Wolf girls assault the net

Ayden Wyman got historical, and the Wolves got dangerous.

Raining down goals on host La Conner Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad romped to a 6-0 win.

The victory lifts CHS to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-7 overall and pulls it out of the conference basement.

Coupeville sits in third place among the four NWL schools to play girls soccer, a half-game up on La Conner (0-3, 0-10).

Mount Vernon Christian (4-0, 7-4), who the Wolves play Thursday, have clinched the league title, while Friday Harbor (3-2, 6-5-1) is in second.

Coupeville’s goal explosion Tuesday — which produced its largest single-game scoring total of the season — came from three players.

Wynter Arndt notched her first high school goal, joining graduated older sister Knight on the CHS soccer all-time scoring list, while fellow senior Carolyn Lhamon punched in two scores.

That gives Lhamon three tallies on the season, six for her prep career.

But the biggest contribution belonged to sophomore sensation Ayden Wyman, who continues to baffle rival goaltenders.

With three more goals Tuesday, she has a team-best seven for her second high school campaign, and 11 for her career.

Wyman is the sixth Wolf girl to break double digits, trailing just Mia Littlejohn (35 goals), Kalia Littlejohn (33), Genna Wright (20), Lindsey Roberts (17), and Avalon Renninger (12).

Coupeville’s goals Tuesday were set up by solid teamwork, with Gwen Crowder, Anna Myles, and Arndt picking up assists.

“Nice to get a solid win,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson as he marinated in the moment.

Wolves tangle with pitch powerhouse

It was a tall challenge.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer squad is a scrappy band of players who never back down from anyone.

But, when the opponent is a blue blood program which boasts multiple state titles and enters play undefeated, life is likely to be tough.

Such was the case Saturday, as the Wolves put out a maximum effort but came up short against visiting Crosspoint Academy.

The Warriors, repping a 1B school, exited Whidbey with a 7-0 win, improving their season mark to 5-0-1, with that tie having come against 2A power North Kitsap.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-7, though their next game should be a more-competitive affair.

The Wolves travel to La Conner Tuesday, Oct. 11 to face a Braves team which sits at 0-8 on the season.

Coupeville has home and away games with La Conner, as well as road trips to Mount Vernon Christian and Granite Falls left on the schedule.

The Wolves may also pick up a road game at Sultan, if the two schools are able to work around the Turks league schedule, which has been impacted by fire-related weather conditions.

Booters earn an “A” for effort

Playoffs? We’re probably not talking about the playoffs.

Despite putting up a strong defensive effort Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team fell 4-2 to visiting Friday Harbor.

The loss drops the Wolves to 0-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-6 overall.

While Coupeville has plenty still to play for, and a somewhat-easier schedule the rest of the way, Tuesday’s loss all but eliminates it from postseason contention.

Only two NWL girls’ teams make the playoffs, and Mount Vernon Christian (2-0 in conference action) is a state title contender with few weak spots.

Tuesday’s win lifts Friday Harbor to 3-1 in league play and gives it a season sweep of Coupeville.

Even if everything breaks right for the Wolves — sweeping two games from winless La Conner, then pulling off a major upset of MVC, a team they fell 10-0 to earlier this season — the best they can finish is 3-3 in league play.

Friday Harbor can be no worse than 3-3, and owns the tiebreaker, while it would be mindboggling if MVC tumbled from the top spot.

But even without a path to the playoffs, Coupeville has five games left to play — or maybe six, if Sultan is rescheduled — and stacks up well with most of those foes.

Play with the same intensity they brought to the pitch Tuesday, and the Wolves will claim more victories as the season winds down.

CHS struck first in its rumble with Friday Harbor, thanks to a window-rattling free kick off of the foot of Carolyn Lhamon in the 10th minute.

The senior captain curled her shot over a wall of Wolverine players, the ball splashing home in the top left corner of the net.

It was Lhamon’s first goal of the season, and the fourth of her stellar prep career.

Friday Harbor answered right back, though, banging home two scores in a five-minute span.

McKenna Clark tied the game up with a blast from the left side, before freshman Stella Carli alertly knocked in a rebound off of a missed shot which bounced back right to her foot.

While those shots got in, Wolf goaltender Anna Myles was superb in the net, blocking several close-range shots, punching balls away to allow her team a chance to rally.

“Anna played her heart out,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “She really did her best to keep us in the game.”

Coupeville forced the game’s second tie in the game’s 18th minute, when Ayden Wyman converted on a penalty kick.

Tripped up and taken down hard as she made a run, the Coupeville sophomore collected her thoughts, then lashed home her team-high fourth score of the year.

That gives Wyman eight goals through 1.5 seasons, tying her with Sophie Martin and Sage Renninger for #6 on the all-time CHS girls scoring chart.

While the teams combined to rattle home four scores in the first 18 minutes, they then went 49 minutes before either team found the back of the net again.

The ultimate tiebreaker came from Stella Carli, slapping in a shot after being awarded a penalty kick after what seemed like a fairly standard rumble in front of the net.

Friday Harbor tacked on an insurance goal with under three minutes to play, with Ava Martin nimbly hauling in a deflection before flicking in a chip shot.

Myles, who twice went to the pitch hard and ended the game limping, stood tall in the net to the end, coming up with several crowd-pleasing saves even as the final seconds ticked away.

Her play, and that of defenders Nezi Keiper, Sophia Broderick, Edie Bittner, Jackie Contreras, and the battlin’ Parker sisters, Skylar and Brynn, deserve a round of applause.

A new photo star emerges.

Chloe Marzocca joins a strong group of Coupeville High School yearbook students working the sidelines at games this fall.

And now her photographic work, along with that of Helen Strelow, Brenn Sugatan, Bailey Thule, and Delanie Lewis, graces the digital pages of Coupeville Sports.

Marzocca, who balances her shooting schedule with her time as part of the CHS volleyball squad, shot the pics above and below at the most recent Wolf girls soccer game.

“We never stopped”

“We never stopped. The girls brought strong effort from start to finish.”

That was the primary positive note Coupeville High School girls soccer coach Kyle Nelson carried away Tuesday night.

Yes, a very-strong Mount Vernon Christian squad drilled the Wolves 10-0 at Mickey Clark Field, but the undermanned Wolves never stopped fighting.

Coupeville was missing leading scorer Ayden Wyman, who was ill, but the Hurricanes, who have ruled the Northwest 2B/1B League pitch, would have been tough to topple even with a full roster.

MVC scores quickly — it rattled home the night’s first goal just 33 seconds into play Tuesday — and it scores a lot.

The Hurricanes, who have built a strong program in the past couple of seasons, have multiple weapons, and all of them were firing during their visit to Whidbey Island.

Coupeville’s defense, anchored by seniors Nezi Keiper and Carolyn Lhamon, fought valiantly, charging into the fray time and again.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, MVC kept them under constant pressure, peppering the net with a never-ending hail of shots.

Seven balls found the back of the net in the first half, with three more Hurricane scores tacked on in the game’s final 40 minutes.

Nelson praised his team for not wavering while down 7-0, but instead closing with some of their strongest play of the night.

“We were a little better in the second half,” he said. “The girls made adjustments and finished with conviction.”

The loss drops Coupeville to 0-2 in league play, 1-5 overall, with a crucial game coming up on the schedule next week.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor — a team it narrowly lost to in the season opener — Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Four of the seven Northwest 2B/1B League schools play girls soccer, and two teams make the playoffs.

MVC is the frontrunner right now, La Conner the cellar dweller, and the battle between Coupeville and Friday Harbor will likely go a long way towards determining the league’s #2 seed.
