Playoff fever roars to life

The postseason is almost upon us.

The goal is to make it to the state championships, but first Coupeville High School spring sports athletes have to make it past districts.

Wolf baseball and track and field throw down this Saturday, May 13, while girls’ tennis players vie to punch their state ticket May 19.

Softball is the only CHS program not to have a shot at making the big dance, having been eliminated in the regular season league finale.

The outlook for Coupeville teams, and players, still in contention:

BASEBALL:

Where:

Lakewood High School (Arlington) — 17023 11th Ave NE

What:

Northwest Christian of Lacey (7-7) plays Friday Harbor (8-8) at noon in a loser-out game.

Winner returns to the field at 2:00 PM to face Coupeville (15-5) in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.

Where:

Amy Yee Tennis Center (Seattle) — 2000 Martin Luther King Junior Way S.

What:

Coupeville, Friday Harbor, and Three Rivers Christian (Longview) each send two singles players and two doubles teams.

Top two seeds receive first round bye, and tourney is single elimination.

Play begins at 9:30 AM.

One singles player and one doubles team advance to state championships.

TRACK AND FIELD:

When:

Saturday, May 13

Where:

Mickey Clark Field in Coupeville (6 S. Main Street – behind Coupeville Elementary)

What:

One location, two meets, with 2B vs. 2B and 1B vs. 1B.

Nine 1B schools and four 2B schools — Coupeville, Friday Harbor, La Conner, and Northwest Christian (Lacey) — compete.

For 2B athletes, top finisher in each event Saturday advances to state.

If you don’t win a title, you can also punch your ticket if you hit pre-set state meet qualifying times or throwing distances during the district meet.

Wolves, Bulldogs rumble on court

It wasn’t really about the win or loss.

Tuesday’s girls’ tennis match between Coupeville High School and host Mount Vernon was added to the schedule at the very last second, thanks to two athletic directors scrambling.

A matchup between one of the biggest 3A schools in the state and a lil’ 2B institution of learning went about as expected, with the Bulldogs winning 6-0.

But it was the side benefits which mattered most.

Mount Vernon, after having its Senior Night cancelled, was able to bounce back and honor its 12th graders.

And for Coupeville, which wraps the regular season Friday at home against Friday Harbor, then heads to the postseason, it gave the Wolf netters a chance to fine tune their games against stiff competition.

“The good opponents will help the top kids (headed to districts),” said CHS coach Ken Stange.

Friday’s home match is Senior Night for the Wolves, with on-court action slated to kick off at 4:00 PM.

Festivities to honor Lucy Tenore, Karyme Castro, Vivian Farris, Helen Strelow, and Hayley Fiedler will go down about 15 minutes before the match.

2nd Singles — Djina Radenovic lost to Grace Dilworth 6-1, 6-1

3rd Singles — Kaitlyn Leavell lost to Audrey Bylund 6-1, 6-1

1st Doubles — Hayley Fiedler/Vivian Farris lost to Samantha Stewart/Farah Briseno 6-1, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Skylar Parker/Lucy Tenore lost to Sophia Grechishkin/Kira Wilson 6-1, 6-2

Action heats up, standings settle

Djina Radenovic and Wolf tennis play twice as the regular season wraps.

A little something for everyone.

The week ahead is a hodgepodge of regular season and playoff action, with all four Coupeville High School spring sports teams involved.

Wolf softball and girls’ tennis wrap regular season action, while track and field and baseball begin what they hope will be long postseason runs.

The netters travel to Mount Vernon Tuesday, May 9 in a match just added to the schedule, then host Friday Harbor May 12.

That second bout, where the Wolves will celebrate Senior Night, offers CHS a chance to claim sole possession of the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

After that, Ken Stange’s squad sends its top players on to the district tourney, which is set to go down in Seattle May 19.

The CHS softball squad, meanwhile, travels to South Whidbey May 12 for a final non-league game, then packs up the equipment.

The Wolf sluggers were nipped by Friday Harbor in the league finale and lost a chance to advance to the playoffs.

Baseball and track get their postseason closeup Saturday, May 13, with the hardball squad on the road at Lakewood High School, where they will face either Northwest Christian (Lacey) or Friday Harbor.

The Wolf runners, throwers, and jumpers defend their home turf, with CHS hosting the district meet.

Do well, and the state championships are next on the schedule for both teams.

Netters hit a bump in the road

This happens once every decade or so.

Keeping alive its chances at claiming a share of the league title, the Friday Harbor High School girls’ tennis team toppled visiting Coupeville 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.

That snaps a 17-match win streak for the Wolves against the Wolverines, dating back to 2014.

CHS is 18-2 against Friday Harbor in the Coupeville Sports era (2012-2023), with its only other loss coming way back on April 21, 2014.

That match was also decided by the thinnest of margins, with the Wolverines pulling out a 3-2 nailbiter.

Tuesday’s loss, which came in Coupeville’s first match in 11 days, drops the Wolves to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 2-5 overall.

Friday Harbor gets to 1-2 in conference action.

The two schools wrap the regular season May 12 back on Whidbey Island, when CHS holds its Senior Night.

Win or lose that day, Coupeville coach Ken Stange will notch his 12th title as girls coach, and 17th at the school since taking over the boys and girls tennis programs in 2005.

But a win in the finale gives the Wolves sole possession of the crown, and momentum heading into the postseason.

Tuesday’s match, because of ferry schedules, was a somewhat-shortened affair, with rivals playing a single pro set instead of the normal best two of three sets format.

Coupeville’s biggest highlight came at #1 singles, where senior Helen Strelow ran her personal record to a crisp 7-0.

New month, new challenges

The calendar turns and things get serious.

The arrival of May marks the start of the stretch run for Coupeville High School spring sports teams, with league titles and possible postseason glory at stake.

Wolf softball, baseball, and girls’ tennis all sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings, while track and field has been dominant, especially on the boy’s side.

The CHS netters, who have clinched at least a tie for the conference crown, can claim sole possession with a win Tuesday at Friday Harbor.

Miss there, and they’ll get another crack May 12, when the Wolverines travel to Whidbey for Coupeville’s Senior Night.

Wolf softball only plays once in the week ahead, but everything hinges on the outcome.

The sluggers travel to Friday Harbor Thursday, and the stakes are simple.

Win, and the Wolves clinch a playoff berth. Lose, and a May 12 non-conference road game at South Whidbey is the season finale.

CHS baseball was supposed to play twice, but non-league rival Sultan bailed on a Monday trip to Whidbey, so the hardball squad will wait until Thursday, joining softball for its island-to-island trek.

Win, lose, or draw, the diamond squad has clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tourney for 2B schools, where they’ll need one victory May 13 to punch a ticket to state.

What is at stake this coming week is the NWL title.

Coupeville is a half-game up on 1B Mount Vernon Christian, with the teams having split their two-game season series.

MVC has games left Tuesday with Concrete and Thursday with Orcas Island as the Hurricanes angle to stay even with the Wolves.

While the first three sports are nearing the end of the regular season, track is the first to step into the postseason, with a trip Wednesday to La Conner for the league championships.

That starts a three-meet run for glory, with districts and state up next.

As we head into a (possibly) dramatic week, a look at current standings for teams which tally wins and losses:
