Coupeville High School volleyball fans came out for the season opener attired in prairie outfits as the Wolves waged an epic battle with visiting South Whidbey.

Scrappy Wolves pounce on Braves

Road, sweet, road.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad has played some of its best games away from its own gym this season, and Wednesday night was a prime example.

Leading from start to finish, Kassie O’Neil’s band of road warriors held off host La Conner, claiming a solid 28-22 win.

The victory lifts Coupeville’s young guns to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5 overall, heading into another road tussle Friday against Mount Vernon Christian.

Wednesday’s rumble in La Conner was close for a quarter, with the Wolves clinging to a 4-3 lead after a defensive-minded opening eight minutes.

But then O’Neil turned Madison McMillan loose, and CHS made its move.

The Wolf sophomore knocked down seven of her game-high nine points in the second frame, with Teagan Calkins and Bryley Gilbert chipping in as Coupeville busted things open with a 10-5 run.

Up 14-8 heading into the second half, the Wolves pushed their advantage out to 20-11 by the end of the third, then held on as La Conner rallied late.

McMillan’s nine-point effort led a well-balanced offensive attack, with Desi Ramirez-Vasquez going off for all eight of her points after halftime.

Kierra Thayer banked in four points in support of the duo, with Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo (2), Jada Heaton (2), Calkins (2), and Gilbert (1) rounding out the scorers.

Reese Wilkinson, Brynn Parker, Kayla Arnold, Kassidy Upchurch, Skylar Parker, and Liza Zustiak also saw floor time for the Wolves, who won for the third time on the road this season.

“Proud of my girls!”

She’s a winner at every level.

During her playing days, Kassie O’Neil dropped daggers on the hardwood, making rival teams cry and sparking Coupeville High School girls’ basketball teams to big victories.

Now that she’s moved to the bench, nothing has changed.

Making her debut as the Wolf JV girls coach Wednesday, O’Neil provided the game plan and her pack of hoops assassins responded, drilling host South Whidbey 27-21 in the season opener for both teams.

Bringing out a who’s-who of fans, including lil’ sis Katie Smith, a Wolf hoops legend in her own right, Killer Kassie will file this one away in her drawer of great memories.

“Definitely still riding on that winning high,” O’Neil said while basking in the afterglow.

“Proud of my girls.”

Coupeville opened strong and closed strong, turning a 7-2 lead after one quarter into a 15-8 advantage at the half.

While the Falcons put together a mini run in the third quarter, slicing their deficit to 18-13, the Wolves were too much for South Whidbey to handle down the stretch.

O’Neil got floor time for 11 players, with seven Wolves making the nets pop.

Desi Ramirez-Vasquez paced CHS with seven points, while Jada Heaton and Kierra Thayer backed her up with five apiece.

Coupeville’s attack was rounded out by solid scoring work from Madison McMillan (4), Teagan Calkins (3), Bryley Gilbert (2), and Skylar Parker (1).

Kassidy Upchurch, Kayla Arnold, Liza Zustiak, and Reese Wilkinson also saw floor time for the Wolves, who return to action this Saturday with a home game against Lakewood.

Tipoff time for the JV girls is 7:00 PM.

Wolf JV girls crush rivals

They unleashed the big guns.

With eight different players notching a bucket Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team ran visiting Friday Harbor right off the floor.

Holding the visitors scoreless in the second half, the Wolves claimed a resounding 37-6 win on a night when their varsity counterparts were sidelined by Covid protocols.

The victory lifts the JV squad to 2-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-5 overall.

Coupeville came out hot and never looked back, building an 11-4 lead by the first break.

Desi Ramirez-Vasquez had the hot hand in the opening frame, dropping in six points, while Gwen Gustafson, Brooklyn Thayer, and Madison McMillan chipped in to help fuel the offensive explosion.

CHS stretched the margin to 20-6 by the half, then went into relentless lock-down mode after the break.

Friday Harbor couldn’t hit a bucket from anywhere in the second half, as the Wolves closed the game on a 17-0 tear.

Ramirez-Vasquez paced Coupeville, banking in a game-high 10 points to outscore Friday Harbor by herself.

She had plenty of help, however, with McMillan and Gustafson going off for seven points apiece.

Katie Marti (4), Thayer (3), Jada Heaton (2), Reese Wilkinson (2), and Mia Farris (2) also scored, with Edie Bittner, Kayla Arnold, and Skylar Parker chipping in on the defensive end for Greg Turcott’s team.
