Get in on the ground floor.

Coupeville elementary school students dreaming of being the next generation of Wolf volleyball stars can get started today.

Or April 12 to be exact, when Coupeville High School coaches and players relaunch the Wolf Pups program.

Sidelined by the pandemic, the series of practices open to students in grades 3-5 is back and you can be part of it.

For all your details, jump up to the photo above.

“I’m very excited to get this started again and hopefully there won’t be any disruptions,” said CHS head coach Cory Whitmore.

Coming off of a high school season where young athletes had a huge impact for his program, Whitmore gives a lot of the credit to Wolf players getting in the gym as soon as possible.

“I think this is a huge reason why our current freshman class has excelled,” he said. “They were involved early and joined club (teams) soon thereafter because of the introduction.

“I’m hoping to build that back up.”

The program is meant to offer a boost for young players, but Whitmore also understands the need to be flexible if his athletes are pursuing more than one activity.

“I often get questions about how people are interested but their kids are already committed to other sports, hobbies, groups, etc.,” he said.

“I always tell them if their kid needs to leave early, arrive late or only make it to one of the two days a week, that is perfectly fine.”

Wolf softball guru Kevin McGranahan, coming off a 12-0 season, has led the diamond program to four-straight winning campaigns.

It’s a two-man battle, with a third lurking.

When you look at Coupeville High School’s sports programs, volleyball and softball have had the most sustained success over the past half-decade plus.

The Wolf spikers, currently sitting at 5-2, are playing for a sixth-straight winning season, all under coach Cory Whitmore.

CHS is 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B league play this year, and has eight matches, seven against conference foes, remaining on the schedule.

Meanwhile, the softballers, playing for Kevin McGranahan, have put together four consecutive campaigns which ended with more wins than losses.

The only other Coupeville coach with an active streak of back-to-back winning seasons is football guru Marcus Carr.

His gridiron teams have finished 3-2 and 5-4 the past two campaigns, and are 1-2 this time around, with five games left to play on the regular-season schedule.

Boys basketball (Brad Sherman), girls tennis (Ken Stange), and baseball (Will Thayer) each have a current one-year streak of winning seasons.

Whitmore and McGranahan both were hired in 2016, both taking over programs which had a losing record the season before.

Since then, they’ve each won 60 games and taken a team to state, though their paths slightly diverge.

Whitmore is the only current CHS coach in any sport with more than one season under their belt to never post a losing record.

Meanwhile McGranahan’s softball squad went 12-0 this spring, believed to be the best finish by any Wolf team in school history, in any sport.

Unfortunately, Covid restrictions scrapped any form of playoffs for the diamond queens.

Which is still better than 2020, when the pandemic erased the whole season for spring teams.

How the coaches with the longest active-winning streaks at CHS match-up through Oct. 1, 2021, with Whitmore set to move ahead with a win next Tuesday at home against Concrete.

Cory Whitmore:

2016: 11-6
2017: 13-5 (State)
2018: 11-5
2019: 14-5
2020: 6-3 (Partial season – Covid)
2021: 5-2 (Active)

Total: 60-26

Kevin McGranahan:

2016: 9-11
2017: 12-9
2018: 12-9
2019: 15-10 (State)
2020: No season – Covid
2021: 12-0 (Partial season – Covid)

Total: 60-39

“Volleyball skills camps are back!!” (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

With volleyball fever at an all-time high in Coupeville, now is a perfect time for Wolf spikers, young and old, to fine-tune their floor game or learn the basics.

Coupeville High School and Middle School coaches, led by Cory Whitmore, will host two skills camps in June, providing a mix of learning and fun.

The first camp, for incoming K-6 students, is set for June 12-13, with a camp for incoming 7-12 students going down June 21-24.

Both clinics will be held in the CHS gym.

Cost is $20 for K-6, which has two three-hour practices, and $30 for 7-12, which consists of four two-hour events.

The younger players will play from 9 AM-noon during their sessions, with the older players meeting from 5-7 PM each night.

Payment can be made by cash or check made out to “Coupeville High School volleyball,” and is paid on the first day of camp.

You need to register, however, and the deadline to insure you get a camp t-shirt is June 7 for K-6 and June 14 for 7-12.

Students should wear athletic clothes to camp, with indoor shoes, and bring a water bottle.

Masks are required on school property, participants will be socially distanced, and parents need to sign a daily medical attestation that their child is not displaying COVID-19 symptoms.

This form has to be signed AT THE DOOR before each day of the camp.

For more information, contact Whitmore at cwhitmore@coupeville.k12.wa.us or (509) 347-6301.

CMS spikers such as Mia Farris won’t get to play matches against other schools this school year, but they can still play. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Hope is not lost.

While it appears most Coupeville Middle School sports programs will remain shut down through the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, volleyball players are being offered an outlet.

Wolves currently in grades 6-8 at CMS can participate in intramurals from March 2 to April 1, at no cost.

The CHS/CMS coaching staff, led by head coach Cory Whitmore, will hold practice/game nights Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week.

Each session is from 4-6 PM in the high school and middle school gym.

Coupeville schools are not charging any fees for athletics or activities this school year, but state health department guidelines require all participants wear a mask.
