They’re pushing hard for the finish line, and you can help.

The Coupeville High School Class of 1974 celebrated its 50th reunion recently, and a fundraiser in honor of former teachers Jim and Linda Hosek is booming.

The drive, which is scheduled to wrap up Aug. 31, has raised more than $5,300 so far.

The plan is to issue a $2,000 scholarship honoring the Hoseks to a graduating member of the CHS Class of 2025, with the remaining money being dispersed by the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools through its Promise Fund.

Jim and Linda Hosek

“The response has been humbling,” said Jennifer (Toth) Henning, a ’74 grad who has helped spearhead the fundraiser. “We want to finish strong.”

The Hoseks, who taught and coached for many years in the local community, both at Coupeville High School and Skagit Valley College, were hugely influential on their students.

Get some new artwork for your frig while supporting the shelter animals of Whidbey.

The Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation (WAIF) is holding a “Poorly Drawn Pets” fundraiser through the end of August, and you can be part of it.

Submit a pic of your pooch or kitty (or sassy iguana, I suppose), donate $25 to help the cause, and you’ll get a rendering to treasure.

The online fundraiser runs through Aug. 30.

Portraits will be delivered by email, with hard copies available to be picked up in person at WAIF’s Coupeville shelter.

Aleera Kent, seen here during the high school track and field season, was one of 273 runners to participate in this year’s Race the Reserve. (Parker Hammons photo)

Numbers stayed consistent.

The 2024 edition of Race the Reserve featured 273 runners rambling across the prairie Saturday, slightly down from last year’s 277.

The 5K and 10K attracted 100 and 91 runners, respectively, while the half marathon, with 82 competitors, was up 11 from a year ago.

Jarrett Manca won the premier event, hitting the finish line in one hour, 28 minutes, 46.87 seconds, while Cataldo DiDonna (35:49.62) and Galina Free (20:36.45) finished first in the shorter races.

Race the Reserve is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Coupeville High School’s senior class, with proceeds going to fund graduation night festivities.

CHS cross country ace Aleksia Jump shares a moment with her fan club president.

The prairie was abuzz with the sound of runners slicing through early morning fog, and cash hitting the bank account.

Saturday brought another edition of Race the Reserve — the biggest fundraiser for Coupeville’s senior class — to life, with the pics above and below showcasing a taste of what went down.

The pics come to us from a wide array of Wolf Moms, always doing my work for me and being greatly appreciated for it.

This is your time to join the movement.

Parents of students in the Coupeville High School Class of 2025 are ramping up for next month’s Race the Reserve and are looking for sponsors and people willing to donate for goodie bags.

The event, set for August 10, is the biggest fundraiser for each year’s graduating class.

Organizers are planning 300 goodie bags and are looking for a wide variety of things.

“Goodie bag items can be coupons, advertisements, lip balm, sunscreen, granola bars, anything really,” said Wolf Mom Christi Messner.

Donations need to be made by Aug. 5.

You can also sponsor the race, and the deadline for that is much closer, arriving this coming Wednesday, July 24.

For all the info on that, pop over to:
