran amazing, their splits were phenomenal, their energy was off the charts, they pushed back their tiredness, the memories they made were priceless.”

The Wolves were financed by a variety of folks, including the Coupeville Booster Club.

“I wanted them to pay for nothing and just enjoy the experience,” Bitting said.

With Ragnar being a unique competition, it gave the Wolves a new perspective on what they can accomplish both as individuals and as a team.

“This relay changes how you look at races,” Bitting said. “You run your leg then immediately jump back out to cheer on your teammates … no matter what time of day or night that might be.

“You run, eat, sleep, repeat! It was truly a great experience. I hope I’ve made sone Ragnarians for life!!”

CHS cross country, which finished third among high school teams, had two vans operating under a “Running with the Pack” banner.

The roster included:

Van #1:

Elizabeth Bitting (Coach)
Aleksia Jump
Allie Powers
Kelly Powers (Driver)
Ivy Rudat
Mikayla Wagner
Devon Wyman

Van #2:

Join the movement.

New Coupeville High School girls’ soccer coach Jasmine Ader is hosting a “Pizza on the Pitch” night next Wednesday, July 16.

It’s part of a push to fire up young booters and revive the program.

After a 20-year run, the Wolf girls have been unable to field enough players to compete as a team the past two seasons.

Those players who have persevered joined the CHS boys as a co-ed team competing in a boys’ league.

But the preference for all involved would be to see the Wolf girls once again go toe-to-toe, and goal-for-goal, as their own team.

So, if you attend Coupeville schools and will be in grades 8-12 this fall, get to Mickey Clark Field next week.

Put together a softball tournament with 2,000-plus players, and there’s a great chance some of those sluggers will hail from Cow Town.

The 30th annual Canada Cup runs July 4-13 in Surrey, British Columbia — AKA “Softball City” — and a number of Coupeville athletes are participating this season.

Recent CHS grads Taylor Brotemarkle and Madison McMillan, joined by Oak Harbor compatriots Layla Suto, Mia Regan, and Ramona Ryder, play for the Whidbey Island Thunder 18U team, which went 3-2 in their appearance.

That squad has a couple more tourneys on their schedule as its travel ball season runs through the end of July.

Also playing in Canada was the Island Vipers, which has a sizable chunk of Wolf varsity players on its roster.

Plus, All-World catcher Teagan Calkins is prepping for her senior year at CHS while anchoring Elevate NW Elite.

The Canada Cup draws teams from multiple states, with the USA and Canada being joined by squads from as far away as Israel, New Zealand, The Netherlands, and Taiwan.

The summer hoops grind continues.

Coupeville High School boys’ basketball players traveled North earlier this week to take part in the Blaine Border Bash.

While there the Wolves squared off with teams from Stanwood, Burlington-Edison, Blaine, and Squalicum.

“Played really tough against some good squads!” said CHS coach Brad Sherman.

Charlie Cook

You can’t talk about Coupeville athletics without paying tribute to the accomplishments of the Cooks.

Wolf Nation lost one of its best in May, with the passing of Charlie Cook, who excelled for the Wolves in whatever sport he played.

From the family:

Charles “Charlie” Cook, died peacefully on May 21st, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Charlie was born in Japan in 1957 to Ayako and Roger Cook.

He later moved to Coupeville, where he graduated from Coupeville High School, Class of 1976.

A proud Coupeville Wolf, Charlie was a standout three-sport athlete.

He became a business owner and custom home builder on Whidbey Island after graduation.

In 2008, he moved to Seattle and became a Quality Control Inspector, where he was known as the best inspector the company had ever employed.

Throughout his life, Charlie was known for his generosity and for being one of a kind.

He had a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys.

Whether that was going out fishing on an early morning, playing a round of golf, or sharing a table for a game of poker or cribbage.

He kept his competitive edge sharp in cribbage and poker – still playing up until his final days.

Charlie is survived by his brothers, Richard Cook (Linda) and Raymond Cook (Roni), and his beloved daughter, Lauren Cook.

He will also be deeply missed by extended family, lifelong friends, and the many lives he touched on Whidbey Island.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that his one-of-a-kind spirit will live on.

A celebration of life is to follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlie’s memory to the Coupeville High School FutureGenerations Fund through the Whidbey Community Foundation website, supporting opportunities for future Coupeville students.
