They came, they ran, they heard the click of cameras.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad hosted its lone home meet of the season Wednesday at Fort Casey State Park, and photographers were hiding in every bush along the trail.

Beautiful day, beautiful meet

These are the days Elizabeth Bitting loves.

The Coupeville High School cross country coach was front and center at Fort Casey State Park Wednesday, as the Wolves hosted their lone home meet of the season.

And Bitting was stoked.

“It was a beautiful day!” she said. “So many spectators, so many cow bells ringing, a lot of hoarse voices, PR’s galore!”

Craig Pedlar, who coached CHS cross country in the ’70s, was the official starter, and seemingly the whole community came out in force to support the harriers.

“We had so many wonderful volunteers!” Bitting said.

“Thank you to all who came out on this glorious day and cheered on ALL THE runners! I LOVE THAT!”

Parents, school admins and teachers, middle school runners and the CHS cheerleaders were on hand to help keep things hopping.

“Today was seriously our biggest turnout yet!” Bitting said. “We had some big names out there! So many family members and friends.

“We definitely were feeling the love today!”

On the 5000-meter course, the Wolves won the girls’ team title, with their 42 points edging out Friday Harbor (46) and Mount Vernon Christian (47).

The CHS boys (32) claimed second, trailing just perpetual state power MVC (23), with Hurricanes Evangeline Fikkert and Isaac Betz earning individual crowns.

Coupeville placed four boys and three girls in the top 10, with junior Aleera Kent and sophomore Kenneth Jacobsen leading the way with fourth-place finishes.

The Wolves get back at it a week from today, Oct. 9, when they travel to Friday Harbor for another league meet.

Run fast, run with joy

They are Wolves, hear them roar.

The Coupeville Middle School girls cross country team defended its home turf Wednesday, winning a seven-team meet at Fort Casey State Park.

Elizabeth Bitting’s pack of gung-ho runners held off traditional powerhouses King’s and South Whidbey to claim the team title, placing three harriers in the top 10.

The Wolf boys finished third, with King’s on top of the leaderboard.

Granite Falls, Northshore Christian Academy, Sultan, and Lakewood rounded out the field, with 161 runners hitting the finish line during the 1.5-mile race.

Wednesday’s rumble in the woods was a preview of the season finale, as the same seven teams travel to South Whidbey Tuesday, Oct. 18 for the Cascade League Championships.

Coupeville’s runners wore pink wrist bands to show their support for the fight against breast cancer, and the meet was the first home one for the revived Wolf cross country program.

With Athletic Director Willie Smith off on an annual hunting trip, Bitting got huge help from Aimee Bishop, Barbi Ford, and Bob Martin, among many, and the event was a major success.

“It finally happened!” Bitting said. “The afternoon was beautiful! The sun was out, there was a slight breeze, and the crowds came out to cheer on all runners.

“Each and every one of our runners set a PR for our home course,” she added.

“I am so proud of each and every one of them!!!”

 

Kenneth Jacobsen was the fastest Wolf boy Wednesday afternoon.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad hosted, and competed at, the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Thursday at Fort Casey State Park, attracting fans of all sizes and shapes.

Wolf harriers shine on home trail

Closer and closer.

Mount Vernon Christian’s boys cross country team is still the gold standard in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

But Coupeville is coming up fast in the rearview mirror.

Three days after coming within 11 points of catching the Hurricanes in the team standings at a multi-team meet, the Wolves shaved their deficit down to nine while running Friday at Fort Casey State Park.

MVC had the first three runners across the line, led by Alexander Hoksbergen, but Coupeville slotted in at 4-5-6-7, then added 10-11-12 to stay close.

The final margin of victory for the Hurricanes this time around was 23-32, after winning 25-36 at Orcas three days earlier.

Concrete didn’t have enough runners to score as a team in the boys race, while MVC and Coupeville each had four female runners, not enough to form full teams.

Hurricane junior Maddy Nielsen outdueled Wolf Helen Strelow to claim the girls individual title.

Coupeville gets right back into action Saturday, with a trip to Shoreline for the King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run.
