The shoes are squeaking on gym floors, the basketball is pounding on the hardwood, and the start of a new season is days away.

He could retire undefeated.

Now, there are still nine games left on the Coupeville Middle School boys basketball schedule, and it’s doubtful Dante Mitchell is going to quit any time soon.

But, after guiding the Wolf 8th graders to a 39-33 win Thursday in Sequim, his record as a coach is flawless.

The same can’t be said for Brian Shank, who was filling in for Bob Martin while the veteran round-ball guru is away on a business trip.

Despite Shank’s best coaching moves, the undermanned CMS 7th graders were stuffed 53-6 by their big school rivals.

8th grade rolls:

Mitchell got scoring from six of the eight players on his roster, with Xavier Murdy leading the way with a game-high 11.

Grady Rickner banged away for eight, Caleb Meyer threw down seven and Logan Martin banked home six.

Hawthorne Wolf added five, while Cody Roberts dropped in a bucket to round out the scoring.

Aiden Burdge and Gabe Shaw also saw action for the Wolves, who return home to host Stevens next Monday.

7th grade survives:

The young guns have a thin roster, and, it appears, ran out of steam, failing to score in the final three quarters

Isaiah Bittner led the way with five points, while Dominic Coffman netted a free-throw for Coupeville’s other point.

Former Wolf hoops player Dante Mitchell has been hired to coach basketball at Coupeville Middle School. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Like mother, like son.

Former Coupeville High School basketball star Dante Mitchell is following in the coaching footsteps of mom Avis, and his first job as a head coach will come at his former stomping grounds.

Mitchell, who graduated alongside twin brother DeAndre in 2016, has been tabbed as the new 8th grade boys basketball coach for Coupeville Middle School.

He joins veteran whistle-blower Bob Martin, who will run the 7th grade program this fall.

The job opening came because longtime round-ball sage Randy King is taking a break from the bench while preparing for hip surgery.

Mitchell’s hiring, announced by CHS/CMS Athletic Director Willie Smith, needs final, official approval from the school board.

That would come at their next meeting Nov. 27.

CMS boys hoops kicks off a new season with the first day of practice Monday, Nov. 6.

The Wolves play a 10-game season, with their first battle a road game at Sequim Nov. 30. Mitchell’s home debut as a head coach is Dec. 4.

After wrapping his high school basketball playing career with the 2015-2016 season, Mitchell was an assistant coach on Anthony Smith’s staff during the 2016-2017 campaign.

Former Coupeville boys JV hoops coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh worked with Mitchell for several seasons.

Dante will bring some young energy, that will hold his kids accountable,” Van Velkinburgh said. “During his time as a player, I appreciated how hard he worked and his willingness to do the little things to help his team win.

“And he’s never been one to shy away from hard work.”

Avis Mitchell produces superstars.

Whether she’s working the sidelines as a coach, or raising her own children, the nicest hoops guru I know has a stellar track record.

And today marks one of her greatest accomplishments, the day she delivered twin titans into the world.

Coupeville High School seniors Dante and DeAndre Mitchell, who are a mere seven days away from returning for another run on the hardwood, are celebrating a joint birthday today.

Like a lot of twins, I can’t always tell them apart without basketball uniforms and a roster at my disposal.

Probably because I’m an idiot.

When we’re talking Coupeville twins and being able to tell who’s who, you range from stunningly easy (Joey/Skyy Lippo, for obvious reasons) to fairly easy (Lauren/Kayla Rose) to take a guess (Dante/DeAndre and Jake/Josh Lord) to no-way-in-heck (Ana/Ivy Luvera … four years and I never got it right).

But whether or not I always know which twin I’m looking at, they both score big in many ways.

Talented athletes, certainly, with the kind of free-flowing, air-walking game that big bro Anthony Bergeron brought to Wolf hoops before them.

But, also like Anthony, and like their mama, Dante and DeAndre class the joint up with their presence.

Smart, outgoing, well-liked by teammates, coaches and fans, they should make their mom proud.

As we head into a new hoops season, I hope they get a chance to have a big break-out in their final go-around, just like Anthony did as a Wolf senior.

It would be fitting for a duo who play with passion and a pedal-through-the-metal style.

Happy birthday, Dante and DeAndre, and all the best as you start dropping jumpers, and, perhaps, dunking like your brother.

The future is bright for both of you, and the present ain’t too bad, either.

Hunter Smith

Once they got their sea legs back, they were fine.

After a bit of a rough start in the first half Tuesday (maybe the aftereffects of riding the ferry to Port Townsend), the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad dominated, throwing down 34 second-half points en route to a 48-39 victory.

The win gave the Wolves a three-game season sweep of the Redhawks, while snapping a two-game losing skid.

The CHS young guns are 7-9 overall, 4-3 in Olympic League play with two to go.

When they did lock on to the basket, the Wolves got scoring from up and down their bench, with nine different players putting their name in the scoring column.

Hunter Smith led the way, dropping 13, while Dante Mitchell (10), Gabe Wynn (9) and DeAndre Mitchell (8) all got hot as well.

Brian Shank (2), Joey Lippo (2), Ethan Spark (2), Hunter Downes (1) and Desmond Bell (1) rounded out the offensive attack.

The mighty, mighty Mitchell brothers combined to haul down 18 rebounds and block four shots, while Dante pilfered seven steals to go with his 10 boards.

Shank (six boards, two blocks), Wynn (three boards, two steals), Bell (three boards), Downes (three boards) and Smith (two steals) were also busy.
