Young guns, runnin’ through the rain

A little rain won’t slow them down.

Or even a lot of rain.

Running through the liquid sunshine in Granite Falls Saturday, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad put up a stellar team-wide performance at the 5th annual Mountain Loop Invitational.

The scrappy Wolves notched third place in both of the team competitions, with Cavelero Mid-High, out of Lake Stevens, claiming top honors.

In the individual standings, Coupeville collected four top 10 performances, with Anna Powers and Sarai Dangerfield finishing second and third, respectively, in the girls rumble.

While the weather made navigating the 1.7-mile course a bit difficult at times, the Wolves held up well.

“It has been raining the whole time!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman. “The runners did great! The hill was muddy and wet, so a few fell on it, but they pushed through and finished strong!”

Coupeville is headed back to Granite next week, slated to appear at the Granite Gallop Wednesday, Oct. 15. The weather forecast for that day calls for sun.

Spikers scramble, spar with Tigers

“Life moves pretty fast.”

Ferris Bueller could have been talking about Coupeville Middle School volleyball, which had to scramble mid-week, when a scheduling snafu changed its home match at the last second.

The Wolf spikers were expecting to host Granite Falls Thursday, but wham, bam, why is there an unknown bus in the parking lot on Wednesday?

To the courts, maybe not fully ready!

“Wednesday was unexpected, but as they have been doing all season, the girls adjusted and played hard,” said CMS coach Shaloma Allen.

“It was a scramble for everyone. The ref approved us being out of uniform, the girls had a 20-minute warning and we played hard.”

Along the way, rosters got tweaked on the fly.

“Several of our girls had to leave at the regular time for practice to end so we scrambled teams together,” Allen said. “Granite Falls came ready to play and were a tough opponent.

“The girls did their best, adjusted well to the new challenge and gave it their all.”

Coupeville put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell in all three matches, with the varsity losing 25-20, 25-15, 15-13.

The Wolf JV was edged 25-11, 25-13, 15-9, while the C-Team nabbed a consolation price by taking the third set in a 26-24, 25-12, 14-16 loss.

With four matches left in the middle school season, the CMS spikers host Northshore Christian Academy Oct. 14, then welcome Sultan to town Oct. 16.

After that, the Wolves finish on the road with clashes at Lakewood and South Whidbey.

CMS spikers on the rise

They’re showing great promise.

Through three matches, Coupeville Middle School volleyball players continue to display ever-growing skill and a never-say-die attitude.

While the Wolves weren’t able to topple powerhouse King’s Monday, the Wolves did give their hosts a furious fight, winning a set in each rumble.

“The girls did great yesterday,” said CMS coach Shaloma Allen. “They are growing as a team, and we all had a great time.”

How Coupeville fared:

 

Varsity:

King’s held on for a 25-19, 17-25, 15-11 win, ultimately nipping the Wolves by just two points total.

“Varsity battled hard against a tough opponent,” Allen said.

“The team’s progress is undeniable. Each match, they’re gelling more as a unit, and their skills are sharpening with every play.”

 

JV:

Another close one, with King’s only finishing three points better in a 26-24, 20-25, 15-9 nailbiter.

“The junior varsity team also brought their A-game!” Allen said. “Their consistent improvement is something special.

“These players are learning fast and playing with so much heart!”

 

C-Team:

Coupeville came out blazing, winning the first set 26-24, before King’s rebounded to snag the next two frames 25-14 and 15-3 for the victory.

“The C-Team started strong, showcasing their potential and teamwork,” Allen said. “Sets two and three were tougher, but their spirit never wavered.

“This group is laying a solid foundation, and I’m excited to see their growth as the season continues.”

 

After back-to-back road trips, Coupeville plays its next three at home, starting with a match against Granite Falls this Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3:15 PM.

Allen is looking forward to Wolf fans getting a chance to see the spikers in action up close and personal.

“All three teams showed resilience, teamwork, and a positive attitude that makes coaching them such a joy,” she said.

“We’re building momentum and can’t wait to keep pushing forward in our next game!”

Hard work, big results

“I’m really proud of my runners. They’re putting in serious miles.”

Amber Wyman’s harriers got a chance to show off their fleet feet Saturday, participating in the 29th annual John Payne XC Invitational at University Place.

The mega-event, which featured both high school and middle school races, drew upwards of 150 teams.

It made for a long, but thrilling day for the CMS runners, who zipped across a 1.5-mile course.

“A great day!” Wyman said. “Beautiful weather, fun crowd and lots of running!

“Several (Wolves) are close too or have gone over 100 miles at practice,” she added. “They are working so hard, and it is paying off!”

Coupeville keeps things hopping with another road trip next Saturday, Oct. 11, when it heads to Granite Falls to vie in the Mountain Loop Invitational.

The Wolves get a bit rowdy.
