Dependable. Always.

Coupeville High School seniors Skyler Lawrence and Grey Rische have been rock-solid, as athletes and people, the past four years, and Tuesday night they got some sweet payback.

The duo were honored by photographer John Fisken, each taking home $500 thanks to money raised by sales of pics shot by John’s Photos this school year.

This is the fourth year Coupeville athletes have received the honor, with Lawrence and Rische joining past winners Jared Helmstadter, Sebastian Davis, Julia Myers, Aaron Trumbull, Breeanna Messner and Brandon Kelley.

To be eligible, Wolves had to play at least two sports for four years, carry a 3.0 GPA and not be receiving financial assistance from a college for athletics.

By pure luck, this year’s winners share the exact same birthday — Oct. 1, 1998.

Lawrence played basketball and was a track and field thrower her entire CHS career.

As a junior, she was part of a girls basketball squad which went to state, the first time the Wolf hoops program had made it to the big dance in a decade.

She also made it to state twice in the shot put, advancing as a sophomore and junior, while winning the sub-district title in the event three years running.

Lawrence advanced to districts or further in all three of her events — shot put, javelin and discus — during her prep career.

Rische, who follows in the footsteps of his brother (Helmstadter) by winning the photo scholarship, played tennis and was a track athlete.

During his time hanging around the oval, he proved a quick learner, competing in eight different events, running the gamut from hurdles to throws to relays to races.

As a sophomore he won a javelin title at the Olympic League JV Championships, an event in which Rische made it to sub-districts three times in his career.

He also made it to sub-districts in the discus, and was a huge supporter of his Wolf teammates every moment he was wearing the red and black.

On the tennis court, Rische was a strong double player, teaming up most notably with his brother.

Grey Rische wants the shirt off your back.

Well, not really. He’d actually prefer it if you gave him a brand new one.

Rische and other members of Coupeville’s Leo Club are running a clothing drive the first two weeks of Dec. and need your help to make it a success.

They want to collect NEW clothing items such as pants, socks, jackets, etc. and will donate everything to the Holiday House in time for the items to be distributed for Christmas.

Donations can be dropped off at the main office at Coupeville High School (501 S. Main) during school hours.

Birthday buddies Skyler Lawrence and Grey Rische at work. (Amy King and John Fisken photos)

One day, two superstars.

Oct. 1 delivered us a pair of top Wolf athletes in Skyler Lawrence and Grey Rische.

Actually three, if you count former CHS track and field sensation Dalton Martin.

But, once you graduate and move on to the real world, you generally lose your birthday celebration privileges here on Coupeville Sports (I need some time to myself…), so today the focus is on the terrific twosome still repping the red and black.

And they are two of our best, strong on the athletic field and winners in the classroom and out associating with the general public.

Skyler and Grey are easy to root for, and their continued success in all their endeavors reflects quite nicely on their town and their school.

Lawrence has been a beast on the boards for the Wolf basketball program and was part of last year’s team, the first to qualify for state in a decade.

I remember the first time I saw her play, back in middle school, and how impressed I was with her hustle.

She would sweep the boards clean, then beat the guards down the floor, every time without fail.

Not a straggler whatsoever, Skyler goes full tilt and is quite willing to get down and dirty in the dog-pile when necessary.

She also seems to have a great sense of humor, as she and running mate Allison Wenzel are usually giggling about something when not on the floor.

You scan the bench and there the two of them are, poking each other and exchanging private jokes, regardless of the score.

Skyler is also a supremely accomplished thrower for the CHS track team, a two-time state meet qualifier in the shot put who’s gunning for the school record.

Grey joins her on the Wolf track team, where he’s a jack of all trades, seeing time as both a thrower and a runner.

Toss in a stint as a basketball player (maybe he’ll return to the hard-court for his senior season?) and Rische is a well-rounded athlete.

His biggest success, though, has probably come on the tennis court, where he shines as both a doubles ace and a singles sniper.

For much of his career, he teamed with brother Jared Helmstadter, forming the Thunder and Lightning combo, until Jared’s graduation split them apart.

This season, Rische has teamed up with fellow Class of 2017 netter Jimmy Myers to form one of Coupeville’s most dependable doubles duos, and the one which remained undefeated the furthest into the season.

With CHS coach Ken Stange juggling a young lineup this year, Grey has also slid into a singles slot at times, and he’s more than held his own.

Providing a nice dose of leadership and calmness on the court, Rische is a key part of why the Wolves are circling their second straight 1A Olympic League title.

As the birthday buddies play out their senior year, I hope they both continue to accomplish great things and stay true to the classiness both have shown on a daily basis.

Happy birthday to both of you. May your cake day be awesome, and your final year at CHS even better.

Thursday brought sunny skies and the first meet of the season, a four-team rumble in Oak Harbor known as the Island Jamboree.

Hanging out around the oval was travelin’ photo clicker John Fisken, who provides us with the pics above.

“Bring out your glasses!! Or else we come and get them…”  (John Fisken photo)

You have a month to get used to seeing without your glasses, punk.

Cause once we get to Dec. 5 the Coupeville Leos are coming for your spectacles (all of them!) and there’s nothing you can do about it!

And … OK, I’m being told I’m a moron and I may have greatly misunderstood the situation.

Well, wouldn’t be the first time…

Apparently the Leos are not a street gang dedicated to terrorizing the myopic, after all.

Seems they’re a youth service organization, an offshoot of the Lions Club, and their pursuit of your (old and unused) eyeglasses is for a good cause.

Well then.

So, now, having actually read all the info, here’s what I can tell you:

The Leos, who in the past have included fine, upstanding members of Wolf Nation such as Grey Rische, Bree Daigneault, Joey Lippo and Sofia Hassapis, will be walking in Coupeville’s Greening Day Parade Dec. 5.

During the parade they’re hoping to obtain as many pairs of glasses as possible, and the glasses will be passed on to those in need.

So, all in all, a really good cause to mark on your calendar and not a reenactment of “The Purge.”

Probably next time I should read the whole press release before I start typing…
