The moms are in mid-season form.

Saturday was just a jamboree for the Coupeville Middle School football squad — real games start next week — but team moms Deb Smith and Cheridan Eck are already killin’ it with the photos.

They’ve set the bar high and we appreciate it. Greatly.

A new season kicks off today.

With Coupeville High School still riding high off last night’s win at Chimacum, its middle school counterparts boarded the bus Saturday morning to head to a jamboree at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

CMS will play the host school, as well as Forks and Chimacum at the all-day affair, then lace it up for real Wednesday, Sept. 23 when Stevens comes to Whidbey.

That school, which the Wolves haven’t played before, boasts 600+ students and has a football roster that groans with 70 players.

By contrast, Coupeville coach Bob Martin has 26 guys to call on at the moment.

They are:

Noa Allen
Raymond Anderson
Trevor Jon Bell
Tyson Bovee
Michael Brewer
Koa Davison
Sage Downes
Dakota Eck
Trystan Ford
Mason Grove
Dawson Houston
Alex Jimenez
Elliott Johnson
Matthew Kelley

Aram Leyva, about to ruin the goalie’s whole day.

All your scores belong to Coupeville.

Well, almost all of them.

Wolf players accounted for all but one goal Saturday, as the North Whidbey Islanders boys’ FC-01 soccer squad pummeled a Seattle team 7-1.

Matthew Kelley led the way with a hat trick, twice scoring on plays where he bounced the ball over his defender, slipped around him and then drilled the ball into the corner of the net as it came down.

“Never seen anything like it!,” said proud papa Pat Kelley.

Hot on his heels was teammate Aram Leyva, who tallied two goals in the game’s opening five minutes.

Jake Mitten rounded out the Coupeville scoring brigade with a booming 20-yard shot that came off a nice set-up from James Wood.

The only goal scored by a non-Wolf was set up by a Cow Town kid, as North Whidbey drew a penalty kick when Coupeville’s Sam Wynn was de-cleated on a play.

While he didn’t score a goal, Sage Downes also made his presence felt, setting up one of Kelley’s scores with his usual crisp passing.

The Islanders return to action Sept. 19 when they play a Crossfire squad at Fort Nugent.

Matthew Kelley operates in the open field.

Play the best to be the best.

Of course, if you play the best as you’re working your way up, it’s quite likely you take some licks along the way.

Such was the case last weekend for the North Whidbey Islanders FC-01 boys’ soccer squad.

The Islanders, who claim several Coupeville players on their roster, faced off with four Division 1 squads and emerged from tournament play with a 0-3-1 record.

Whidbey was a Division 3 team last year, and was also playing down five starters.

Even in the losses, the Islanders got strong play from their Wolf gunslingers.

Matthew Kelley collected two goals and two assists during the tourney, while Aram Leyva and Sage Downes each notched a goal.

Jake Mitten and Samuel Wynn sparkled on defense for Whidbey, while newcomer Jean Lund-Olsen made a stellar debut as a defender.

The Islanders begin league play Sept. 5.

The champs celebrate with CHS boys’ hoop coach (and proud dad) Anthony Smith.

Like father, like daughter.

Sparked by the offspring of two Coupeville High School basketball coaches, a group of sixth grade girls swept to an undefeated record and a championship at a tourney in Arlington this weekend.

The four-player squad rolled through the 3-on-3 tourney like pros and left their papas with huge grins.

“Loving some summer hoops and watching my little one grow,” said CHS boys’ JV hoops coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Very proud of this group of girls and the way they battled.”

Dustin’s daughter Kylie, who will be moving up to Coupeville Middle School in a few weeks, was joined by Malaysia Smith, Kayleigh Bungard and Kaci French.

Those three are from Ferndale, with Malaysia being the daughter of Wolf boys’ varsity coach Anthony Smith.
