Reach for the heavens, and prepare for impact.

Coupeville High School has filled an open date on its football schedule, adding a home game against 1A power Meridian Saturday, Oct. 9.

The game will kickoff at 7 PM, and be part of a two-sport doubleheader at Mickey Clark Field.

That’s because the Wolf boys soccer squad also hosts Providence Classical Christian at 3 PM that day.

Meridian’s football team was slated to play league rival Lynden Christian Oct. 8, but the Lyncs cancelled the game because of Covid issues.

The Bellingham Herald reported Wednesday that Lynden Christian, which houses preschool though 12th grade on its campus, is moving all grades to remote learning after a recent surge in cases.

The addition of the game gets Coupeville back to an eight-game regular season schedule after its contest with East Jefferson earlier this season was KO’d by a wind storm which shut down the ferry system.

The Wolves, 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-2 overall, play at Friday Harbor Oct. 1, then get a week to prepare for Meridian, which is currently 3-1 heading into a clash with Nooksack Valley.

The Trojans opened the season with a 54-8 loss to Burlington-Edison, but have rebounded to beat Evergreen 55-6, Grandview 34-15, and Bellingham 26-14.

Meridian boasts a proud football tradition, having played in six state championship games, winning titles in 1999, 2003, and 2006 under legendary former coach Bob Ames.

She hasn’t lost as a pro.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone and the Leicester Riders thunked the Cardiff Met Archers 77-46 Wednesday in Women’s British Basketball League action, claiming their third-straight win to open the season.

With the victory, the Riders take top honors in their group at the WBBL Cup and advance to the semifinals, where they’ll square off with the Newcastle Eagles.

The London Lions and Sheffield Hatters play in the other half of the draw, with both games to be played at a still-to-be-determined date.

Leicester is the defending WBBL Cup champs, though this is Stone’s first go-around in the event.

The former Wolf came off the bench Wednesday to pile up five points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 20.5 minutes of action.

Stone played the most of any Riders bench player.

Using a stifling defense, Leicester jumped all over Cardiff Met, turning a string of turnovers into quick buckets as it jumped out to a 25-8 lead by the first break.

The Riders took a slight step back in the second frame, but still led 39-24 at the half, before shoving things back out to 54-32 heading into the fourth.

Leicester put five players into double-digit scoring in the rout, with Louise Rouse and Brooklynn Mcalear-Fanus pacing the Riders with 14 points apiece.

Through three pro games, Stone has racked up 17 points, 21 rebounds, five assists, and a steal.

With a break in WBBL Cup action, Leicester opens the regular season Oct. 2, when it plays the Nottingham Wildcats.

This was one they wanted, and needed.

With just four of seven Northwest 2B/1B League schools playing girls soccer, every conference tilt is a big one for Coupeville.

So, Tuesday night’s 4-1 loss at Friday Harbor hurts, at least in the moment.

It drops Coupeville to 1-2 in league play, 2-3 overall, and slots them in third-place in the NWL, with six more conference rumbles to play.

Mount Vernon Christian (3-0, 6-1-1) is the dominant team, and La Conner (0-3, 0-3) — who the Wolves play Thursday — are the cellar dwellers.

That leaves CHS and Friday Harbor (2-1, 2-5) to vie for the #2 position.

Coupeville plays three games against each league foe, which means it still has plenty of time to make up ground as the season winds through October.

Overall, the Wolves have nine games still on the schedule, with non-conference bouts against 4A Mount Vernon’s C-Team, as well as Sultan and East Jefferson’s varsity squads, still ahead.

But it’s the remaining six league games, home-and-away affairs with MVC, Friday Harbor, and La Conner, which will matter the most.

Tuesday, Coupeville got its goal from senior Eryn Wood, who smacked home her second tally of the season, and fifth of her prep career.

Right back in stride.

Less than 24 hours after stumbling against South Whidbey in a non-conference tilt, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team returned to its winning ways.

Getting big contributions from multiple players, the Wolves bounced host Friday Harbor 25-16, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18 to get to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville, which is 5-2 overall, sits alone atop the NWL standings, though that should change quickly.

Two-time defending state champ La Conner returned from a Covid-related shutdown Monday, and has raised its record to 3-0 in league, 4-0 overall.

The Braves are scheduled to play three more matches before hosting Coupeville Oct. 6.

The Wolves have six days off now, then welcome Concrete, a team it has already beat, to Whidbey Oct. 5.

Barring any colossal upsets, that means La Conner and Coupeville should both be 6-0 in NWL play heading into the first of their two match-ups this season.

But all of that was on the back burner Tuesday, as Coupeville was focused on finding a quick fix for its struggles against South Whidbey.

Mission accomplished.

“Good to get back on the court and bring home a win,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “We made some adjustments that seemed to do well for us.”

Getting her most substantial playing time of the season, hard-working junior Ryanne Knoblich shone brightly, collecting her first seven kills of the campaign, along with a season-high 13 digs.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to step up, as Lucy Tenore notched her first solo block of the season, Lyla Stuurmans unleashed her first ace, and Madison McMillan made her varsity debut.

The fourth freshman to play this year for Coupeville’s top team, she joins fellow 9th graders Stuurmans, Savina Wells, and Katie Marti in making an immediate impact.

Freshman Madison McMillan made her varsity debut, collecting her first kill.

Ryanne stepped up and did really well for us playing six rotations,” Whitmore said.

Madison, earning a varsity jersey, also collected her first varsity kill,” he added. “We are very proud of her progress, and readiness to be thrown in.”

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 15 digs, 2 aces
Maddie Georges — 2 kills, 4 digs, 23 assists, 6 aces
Taygin Jump — 9 digs
Ryanne Knoblich — 7 kills, 13 digs, 1 ace
Madison McMillan
— 1 kill
Grey Peabody — 2 kills
Jill Prince — 9 kills
Olivia Schaffeld
— 4 kills, 1 dig
Lyla Stuurmans
— 6 kills, 3 digs, 1 ace
Lucy Tenore
— 8 kills, 2 aces, 1 solo block
Savina Wells
— 3 digs, 4 aces

The Wolves have plenty to celebrate as they sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings.

You can cut their floor time, but you can’t stop them crushing you.

With the last ferry off of Friday Harbor sounding its whistle Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team didn’t get to play a full match.

But that didn’t matter, as the Wolves crushed their hosts quickly and efficiently during the time they had, strolling to a 25-8, 20-7 win.

The victory, the JV’s second in less than 24 hours, lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-1 overall.

Coupeville took command at the service line and never let up, peppering the host Wolverines from every angle.

“It was good!,” said CHS coach Ashley Menges. “It was a night full of serving for the girls; stats will show that for sure.”

Six of the nine Wolves notched at least one ace, with Madison McMillan, Issabel Johnson, and Gwen Gustafson recording five apiece to pace the team.

Issabel Johnson cranks up the ace machine.

After a crush of games in a short stretch of days, Coupeville is off until next Tuesday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Concrete.

With her team back in practice mode over the next six days, Menges will continue to preach improvement and fine-tuning of skills.

“As we’re getting to the end of our first round playing the league, we’re gonna start challenging the girls to hold a standard,” she said.

“I’m wanting these girls to continue to have great games as they continue to progress in their skills.

“I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve already made, but I’m even more excited for what’s to come.”

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 assist, 3 aces
Mia Farris — 3 aces
Gwen Gustafson — 3 kills, 5 aces
Jada Heaton — 1 kill
Issabel Johnson — 5 aces
Katie Marti — 2 assists, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 1 kill, 1 dig, 6 aces
Grey Peabody — 1 solo block
Aby Wood  — 1 kill
