One bad test, lots of fall-out.

A positive COVID-19 result for a member of the Friday Harbor High School boys track and field team will derail its scheduled football opener.

That’s because many of the school’s track athletes are also football players, and will have to sit out for two weeks.

That game, set for April 9, was supposed to be a road contest at Coupeville.

The Wolves will instead pick up a game with La Conner to take its place, but will play Saturday, April 10 instead.

Kickoff is 6 PM.

“It was better for the officials (to move to Saturday),” said Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith.

The move creates a bit of a conflict for CHS workers, as Coupeville also hosts its home volleyball opener the same day, with JV at 3:30 and varsity at 5:00.

But, it is what it is, in this Age of Coronavirus.

“We don’t have a lot of wiggle room in our short seasons this year,” Smith said.

With opponents flipped out, the hope is Coupeville football will still have a four-game schedule in this pandemic-shortened campaign.

After the opener, the Wolf gridiron squad is off until Friday, April 23, when it travels to Friday Harbor.

A road game at La Conner April 30, and a home contest May 8 versus Concrete comprise the pared-down schedule.

As we transition from spring sports into traditional fall sports, info on how fan seating will be handled for football, volleyball, and soccer will be released later this week, Smith said.

UPDATE — 3/30 @ 2:45 PM:

Volleyball start times changed to 11 AM for JV and 12:30 PM for varsity. So no conflict.

The photos rain down as fast as the wins.

As the Coupeville High School softball squad rolls through an undefeated season, there have been frequent visits to the diamond by camera-wielding paparazzi.

One of the best of those lens lovers is Jackie Saia, who provides us with the photos above and below.

Eryn Wood (left) and Noelle Daigneault are expected to be team leaders when they return next spring.

They ran the table.

6-0 in team matches.

30-0 in individual varsity matches.

The battle for the Northwest 2B/1B League title during this pandemic-shortened season was a two-school rumble between Coupeville and Friday Harbor, and the former dominated the latter.

Putting a final punctuation mark on the whole affair, the Wolves closed their most-recent campaign with another 5-0 win over the Wolverines, this one coming Monday at Friday Harbor.

Now, in a lightning-fast turnaround, Coupeville coach Ken Stange bids adieu to his female netters, and will be back on the CHS courts Tuesday to welcome his boys squad back to action.

With traditional fall sports being played AFTER spring sports as everyone deals with the fallout from Covid, the Wolf boys will play the first of their six matches April 7.

Stange, now in his 16th year of coaching both CHS net squads, got the most he could out of the girls season, shuffling players around and giving as many volleyers as possible a crack at playing in a varsity match.

Monday’s road trip was the final prep tennis match for three Wolf seniors, as Jaimee Masters, Emily Fiedler, and Genna Wright wrapped up long, successful runs.

Masters and Fiedler played as Stange’s #1 doubles duo during their senior campaign, while Wright lived at #1 singles for her entire four-year CHS journey.

Complete Monday results:

1st Singles — Genna Wright beat Allie Fleming 6-0, 6-1

The one on the far right is from Coupeville. The other two just wish they were. (Photo property U.S. Marine Corps)

Never stop winning.

Kyle King, a five-time state track and field champion back in his Coupeville High School days, continues to haul in awards out in the real world.

The 2008 CHS grad has been selected as the United State Marine Corps Male Athlete of the Year for 2020.

First Lieutenant Mackenzie Margroum and Captain Toni Paruso, who are both swimmers, share the Female Athlete of the Year.

The award honors active duty Marines who “demonstrate the best that the Corps has to offer both in sport and the embodiment of Marine Corps values.”

King is an Artillery Officer currently serving as an Inspector-Instructor in 5th Battalion, 14th Marines, based out of Colorado.

A member of the All-Marine Running Team since 2015, the former Wolf supernova has piled up the accomplishments in recent years.

He finished 8th in the marathon at the most-recent Military World Games in China, claimed 16th at the USATF Cross Country Championships, and competed in the 2020 Olympic Trials.

Back in his Coupeville days, the middle of Randy and Laurie King’s three children — following Brianne and preceding Tyler — was one of the finest athletes to ever pull on the red and black.

During his days on Whidbey, Kyle won state titles in the 3200 three straight years (2006-2008), added the 1600 crown in 2007, and ran a leg on a triumphant 4 x 400 relay unit in 2006.

He still holds the school record in the 3200 and 4 x 400 (with some help from Steven McDonald, Chris Hutchinson, and Jon Chittim).

After graduation, King ran as an NCAA D-I scholarship athlete at two schools – Eastern Washington University and the University of Oklahoma.
