“My plan, God willing, is to live long enough to see my children grow up and have families of their own.”

I don’t know Heather Ausman personally, but I do know cancer.

My aunt Loni (who, was in many ways, a fairly ornery lady) had a doctor tell her family that, if they had a priest, they should call him in because she had hours left.

She then sat up and slapped the doctor (or so the legend goes) and fought the ravages of cancer for another 25+ years.

They weren’t always easy years, but, as I said, she was ornery and didn’t go out easily.

Ausman, a Coupeville mother of three young girls, is in her third battle with stage four breast cancer.

I hope that, deep down, she is as ornery as my aunt, and lives to fight on for many years.

We as a community, as a family bound together by our claiming of Cow Town as our residence, can, and should, do everything possible to help her in that fight.

For her, and for her girls.

Ausman has set up a GoFundMe account, and the link to that is below. Anything you can part with will help her family to deal with what are overwhelming medical costs.

Also, two Coupeville businesses — Brett’s Bread and Whidbey Isle Yarns, Gifts and Teas — have issued a challenge to other businesses in town to donate 10% of their Saturday, Jan. 24 sales to help Ausman.

Haley Sherman and Dylan Canell.

Haley Sherman and Dylan Canell.

One of Coupeville’s finest and her family could use our help right now.

Haley Sherman, a really wonderful young woman who graduated from CHS this spring after being a standout volleyball and softball player, lost her much-loved older brother, Dylan Canell, this week.

As the family deals with the sudden tragedy, Dylan’s uncle, Ryan, has put together a GoFundMe fundraising account to try and help the family pay for the sudden funeral expenses.

Whether you knew Dylan personally from his time on Whidbey or not, he, like his sister, was an important part of this town.

One of his teachers at CHS, Ken Stange, reflected on their time together, which was brief, but memorable:

Dylan, you hated school, but you always showed me great respect.

Your reputation preceded you, before you arrived in my 9th grade English class. I admit that I was worried, but your warmth quickly disarmed me.

You had a certain way about you; no matter the person or situation, you could ease the tension and bring smiles into the room, even if it meant you’d be answering to Mr. Black.

You were a wildcard and I liked that about you.

Nobody ever knew what to expect, but everybody knew you’d make them laugh.

You were literally the person who would give someone the shirt off of your back, as referenced by Kenneth Hopkins.

I also remember you as being the only Coupeville kid who would wear a track jacket without a tee shirt underneath. That ’70s look was priceless!

Like too many, you’ve gone far too early. I wish you love and joy in the afterlife, my friend. You’ll be missed.

Peace.

If you can help a little or a lot, or even just pass the word on, please consider doing so.

The family has also announced there will be a memorial service for Dylan 1 PM Saturday, Dec. 20 at Thomas Family Farms, 9010 Marsh Road in Snohomish. All are welcome.

Mekare Bowen (left) with lil' sis Aria.

Mekare Bowen (left) with lil’ sis Aria.

Mekare Bowen is the most amazing young woman I have ever known.

I’m sorry. There is no argument. That’s it. End of story.

Miss Bowen, who I have seen grow up from a wee little lass causing good-natured havoc at Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso when her mom Dea worked there with me to the bright, confident, super-smart, supremely sweet college freshman she is now, is without peer.

Spend any time around her and you will be witness to greatness.

Whether she was casually writing a 500-page fantasy book as a teen or being a doting caregiver to lil’ sis Aria, Mekare exudes joy, love and friendliness, embracing the world and all in it.

What’s kind of remarkable is that she never changed.

Super-friendly little girl to serene, caring young adult, all done with the ease of a Matthew McConaughey-worthy “Alright, alright, alright.”

No grumpy teen years. No angst. At least not in public.

Her intelligence, her grace, her positive spirit, the radiance that flows from every pore in her body — they all grew and continue to blossom.

And now Mekare, having moved on from her time as a CHS cheerleader, is a freshman at Western Washington University, one with a plan to continue to reach out and help others.

She has been accepted to go to South Africa next summer for two weeks with Reach Out Volunteers. While there, she would help in a building program at an orphanage and in conservation work at a game park.

Which is where we, her many fans, can come in to the picture.

Mekare needs a small financial helping hand, and anyone with any sense should gladly be willing to kick in a few cents (or bucks).

Take a moment to click on the link below, read her words and help a truly wonderful young woman help others. It’s the best thing you could do today.
