Your middle school basketball coaching destiny beckons!

This is your moment. Seize it.

There are not one, but two, Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball coaching positions open as the season rapidly approaches.

Kassie O’Neil bounced up to the high school, accepting the JV girls’ gig, while Kristina Forbes is resigning due to other obligations.

That leaves the CMS girls hoops program without any coaches, with the season set to start Jan. 23.

It’s basically a six-week job, with the eight-game campaign wrapping up Mar. 9, and you would have the chance to help shape the future of Wolf basketball.

Are you a former Coupeville basketball player looking to give back to where it all started? Bam!

Maybe a semi-retired coach who still gets that itch to be on the sideline? Boom!

Or just someone who has always longed to take the “seven seconds or less” offense and put it in the hands of 12-year-old girls, creating a gym-rattling, mind-fracturing attack guaranteed to blow up the scoreboard and exhaust the refs???

As mentioned before, this is your moment.

Seize it and let Haylee Armstrong and Tenley Stuurmans become the Steve Nash and Shawn Marion of the prairie.

 

PS — Athletic Director Willie Smith is also looking for middle school track and cross country coaches, as well as a high school girls soccer coach.

We’re just talking about basketball because it’s God’s chosen sport.

Step up and coach

Looking for a job? Maybe the coaching life is for you.

Coupeville schools currently list five open positions on the district web site, with three being varsity high school head coaching gigs.

Wolf Athletic Director Willie Smith needs to tab new leaders for the CHS baseball, boys soccer, and cross country programs, while also hiring a middle school volleyball coach and a boys high school JV basketball coach.

The baseball and JV basketball positions came open when jack of all trades Chris Smith left Whidbey in the spring.

He had also coached high school JV volleyball, though former Wolf player Ashley Menges has been offered that position.

Her hire has not been officially approved by the school board, however, as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has shut down all athletic contests since February.

The cross country job opened when Wolf coach Luke Samford and his wife, Hayley, moved to Kansas in May.

Erin Locke accepted a new job in Bremerton around the same time period, opening the middle school volleyball job, while the high school soccer coaching position came open thanks to a quirk.

With CHS dropping from 1A to 2B and returning to its old-school stomping grounds, the Northwest 2B/1B League, the Wolves will play boys and girls soccer during the same season.

Kyle Nelson previously led both programs, but decided to step away from the boys job to focus on the girls team.

Bamberger hits pause

The living legend has left the building. For the moment, at least.

Natasha Bamberger, a five-time state champion in running events for Coupeville High School, returned to her alma mater last fall to revive a successful, but long-shuttered, cross country program.

Under her guidance, the Wolves returned to the trails for the first time in two decades, and immediately began to rebuild and impress.

She fielded a full boys team, led by state meet veteran Danny Conlisk, and had a strong one-two combo on the girls side with Catherine Lhamon and Alana Mihill.

With fellow coach Elizabeth Bitting launching a very-strong middle school program at the same time, Coupeville cross country is well on its way to recapturing the glory days it enjoyed when Bamberger won the state cross country title in 1985.

Now, though, her runners will have to go on without her.

Bamberger has resigned as CHS cross country coach, as real-world work issues have reduced her availability to coach.

“This was really hard and a decision I have struggled with,” she said. “It breaks my heart to have to resign coaching cross country this season, but bringing in an income for my family is my reality at this stage of my life.

“I hope my team knows how much I have enjoyed working with them,” Bamberger added. “How much I respect their continued hard work, in becoming a team, a cross country family.”

Having rekindled the fire, she looks forward to seeing future Wolves make a run at the kind of success she enjoyed during her own high school days.

Along with Kyle King, she is one of two Wolves in school history (1900-2019) to win five state titles, and the only one to have all of her championships come in individual events.

Along with her cross country crown, Bamberger ruled the track oval, copping titles in the 1600 in 1984, and the 3200 in ’84, ’85, and ’86.
