The bright future, and present, of Wolf cross country. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The fish are back, apparently, and so are the harriers.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country team sent 27 runners to the line Friday in Sultan at the uniquely named Return of the Salmon Invitational.

The six-team event, which went down at Osprey Park, featured a 3,000-meter course.

Two Wolf girls and four boys cracked the top 10, with 7th grader Henry Purdue leading the way with a third-place finish.

Overall, the Wolf boys claimed the team title, while their female counterparts finished second.

“Amazing meet today!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman. “This is such a determined group, and they were so excited!

“They were cheering for each other, giving advice to each other and helping out others,” she added. “Nothing better than that!

“A beautiful day and amazing running!”

Sultan gave out special prizes, with top 10 finishers earning a commemorative t-shirt, and finishers in slots 11-20 being awarded a fish necklace.

Coupeville gets back at it next week, but a lot closer to home, when it hosts a meet Thursday, Oct. 3 at Fort Casey State Park.

Meet #1 is in the books.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country squad kicked off a new season in style Saturday with an appearance at the 45th annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley.

The young Wolves put four runners on the awards podium, earned second-place in the team standings for both girls and boys, and wowed their coach.

“They did amazing today!” said Amber Wyman. “I am so impressed and proud of their work and dedication.

“They have had four full weeks of training before our first race, and it shows with so many amazing PR’s!”

Nearly half of Coupeville’s runners this season are 6th graders, with the group showing continued improvement every run.

“Plan on more PRs as the season progresses,” Wyman said. “This is a determined crew, and they have goals to achieve!”

CMS gets right back at it next week with a trip to Sultan Friday, Sept. 27 for the Return of the Salmon Invitational.

The odyssey begins.

The middle school track and field meet that’s too big for just one day began Wednesday in Lakewood, as seven schools clashed in the opening round of the Cascade League Championships.

Day one featured a mix of prelims and finals, with Wolf 7th grader Tamsin Ward crowned as league shot put champ.

The victory was her 11th of the season, tying her with her performance as a 6th grader.

Ward and associates will have another chance to capture glory next Wednesday, May 29, when Cascade League competitors return to Lakewood to finish off the two-day season-closer.

With Coupeville halfway to the finish line, coaches Jon Gabelein and Amber Wyman are feeling good about what the Wolves have accomplished, and what’s still ahead.

“We had 63 students here today,” Gabelein said. “I am very proud of the work so many of our athletes have been doing throughout our season.

“The results of their hard work really showed up tonight!”

It’s been a season-long quest, and the young Wolves have made a solid commitment to growth and improvement.

“Students often hear me say that their great accomplishments are not because of luck or magic,” Gabelein said. “They are proof of their continued hard work and being willing to push themselves to be even better.”

Rain? What rain? (Amber Wyman photos)

They were weather warriors.

Dodging liquid sunshine and slipping and sliding on the 1.7-mile course, Coupeville Middle School cross country runners held up well Thursday at the Granite Gallop.

The Wolf girls, who had five of the first 15 finishers, claimed 3rd in the team standings, while the CMS boys were 4th overall.

The event drew 161 runners from seven schools.

“We had a great, if very rainy day at Granite Falls!” said Coupeville coach Amber Wyman.

“The runners were up for the challenge of rain and mud!” she added. “They ran hard, and we came away with some strong finishes.”

The Wolves are off for a bit, returning to action next Friday, Oct. 6 at the Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational at Lakewood.

“Wolves on three!”

“This team can handle any course they encounter.”

Running guru Jon Gabelein, standing in for Coupeville Middle School coach Amber Wyman while she transported her son to college Saturday, guided the young Wolves to a strong team-wide performance in Shoreline.

CMS competed in the 16th annual King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run, placing five female harriers in the top 10.

That group was led by Lillian Ketterling, who claimed 5th place, while the Wolf boys were topped by Isaiah Allen, who hit the tape in 13th place.

“They were definitely ready to ride the “roller coaster” today,” Gabelein said. “Running hard at the home meet just two days ago didn’t seem to slow them down.

“Maybe we should have two meets a week more often?”

The coach’s enthusiasm was matched by his athletes, with Mary Western telling Gabelein “It was hilly but fun!” and Elizabeth Marshall commenting “It was a roller coaster of pain, but it felt good when it ended!”

Saturday’s 1.6-mile run marked the mid-point of Coupeville’s six-meet middle school season.

Next up for CMS is a jaunt to Granite Falls Thursday, Sept. 28, for the Granite Gallop.
