April fades, standings solidify

Justin Timberlake is warming up his vocal cords.

“It’s gonna be May” in just a few days, but first Coupeville High School sports teams have a couple more April games to play.

Wolf baseball and softball each have three games on the schedule this coming week, with a slightly different setup.

The hardball squad hosts Friday Harbor Tuesday, Apr. 26, travels to South Whidbey Apr. 28, then hosts Orcas Island for Senior Night Apr. 29.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball sluggers remain at home, with Friday Harbor visiting Apr. 26.

Orcas arrives Apr. 29, and while it’s also Senior Night, softball plans to play a doubleheader.

The schedule is lighter for Coupeville girls tennis and track, which both have one competition on the schedule.

The Wolf netters kick off the week, hosting Friday Harbor Apr. 25, while the runners, jumpers, and throwers cap things with a trip to Lakewood Apr. 30.

That Saturday event is a shindig known as the Sunny & 70’s Invite.

As we mentally prep for the final week of April, and the onslaught of May, a look at standings through games of Apr. 23:

Another week in the books.

As we pass the midpoint of April, Coupeville High School spring sports teams continue to excel.

Wolf softball and girls tennis teams are on target for conference titles, while baseball is just a game out of first place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

Meanwhile, CHS track and field athletes continue to throw down top times and distances while hanging out around the oval.

The week ahead gives everyone but the netters a chance to clash with rivals, with softball leading the pack with three contests.

The Wolf sluggers carry a nine-game winning streak into action, with three non-conference tilts against bigger schools.

Coupeville hosts 1A Meridan Wednesday, Apr. 20, travels to 3A Oak Harbor two days later, then caps things Apr. 23 with a home game against 2A Lakewood.

Wolf baseball hosts Concrete for a doubleheader Apr. 19, before travelling to Mount Vernon Christian Apr. 22.

Finally, CHS track is in action on the road, first in Oak Harbor Apr. 20, then at the Eason Invitational in Snohomish Apr. 23.

The day was action-packed.

Multiple Coupeville High School spring sports teams were in action at home Wednesday, with wanderin’ photo clicker John Fisken bouncing from locale to locale.

CHS tennis schedule shuffles

The work of the high school sports scheduler is never done.

Especially in the spring, when weather and other issues frequently mess with the best laid plans.

Such is the case for the Coupeville girls tennis squad, which once again sees its schedule shifting.

A trip to South Whidbey this coming Monday, Apr. 18 has been bumped nearly a month out due to a conflict with a Falcon league match.

Meanwhile, a previously rained-out tilt with that same South Whidbey team, only with this match in Coupeville, has been rescheduled.

The new remaining schedule, knock on wood:

Monday, Apr. 25 — Friday Harbor (3:30)

Tuesday, May 3 — South Whidbey (3:30) — SENIOR NIGHT

Wednesday, May 11 — @ South Whidbey (3:30)

Wolf netters bounce Island rivals

Sophia Milasich also came up a winner against Oak Harbor.

Still undefeated.

Shuffling the roster a bit, the Coupeville High School varsity girls tennis team took care of business Wednesday, bouncing Oak Harbor’s C-Team 6-2.

The home win lifts the 2B Wolves to a pristine 3-0 on the season, with their biggest test coming up quickly.

That arrives Monday, Apr. 18, when Coupeville travels to South Whidbey to face the always-tough Falcons.

Facing off with 3A Oak Harbor, the Wolves controlled much of the match, with two of their six wins coming thanks to 8-0 bagel jobs.

Of Coupeville’s two losses, the closest was a battle royal where the Wolves fell in a tiebreaker.

8th Doubles — Maylin Steele/Karyme Castro won 8-3
