Get that sweet, sweet WIAA cash!

Don’t leave money sitting on the table.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is offering three $5,000 scholarships and 12 $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors.

The Smart Choices Scholarship Program, which honors Class of 2024 students for athletics/activities, leadership, academics, and community service, is funded by Gesa Credit Union, the Dairy Farmers of Washington, and Les Schwab Tires.

Applications are due by Mar. 15, 2024.

To be eligible, you need to be a full-time student in grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

If you receive a scholarship, you have to enroll as a full-time student at a college, university, community college, trade or vocational school for the 2024 fall semester.

The winners will be determined based on the following formula:

Athletic/Activity Excellence (30%)
Academic Achievement (30%)
Leadership (20%)
Citizenship/Community Service (10%)
Essay Originality/Creativity (5%)
Financial Need (5%)

She zips, they bow down

“The Franchise” is in awards-winning mode.

Coupeville High School sophomore Lyla Stuurmans was honored Thursday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, named as an Athlete of the Week winner.

Each week during the school year, the WIAA and Gesa Credit Union hail a male and female athlete from each classification (4A-1B) in the state.

Stuurmans, who competes for the 2B Wolves, was honored for her performance at last weekend’s District 1/2 Track and Field Championships in Coupeville.

Running wild on her home oval, the oldest of Scott and Sarah’s four children claimed three titles and will advance to the state meet in all of them.

Lyla won the 400 and 800, then ran the anchor leg on a triumphant 4 x 400 relay squad.

A three-sport star who also plays volleyball (school and club) and has been a varsity basketball starter since she was in 8th grade, Stuurmans has won 15 times this track season, spread across four events.

Fast feet, big brains

Our cross country runners are smarter than your cross country runners.

Coupeville High School’s female harriers qualified as a team for this Saturday’s state meet, and while the Wolves are in Pasco, they’ll receive an extra honor.

That’s because CHS girls’ cross country is an academic state champion, with its runners combining for the best GPA among all 2B schools participating in the sport.

The Wolf team, which includes Helen Strelow, Claire Mayne, Noelle Western, Reagan Callahan, and Erica and Cristine McGrath, compiled a 3.969 GPA.

Coupeville is coached by Paige Spangler.

The state champion honor is bestowed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and Gesa Credit Union.

CHS will receive a plaque at the state meet, with runners each earning a special patch and medallion.

Other 2B schools honored for fall sports include Okanogan (boys’ cross country and girls’ soccer), Saint Georges (boys’ soccer), Liberty (football), and Asotin (volleyball).

There’s $27,000 in scholarships on the table, and some of it could come to Coupeville.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is accepting applications through April 1 for its annual Smart Choices Scholarship Program.

There are three $5,000 scholarships, and a flurry of $1,000 bonuses available to students in the Class of 2022.

The program is funded by Gesa Credit Union, the Dairy Farmers of Washington, and Les Schwab Tires.

Excellence in athletics/activities, academics, leadership, and community service are considered by judges.

To be eligible, students must be a senior, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and be enrolled as a full-time student in a WIAA member high school such as Coupeville.

If you receive a scholarship, you have to graduate at the end of the 2021-22 school year, and enroll as a full-time student at a college, university, community college, trade or vocational school for the 2022 fall semester.

There’s money to be made.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has opened the application process for its 2021 Smart Choices Scholarship Program.

Working together with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Gesa Credit Union, the WIAA will award two $5,000 scholarships, and eight $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors.

Deadline for applications is April 1.

The scholarships honor excellence in athletics/activities, academics, leadership and community service throughout the students high school careers.

Judging is based on:
