Danny Conlisk (second from right) may have been the lone Wolf on the line, but he won the race.

Chris Battaglia was locked in.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth grader won two events en route to four top-three finishes Wednesday at a three-team track meet in Sultan.

Battaglia swept to wins in the discus and high jump, placed third in the shot put and claimed second in the long jump — an event he picked up at the last moment because he needed something to do while waiting for his regular events.

“He had great results! Amazing athlete, some PRs … pretty good meet!,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

Other multiple winners included Maya Toomey-Stout (100, long jump), Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles, 200) and Danny Conlisk (200, 1600).

Mallory Kortuem (400), Gabe Eck (100), Jasmine Nastali (long jump) and Cassidy Moody (100 hurdles) rounded out the Wolf winners, as CMS ran away with 12 titles.

Lakewood and Sultan had much deeper teams than Coupeville and used their superior depth to claim the team titles on a day when the temperature climbed to a sticky 80 degrees.

If Lindsey Roberts is the new Makana Stone, then Danny Conlisk is the new Lindsey Roberts.

Roberts continued her perfect start to her 8th grade track season, ripping off two more wins Wednesday at a four-team meet in Shoreline, but Conlisk went her one better.

While Roberts cruised to wins in both sprints (200) and sprinting while evading obstacles (100 hurdles), Conlisk rolled, snatching victories in the 100, 200 and 1600.

Together, the duo accounted for five of Coupeville Middle School’s eight wins.

Seventh grade hurdlers Cassidy Moody and Jean Lund-Olsen and eighth grade high jumper Chris Battaglia also came away with top of the podium performances.

Langley swept both team titles on the girls side of the competition, while King’s (8th) and Northshore Christian (7th) split the boys titles.

The life of a track star — sitting around, waiting for your event to be called.

“By the time they get this race started, we’ll be in college…”

Lindsey Roberts is in a hurry.

The Coupeville Middle School eight grader hasn’t been caught in a race this year yet, adding four more wins (200, 1600, 100 hurdles, 4 x 100 relay) to her resume Thursday in a three-team meet in Langley.

Oh yeah, and Roberts also set PRs in all three of her individual races. No big deal, just another day at the (oval) office.

The Wolf girls were especially strong in the relays, winning the 4 x 100 in both the 7th grade race (Mallory Kortuem, Avalon Renninger, Tia Wurzrainer, Maya Toomey-Stout) and 8th grade contest (Roberts, Ashlie Shank, Emma Smith, Jasmine Nastali).

On the boys side, CMS won seven events, sweeping the long jump (Sean Toomey-Stout, Gabe Eck), High Jump (Mason Testroet, Chris Battaglia) and 1600 (Tucker Hall, Danny Conlisk).

Battaglia was a two-time champ, also claiming first in the discus.

The meet brought together Island rivals Coupeville and Langley, with main-lander Granite Falls tossed in just for fun.

Lindsey Roberts is the new Makana Stone.

Setting her track season off with a bang, the Coupeville Middle School eighth grader won all three of her solo events Wednesday at a season-opening four-team meet in Shoreline.

Shredding her opponents just like Stone, who has set school records left and right for the Wolves in three seasons of high school track, Roberts won the 200, 1600 and 100 hurdles.

She accounted for three of Coupeville’s seven wins on the day, with fellow eighth graders Danny Conlisk (1600) and Gabe Eck (long jump) joining her at the top of the charts.

The CMS seventh graders were led by Maya Toomey-Stout (100 hurdles) and the 4 x 200 relay squad (Jillian Mayne, Anna Dion, Oliana Stange, Megan Thorn), who also recorded wins.

Host King’s won the eighth grade boys’ team battle, while Lakewood captured the seventh grade boys title and swept both girls competitions.
