“They ran amazing!”

They’re island hoppers and speed demons.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad bounced over to Orcas Island Wednesday for a four-team meet, then the Wolves tore up the trail between ferry rides.

Elizabeth Bitting’s harriers claimed second-place in the girls’ team standings and third in the boys, with Friday Harbor and Evangel Classical taking top honors, respectively.

Friday Harbor sophomore Flora Compton and Evangel junior Joshua Sarr hit the tape first, with Coupeville’s Mikayla Wagner and George Spear a close second in their 5,000-meter races.

Overall, CHS had five runners claim top-five finishes, with 22 Wolves competing.

“They ran amazing,” Bitting said. “Now I know where they stand, what they need to do, and how to get there.

“We all learned a lot today. Quite a few PR’s from those who ran it last year,” she added. “Johnny Jacobsen was most impressive with a four-minute PR!!”

Coupeville gets back at it next Wednesday, Oct. 1, when it hosts a five-team home meet at Fort Casey State Park.

Powers, Wagner pace CMS harriers

A new pack of runners has entered the conversation.

While Coupeville’s high school cross country team has already participated in several meets, Saturday marked the season debut for the Wolf middle school harriers.

The CMS runners took to the trail in Langley, taking part in the 46th annual Carl Westling Invitational, and the young guns made their mark in a 3,000-meter race.

Sparked by top-five finishes from Anna Powers and Lincoln Wagner, the Wolves claimed second place in the boys team standings, and fourth in the girls showdown.

Up next for Coupeville is a trip to Sultan Friday, Sept. 26 for the Return of the Salmon Invitational.

Shoes optional, heart mandatory

It was a wild day.

Competing along with 40+ other schools at the Carl Westling Invitational Saturday in Langley, the Coupeville High School cross country team made some memories.

From George Spear becoming the first Wolf in recent memory to make it to the awards podium at the prestigious meet to Cyrus Sparacio completing the race minus a shoe, the trip down-Island was a memorable one.

Overall, CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting sent 17 runners to the line against prime competition.

Those harriers in action covered 5,000 meters across “a varied surface including forest trail, grass, gravel, and track surface.”

And Sparacio, a speedy freshman, covered most of that distance with a shoe on one foot, and just a sock on the other.

He lost his foot covering within the first half mile, but never slowed down.

“He tried quickly tying it, kept running, did not do a good job and it flew off but he kept on going,” Bitting said with a laugh. “He ran a decent time on top of it!!”

Coupeville’s runners (and their shoes, hopefully) will get back at it this coming Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Orcas Island for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet.

CMS revs up for fall sports

It’s their time to shine.

With high school sports underway in Coupeville, the older Wolves will soon be joined by their middle school compatriots, who kick off fall sports action starting this weekend.

CMS features cross country and volleyball, with students in grades 6-8 eligible to participate.

The middle school football program was shut down several years back, but 8th graders can play up with the high school soccer teams, and a fair amount of booters have accepted the challenge this fall.

Big crowd, fleet feet

The path was packed.

Runners from 46 schools, including Coupeville High School, participated in the 15th annual GearUp Northwest Cross Country Preview Saturday in Bellingham.

Things went down at Civic Stadium, and with so many harriers in attendance, the field was broken down into multiple races.

Coupeville sent 21 runners to the line across nine events, with senior George Spear netting the fastest time of any Wolf.

Sophomore Mikayla Wagner posted the quickest run for the CHS girls, with everyone in red and black bringing a smile to coach Elizabeth Bitting’s face.

“Today went AMAZING!!” she said.

“It is so fun to see how they do and where they place. I now know where we stand and what we have to do.

“Each team is coming along but now is the time to push a little harder and run a little further.”

Coupeville will be back on the course, but a little closer to home, next Saturday, Sept. 20, when it competes at the 46th annual Carl Westling Invitational, hosted by South Whidbey High School.
