"And I said stay down!!" Downes delivers a forearm shiver

“And I said stay down!!” Downes delivers the “Hand o’ Death” as he sends a defender crashing.

Win or lose, mom is always there for you.

Win or lose, mom is always there for you.

A new Downes rises.

Following in the football footsteps of older brothers Hunter and Sage, Logan Downes, a third grader at Coupeville Elementary School, has burst onto the gridiron scene.

As a starting running back and free safety for the Oak Harbor Pee Wee Wildcats, the youngest Downes has helped guide his squad to a 5-1 record.

With Downes stiff-arming would-be tacklers as he charges down the field — he has eight touchdowns with another four called back by penalties against his blockers — the Wildcats mauled their first five opponents.

The run came to a brief stop this weekend, when a late fumble on a kick return cost Oak Harbor a 20-13 loss to an undefeated Stanwood Red squad.

While the loss stings, it should only be a temporary setback for the multi-talented Downes.

Most of his scoring runs have been of the epic variety, with most covering between 30 and 50 yards.

He’s also a pass-catching threat and is expected to move behind center eventually and become a quarterback like older brother Hunter, a freshman at CHS.

A true two-way player, Logan also combines speed and sure hands to be ruthless when patrolling the secondary from his safety position.

If you hold it, they will come.

Coupeville High School’s volleyball players and coaches held a free clinic for local kids in grade K-6 Thursday and got a sizable turnout.

Wolf coach Breanne Smedley estimated the turnout at between 25-30 young players.

“It was great!,” she said. “The CHS players did a great job of running the courts as the kids rotated through skill stations.

“The kids and players both had a blast and learned a lot!,” Smedley added. “It was great to see so many youngsters excited about volleyball and our volleyball players stepping up to lead them.”

The Wolves will host a second free K-6 clinic Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10-11:30 AM.

You’re never too young to be a gridiron warrior.

The Boys and Girls Club is starting a four-week flag football program for Coupeville kids in grades 3-6, which will give young athletes a chance to pick up the sport in a fun, low-key environment long before they reach middle and high school.

Cost is $25 and the clinics, which start this Thursday, Sept. 18, will cover offense, defense, throwing techniques, stretching, light conditioning, and rules.

To register, email Jamie@coupevilleboysandgirlsclub.org or call (360) 678-5640.

You thought we didn’t appreciate the finer arts here at Coupeville Sports?

You thought wrong, Skippy.

Proving once again that there are two words in the name of this blog, we’re taking a mini-detour to explore one of the many scholastic offshoots found in the first word — Coupeville.

Today’s contributor to the arts is Coupeville Elementary School poet Wynter Arndt, who, along with her third grade classmates, recently held a poetry cafe for their classmates, parents and literary fans.

Arndt, daughter of renown local lawyer Charles Arndt and former CHS sports sensation turned legendary farmer Georgie Smith, crafted the poems above, which she has been kind enough to let us reprint.

Thank you, Wynter. Write on!

Everyone scored. Almost.

Passing the ball with conviction, the Coupeville Elementary School students who patrol the soccer pitch for the Central Whidbey soccer squad sponsored by Ciao found the net with stunning regularity this season.

17 of 19 players scored at least one goal as the U12 team went 13-5. The only two not to hammer home a goal were slowed by injury.

Wrapping their season with conviction, the booters whipped the Oak Harbor Crushers 8-1 and 8-0 Saturday to wrap their season. Four Ciao players scored for the first time in the wins.

Leading into the final weekend, part of the squad took on, and soundly defeated, its fifth grade teachers from CES 5-1 in a “friendly” earlier in the week.

The impressive roster:

5th grade:
