Wake up, we’ve got things to do

Time to get back at it.

Spring break is in its final hours, and Coupeville High School sports teams are ready to fire back up to full power.

After a very slow week in terms of actual games, once we get to Monday the schedule for next week is crammed.

Between Apr. 8 and 13, there are 14 events spread across five sports, with six of those at home.

Wolf girls tennis, which has played just once this season, leads the way with four scheduled matches, while baseball has a three-game set with South Whidbey.

Toss in four softball games — two varsity tilts at home and two JV clashes on the road — two track meets, and a soccer game, and scores and highlights will be coming in from everywhere.

As you prepare to go from zero to 100 in the blink of an eye, take a moment to catch up on the current league standings.

All quiet on the Wolf front

And now, the slowest week of the season.

With spring break in full bloom, Coupeville High School sports teams will largely be absent from the scene over the next seven days.

Wolf boys soccer has a non-conference game Monday, Apr. 1 at Forks, while baseball is the only CHS team going full tilt.

The diamond men play a three-game series against King’s, with road contests Monday and Friday and a home bout Wednesday.

First pitch is 4 PM.

Meanwhile, CHS tennis, softball and track have the week completely off, save for an occasional practice.

Once we get to a new week, and the calendar rolls around to Monday, Apr. 8, everything will fire back up like normal.

As you detox from constant games, it’s a perfect time to marinate in the up-to-the-moment standings.

Big hits, quick snaps

With hard court action in Coupeville finally kicking off Wednesday, intrepid paparazzi John Fisken spent several hours clicking away, making sure to nab a shot of all 16 Wolves in action.

Spring sports action heats up

Let the battles begin.

Three of the four spring sports which keep win/loss records have started league play, though girls tennis continues to lag behind everyone else.

In fact, the Coupeville High School netters have yet to play a match of any kind, much less a league one, even while baseball, softball and soccer all have played at least five games.

Barring weather shenanigans, Wolf tennis finally gets on the court this coming Wednesday, with a home match against King’s.

While we’ve barely begun to figure out which schools will be crowned league champs, Coupeville is off to a strong start in softball, a decent one in soccer, and will have to make up some ground in baseball.

And if you’re wondering why we haven’t mentioned track and field, where the Wolves are off to a brilliant start, it’s only because they don’t keep track of team win/loss records over at the oval.

Otherwise, rest assured that’s the hottest sport in Cow Town at the moment, especially on the girls side of things, where the Wolves have dominated at their first two meets.

But, back in the world of wins and losses, here’s where things sit through Mar. 24:

Let them play – today, tomorrow, some day

Girls tennis still exists at Coupeville High School.

It might not seem that way recently, as the netters have been largely relegated to the sidelines while other Wolf spring sports programs garner the spotlight.

A rain-out cost CHS tennis an early-season non-conference match, and, by the time they take the court Wednesday, Mar. 27, hosting King’s in the season and league opener, other sports will have a huge head start.

Barring weather issues or other shenanigans, boys soccer will have seven games under their belt, baseball will be playing its seventh game that same day, softball will have six games on the win/loss record, and even track and field will have two meets in the books.

With very few non-league options out there this spring, the Coupeville netters have a pared-down nine-match schedule, facing each of their four North Sound Conference foes — South Whidbey, Friday Harbor, King’s and Granite Falls – twice.

So, the pics above are both a reminder Wolf netters are still hard at work, and that soon, they will get to play someone other than their own teammates.
