Big meet, top performances

Time to run with the big boys (and girls).

The second track and field meet of the season sent Coupeville High School’s squad way down the road Saturday, where the Wolves vied at the 24-team Rainier Icebreaker.

The meet drew schools from numerous classifications, but the Wolves, repping a 2B school, more than held their own.

Coupeville’s boys placed fifth in the team competition, while their female counterparts claimed 14th overall.

Onalaska’s boys and Rainier’s girls came out on top in the point chase.

While Coupeville didn’t claim any individual wins, the Wolves did collect three second-place performances, with two of those being ties among teammates.

Katie Marti was runner-up in the javelin, while Cael Wilson shared second place in the high jump and pole vault with Davin Houston and Axel Marshall, respectively.

Toss in 22 PR’s spread out amongst 19 Wolves, with Isa Mc Fetridge, Liam Blas, and Ari Cunningham notching two apiece to lead the way, and CHS coaches came away pleased.

“Beautiful afternoon, high energy, new faces — team came in hungry for success!” said Bob Martin.

Coupeville returns to action next week with two meets. Up first is a trip off-island Wednesday, Mar. 26 for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet hosted by Mount Vernon Christian.

Downbeat finale, upbeat future

It was a tale of two halves – with one much better than the other.

The Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team brought its season to a close Friday night, falling 51-26 to visiting Friday Harbor in a game which got away from the young Wolves.

CHS, which finishes 4-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-8 overall, played strongly in the first half, but cold shooting after halftime doomed any hopes for the hometown squad.

The Wolves trailed just 10-6 after one quarter of action, with Mahkai Myles rattling the rim for a pair of three-balls to account for all of his team’s scoring.

From there, Friday Harbor edged Coupeville 13-12 in the second frame, before slamming its collective feet through the gas pedal in the third and fourth quarters,

A 15-8 Wolverine run coming out of the halftime break hurt, while a 13-0 romp in the final frame made the game score seem much more lopsided than it had earlier.

Malachi Somes split time between varsity and JV, providing scrappy defense at every level.

Myles and Riley Lawless led CHS with eight points apiece, while Jayden Little (3), Malachi Somes (3), Easton Green (2), and Davin Houston (2) also scored.

Little rippled the nets for his first three-ball of the season to give his point total a little extra spicy flavor.

Kyle McCrimmon, Khanor Jump, Liam Blas, Sage Arends, Carson Grove, and Nathan Coxsey also saw floor time for a young squad which often looked very good this season.

While the finale wasn’t what the Wolves might have hoped for, the future remains bright.

Bronec big, but Tigers too tough

The Wolves got caught in the bounce-back.

Napavine, one of the best varsity boys 2B hoops squads in the state, got stung Saturday in a narrow loss to Adna, as the two schools scrapped for first place in the always-tough Central 2B League.

Monday rolled around, and Coupeville, having made the 152-mile trek off island for a non-conference tilt, found itself in the bullseye.

Outscored 27-7 during a frantic first quarter by the host Tigers, the Wolves rebounded to play three competitive quarters but fell 76-52.

The loss drops Coupeville to 3-10 on the season, and the Wolves now turn to the heart of their own league schedule.

CHS, which sits at 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, visits Darrington Friday to kick off a six-game string of conference games, with prime playoff positioning up for grabs.

On to league play!

While Monday’s first quarter may be something they want to forget, the memory of the next three frames could be a strong inspiration for the Wolves.

Coupeville dug deep to “win” the second (12-11) and fourth (16-14) quarters and got scoring from nine of 11 players.

While Napavine star Karsen Denault topped all players with a game-high 20 points, Wolf big man Hurlee Bronec almost matched him.

The CHS senior, who has been on a bit of an offensive rampage of late, poured in a team-best 19 points, while scoring in every quarter.

Hurlee Bronec topped out with eight points in the third and passed a personal milestone in the game, cracking the 150-point club for his varsity hoops career.

That leaves him hot on the heels of twin brother Hunter, who, for the moment at least, still leads the family scoring race at 158-153.

Chase Anderson rattled the rims for nine points in support of Hurlee Bronec, including netting a pair of second-half three-balls, while Johnny Porter banked in six.

Camden Glover (5), Landon Roberts (4), Jack Porter (4), Hunter Bronec (2), Davin Houston (2), and Malachi Somes (1) also scored, with Easton Green and Carson Field rounding out the rotation in the road game.

Houston’s fourth-quarter bucket was his first as a varsity player, as he becomes the 428th Wolf boy I’ve been able to document scoring in a varsity game between 1917-2025.

Hot finish, cool win

They hadn’t played in nearly three weeks, so they made sure their return was special.

Closing the game on a 7-0 run, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad roared from behind on the road Tuesday, upending host Friday Harbor 34-31.

The victory, coming in the Wolves first contest since Dec. 20, lifts the CHS young guns to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-4 overall.

Tuesday’s clash was a tense back-and-forth affair, and it looked like Friday Harbor was going to pull out the win when it went ahead 31-27 late in the fourth quarter.

But Coupeville, which got points from five different players in the final frame, responded with lock-down defense and some big buckets at the end.

Mahkai Myles and Malachi Somes got the Wolves back to a tie, before freshman Liam Blas and sophomore Davin Houston combined to slam the door shut on the Wolverines.

Blas, working aggressively in the paint, ripped down an offensive rebound with the game knotted at 31-31 and fed Houston for what turned into the game-winning jumper.

Then, after forcing a turnover, the Wolves played keep-away with the ball, before Blas got crunched and sent to the free throw line with only a handful of ticks left on the clock.

The fab frosh arced in one of two to ensure Friday Harbor would have to net a three-ball to force overtime, but the Wolverines never got that final shot off, instead throwing the ball away on the game’s final play.

Riley Lawless led a balanced Wolf offense, banging away for a team-high nine points in the win, while Houston finished with six.

Somes (4), Myles (4), Carson Grove (3), Blas (3), Easton Green (2), Sage Arends (2), and Khanor Jump (1) also scored, with Nathan Coxsey and Kyle McCrimmon also seeing floor time.

It was the first high school point for Jump, another hard-playing freshman.

Pop your shot, make your mark

Putting the ball in the hoop is the name of the game.

Strong defense sets you up to win, but you still have to score more points than the other team.

Plus, scoring is the easiest stat to track, which is why you so rarely see an article devoted to say, the leaders at taking charges.

So, as we head towards the final games of 2024, which will come this weekend in Eastern Washington for the Coupeville High School varsity hoops teams, a look at season-to-date scoring stats for all the Wolves.
