Rung by rung, we climb the ladder.

Fresh off a 48-6 drubbing of 2A Bellingham, the Coupeville High School football team jumps from #7 to #6 in the latest 2B overview from Evans Rankings.

Stats hound Matt Evans feeds his data into Newman, a diabolical computer likely bent on world domination, and it spits out its opinion every week.

After making a debut at #10 two weeks ago, the Wolves, who are 5-1, have climbed each week.

Coupeville’s next-door neighbor, 1A South Whidbey — the only team the Wolves have lost to this season — are ranked #8 among 1A schools.

And how does this compare to the RPI rankings compiled by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, which are “official?”

The WIAA has Coupeville at #8 in 2B and South Whidbey at #7 in 1A.

Personally, I prefer Newman, my favorite computer overlord.

Movin’ on up.

Coming off of a 35-3 dismantling of league rival Friday Harbor, the Coupeville High School football squad jumps three rungs in the latest computer rankings.

Newman, the often-diabolical computer employed by stats hound Matt Evans on his site, Evans Rankings, has bumped the Wolves from #10 among 2B schools to #7.

Coupeville is a perfect 2-0 against fellow 2B schools this season, with wins over La Conner and Friday Harbor, while going 2-1 against 1A competition.

The Wolves beat Klahowya and Sultan, with their lone defeat coming to South Whidbey, which is 5-0 and also ranked #7 in its classification by Newman.

Next up for CHS is a home non-conference game Thursday against 2A Bellingham, which sits at 2-3 on the season.

Our computer overlords are a benevolent bunch.

At least this week.

We still need to keep an eye on Skynet, but Newman, the system employed by noted numbers cruncher Matthew Evans, likes Coupeville at the moment.

The latest tally released by Evans Rankings has Wolf football in the top 10 for the first time this season.

Sporting a record of 3-1 heading towards a Homecoming showdown with Friday Harbor, Bennett Richter’s 2B squad has wins over 1A schools Klahowya and Sultan to its credit.

The only loss on the record came to another 1A school, South Whidbey, which is 4-0 and ranked #4 in its classification by Newman.

The work of Evans Rankings doesn’t officially impact the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and its own RPI rankings, but it should, as the former often turns out to be much more realistic than the latter.

All hail our computer overlords! Now get back to practice.

Well, we get some respect, just not all the respect.

Despite being the only unbeaten 2B boys team left in the state, Coupeville High School has yet to top any of the state-wide rankings this season.

But the Wolves, now 13-0 after road wins at Mount Vernon Christian and Granite Falls this past week, have bumped back up.

So, it’s a start.

Evans Rankings, which uses “an unbiased ranking system using a formula of my creation,” according to well-respected writer/numbers cruncher Matt Evans, has the CHS boys #6 as of Sunday night.

Coupeville trails Kalama (12-1), Chief Leschi (13-1), Ilwaco (14-1), Okanogan (16-2), and Napavine (13-2), but does rise four slots from last week, when they were tabbed at #10.

Meanwhile, the Wolves also sit at #6 in the RPI rankings posted by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, trailing the same five schools, just in a slightly different order.

The WIAA goes Kalama, Ilwaco, Okanogan, Chief Leschi, and Napavine currently.

While there is a lot of (often well-deserved) carping about the WIAA’s system, that’s the one which directly affects where and who Coupeville would play if it advances to the state tourney.

Meanwhile, new “Top 10 power rankings” from SB Live should be out in the next day or two.

In the last one, posted on Jan. 25, Okanogan was #1 in 2B, and Coupeville was on the outside looking in, considered one of “the next three teams up.”

Finally, there’s last week’s Associated Press poll, where pampered Seattle and Tacoma newspaper people sit around eating caviar and bonbons while ignoring the outer kingdoms.

I kid, I kid.

With the newspaper industry crashing to Earth like the Hindenburg, it’s more like a dented bottle of off-brand bottled water and an out-of-date pack of Ho Ho’s, am I right?

Honestly, it’s not surprising the Wolves get no love (or a single vote) from the AP, as the Coupeville boys haven’t been to the state tourney since 1988.

That means most voters haven’t seen CHS play in years and have no base of reference to draw from.

Out of sight, completely out of mind.

A few years back Makana Stone averaged 20+ points and 20+ rebounds a night while leading the Coupeville girls to a third-straight Olympic League title — a stretch where no conference rival came within single digits of the Wolves.

Local voters handed her another unanimous league MVP, but, when AP voters tabbed All-State teams, they ignored Kana.

Instead, they voted in favor of a girl from Klahowya who wasn’t the first option on a team which finished at the bottom of the league.

Why did they do that?

Because the Klahowya girl was one of the best soccer players in the state, the anchor of a state-title winning team.

AP voters mindlessly voted for a name they recognized, exposed an epic blind spot, then went back to hustling to keep their industry from vanishing from the face of the Earth.

And thus it has ever been so.

The Wolf bench watches Coupeville’s seventh-straight win unfold.

One big win, one slight slip in the rankings.

The Coupeville High School varsity boys basketball team only got on the floor once last week, but it resulted in a 65-48 thunking of Mount Vernon Christian in a first-place showdown.

As big as that victory was for the Wolves, it wasn’t enough for them to hold on to their #3 ranking among 2B schools when Evans Rankings released its latest numbers Monday.

Chief Leschi (8-0) remained at #1, but the rest of the top five shuffled.

Kalama (9-1) bounced from #5 to #2, Okanogan (12-1) bumped from #4 to #3, Coupeville (7-0) slipped from #3 to #4, and Ilwaco (10-0) plunged from #2 to #5.

What does it all mean?

Ultimately, not everything, as the Evans Rankings numbers don’t impact postseason seeding like the RPI numbers tallied by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will.

But, the rankings, the work of noted numbers cruncher Matthew Evans, are fun to follow.

Coupeville’s boys have gone from #6 to #4 to #3, then back to #4 this season.

The other two 2B schools in the Northwest 2B/1B League, La Conner and Friday Harbor, hold down #35 and #43, respectively.

Among 1B schools, MVC’s boys are #15, with Orcas Island (#24), Darrington (#29), and Concrete (#50) trailing behind.

Meanwhile, the Wolf girls, who fell to MVC, sit at #25, down one slot from a week ago.

La Conner, which suffered its first loss in 12 games when a three-ball rimmed out at the buzzer in a showdown with 4A Eastlake, is #5, while Friday Harbor’s girls are #48.

The MVC girls (9-2), who were savaged 66-13 by La Conner earlier this season, are #1 among 1B schools, with Darrington (#35), Orcas Island (#38), and Concrete (#44) rounding out NWL teams.
