Well, they’re consistent.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad wrapped up fall ball play Sunday with exactly the same result they obtained the three previous times they played this season — grabbing a two-game split.

The 1A Wolves held off feisty 2A Granite Falls 30-26 in their opener, then fell 43-13 to Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey, British Columbia.

Canada’s team hails from a high school of 2,081 students, which would make it the biggest 4A school in Washington state (if it magically transported itself overnight to the USA).

Too many Wolf turnovers and too much height on Lord Tweedsmuir’s side of the court doomed Coupeville in the nightcap.

Kailey Kellner went down scrapping, snatching 10 boards against the Canucks, while Mikayla Elfrank pilfered three steals.

Mia Littlejohn kick-started the play of the game, making a sweet entry pass to Sarah Wright, who backed down a six-foot-two rival, stepped back and drained a short jumper.

Game one was a smoother affair, as the Wolves played like a well-oiled machine, moving the ball and looking for the open shooter.

Kellner popped for 10, including a long trey, while Littlejohn spent the game camped out at the free throw line after repeatedly drawing fouls on the Tiger defenders.

Everyone chipped in, with Lauren Grove hauling down six boards, Elfrank snatching away another two steals and the entire CHS team clamping down on defense.

The fall ball season gave the Wolves, who were coached by CHS hoops legend Sherry Roberts, a chance to mesh and work on new things.

Coupeville’s 11-woman roster featured a mix of returning varsity players, fast-rising JV stars and a newcomer in Elfrank, a South Whidbey transplant who’s joining the Wolf hoops squad after strong softball and volleyball seasons.

Grove, Kellner, Wright, Avalon Renninger, Mia Littlejohn, Maddy Hilkey, Kalia Littlejohn, Ema Smith, Tiffany Briscoe and Lindsey Roberts rounded out the Wolf roster.

Aimee Bishop, Kyla Briscoe and Ciara Smith helped Sherry Roberts coach.

Maddy Hilkey

Watch your digits around Granite Falls. Maddy Hilkey got bit in game two.

A little bit of sadness, then a whole lot of happiness.

That’s what Coupeville High School’s fall ball girls’ basketball squad experienced Sunday in Skagit County, as they split a pair of games with bigger schools.

After absorbing a 32-12 loss to 4A Mount Vernon, the Wolves rebounded with a fury in the nightcap, drilling 2A Granite Falls 36-14.

The split left Coupeville, one of the smallest 1A schools in the state, at 2-2 at the midway point of the fall ball season.

After a two-week break, the Wolves wrap things up with doubleheaders on Oct. 23 and 30.

CHS clicked in every aspect in game two Sunday, cutting down its turnovers, sharing the ball on offense and hitting the boards with a vengeance.

The Wolves roared out to a 17-5 lead at the half, then continued to stretch things out in the second half, with eight of 10 players scoring in the game.

Kailey Kellner popped for 12 to lead Coupeville, while Mikayla Elfrank and Mia Littlejohn chipped in with six apiece.

One big highlight was seeing freshman Avalon Renninger knock down her first fall ball bucket in the second half, getting a strong roar of approval from her older teammates.

The opening game wasn’t quite as thrilling, as difficulty breaking the press in the early going, and a cold shooting touch after the half conspired to hurt the Wolves.

While the halftime margin was just 12-5, Mt. Vernon got hot from the field after the break and refused to let Coupeville back in the game.

Littlejohn paced the Wolves with four points, five rebounds and four steals, while Kellner snared a team-high seven boards.

Tiffany Briscoe, Maddy Hilkey, Ema Smith, Lindsey Roberts, Lauren Grove and Kalia Littlejohn join Kellner, Elfrank, Renninger and Mia Littlejohn on the CHS squad, which is coached by Sherry Roberts, Aimee Bishop and Kyla Briscoe.

Abraham Leyva picked right back up where he left off last spring.

The Coupeville High School senior booter knocked in a goal Tuesday night at Granite Falls, the 26th of his prep career, but it wasn’t quite enough to save the Wolves.

Riding scores from Charlie Richards and Wyatt Long, the 2A Tigers edged their former Cascade Conference foes 2-1 in the season opener for both squads.

It was the first time Granite had beaten Coupeville on the soccer pitch since April 5, 2013.

The Wolves went 2-0-1 against the Tigers in their final league meetings before departing for the newly-crafted 1A Olympic League.

The two schools didn’t play last year.

Coupeville returns to action Saturday with a trip down the Island to face arch-rival South Whidbey, which lost 2-0 to Bush in its opener.

JV action starts at 11 AM, with the varsity scheduled for 1 PM.

The raced the rain and won.

Well, won the match. Not the battle with Mother Nature.

When Monday’s season opener hit a point that both coaches agreed to pack up the rackets and head under cover, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad had the lead and it goes into the books as a win.

A point here or there and things get flipped.

A day after dominating Olympic League rival Klahowya, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad made the long trip to Granite Falls Friday to face a former league rival and were nipped 4-3.

The loss, which dropped the Wolves to 1-2 on the season, hinged on a pair of ultra-tight matches at second singles and second doubles.

Sophomore Valen Trujillo, a relative newcomer to singles play, pushed Granite Falls senior Hailey Arndt to three sets and two-and-a-half hours of back-and-forth tennis, before falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Despite the loss, CHS coach Ken Stange was more than pleased with the effort of his young gun.

“This was the most closely contested match of the day,” he said. “Since day one of last season, Valen has given it 100%. Today was no exception.

Valen covered a lot of ground,” Stange added. “She is new to singles, and almost beat a 12th grader who’s been playing singles for two-plus years.

“I can’t say enough about how hard Valen battled. That kid has a bright future!”

The Wolves kept things close by taking two of three doubles matches, with the #2 team of Sage Renninger and Wynter Thorne earning Player(s) of the Match honors for their victory.

Sage and Wynter were on point today,” Stange said. “They balanced consistency and power.

Wynter has brought a great deal of leadership to our team, and Sage has infused our team with a great deal of talent,” he added. “Our top doubles players continue to grow. As the season progresses, we are going to pick up more doubles wins.”
