And now, the slowest week of the season.

With spring break in full bloom, Coupeville High School sports teams will largely be absent from the scene over the next seven days.

Wolf boys soccer has a non-conference game Monday, Apr. 1 at Forks, while baseball is the only CHS team going full tilt.

The diamond men play a three-game series against King’s, with road contests Monday and Friday and a home bout Wednesday.

First pitch is 4 PM.

Meanwhile, CHS tennis, softball and track have the week completely off, save for an occasional practice.

Once we get to a new week, and the calendar rolls around to Monday, Apr. 8, everything will fire back up like normal.

As you detox from constant games, it’s a perfect time to marinate in the up-to-the-moment standings.

So, here’s where things sit through Mar. 31:

North Sound Conference softball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 2-1 4-5
Granite Falls 2-1 5-4

Wolf hard-court ace Genna Wright gets mid-match wisdom from CHS tennis guru Ken Stange (left) and team manager Drake Borden.

Jillian Mayne sends a screaming forehand the other way.

Avalon Renninger whispers to the ball, “I’m sorry, lil’ buddy, but I’m going to have to hurt you now.”

Eryn Wood prepares to unleash “The Serve of Death ‘n Destruction.”

Tia Wurzrainer snaps another winner cross court.

The sound of tennis balls being whapped always brings the photographers out from hiding.

With hard court action in Coupeville finally kicking off Wednesday, intrepid paparazzi John Fisken spent several hours clicking away, making sure to nab a shot of all 16 Wolves in action.

The pics above are but a small portion of what he shot.

Like this picture, some spring sports standings are in focus, while others are still fuzzy. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Let the battles begin.

Three of the four spring sports which keep win/loss records have started league play, though girls tennis continues to lag behind everyone else.

In fact, the Coupeville High School netters have yet to play a match of any kind, much less a league one, even while baseball, softball and soccer all have played at least five games.

Barring weather shenanigans, Wolf tennis finally gets on the court this coming Wednesday, with a home match against King’s.

While we’ve barely begun to figure out which schools will be crowned league champs, Coupeville is off to a strong start in softball, a decent one in soccer, and will have to make up some ground in baseball.

And if you’re wondering why we haven’t mentioned track and field, where the Wolves are off to a brilliant start, it’s only because they don’t keep track of team win/loss records over at the oval.

Otherwise, rest assured that’s the hottest sport in Cow Town at the moment, especially on the girls side of things, where the Wolves have dominated at their first two meets.

But, back in the world of wins and losses, here’s where things sit through Mar. 24:

North Sound Conference softball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 3-2
Granite Falls 1-0 4-3
Sultan 0-0 0-2
CPC-Bothell 0-1 1-1
South Whidbey 0-1 2-2

North Sound Conference baseball:

School League Overall
CPC-Bothell 3-0 4-1
South Whidbey 3-0 6-0
King’s 0-0 1-4
Sultan 0-0 0-5
Coupeville 0-3 0-5
Granite Falls 0-3 1-5

North Sound Conference girls tennis:

School League Overall
Coupeville 0-0 0-0
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-0
Granite Falls 0-0 1-3
King’s 0-0 1-0
South Whidbey 0-0 0-2

North Sound Conference boys soccer:

School League Overall
King’s 2-0 3-1-1
South Whidbey 1-0 4-0-0
Coupeville 1-1 3-3-0
Sultan 0-1 0-5-0
CPC-Bothell 0-2 0-3-0

CHS tennis ace Mary Milnes loves the sunshine, but she’d also love to get to play a real match. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Avalon Renninger gets limbered up for dropping wicked backhands.

Cecilia Camarena is one of several Wolves ready to make their hard-court debut.

Emily Fiedler is ready to lunge into a new season.

Girls tennis still exists at Coupeville High School.

It might not seem that way recently, as the netters have been largely relegated to the sidelines while other Wolf spring sports programs garner the spotlight.

A rain-out cost CHS tennis an early-season non-conference match, and, by the time they take the court Wednesday, Mar. 27, hosting King’s in the season and league opener, other sports will have a huge head start.

Barring weather issues or other shenanigans, boys soccer will have seven games under their belt, baseball will be playing its seventh game that same day, softball will have six games on the win/loss record, and even track and field will have two meets in the books.

With very few non-league options out there this spring, the Coupeville netters have a pared-down nine-match schedule, facing each of their four North Sound Conference foes — South Whidbey, Friday Harbor, King’s and Granite Falls – twice.

So, the pics above are both a reminder Wolf netters are still hard at work, and that soon, they will get to play someone other than their own teammates.

Hopefully.

Everyone’s moving at their own pace.

Spotty weather and raging illness has disrupted the start of spring sports a bit for everyone, but some teams are taking a harder shot to the kidneys than others.

Coupeville High School softball and boys soccer have already played four games apiece, while baseball is finally getting churning with two contests under its belt.

Meanwhile, girls tennis continues to practice, but has yet to face an opponent wearing a different uniform.

And, while track and field is coming off of its first meet, we exclude them from these weekly league standings stories, as the sport isn’t about compiling team win/loss records.

Next week promises a ton more games, weather and health permitting, and yet the Wolf netters still won’t get on the big board, as their first match, barring any late additions to the schedule, doesn’t go down until Mar. 28.

Until then, they, and the rest of us, can spend a few moments marinating in the standings through Mar. 17:
