It’s their time in the spotlight.

Registration is open for Coupeville Elementary School students who want to be part of this year’s Junior Cheer program.

Run by the Spirit of Cheer Booster Club, the event brings together the next generation of Wolves with current CHS cheerleaders.

Practice days are held on four straight Thursdays (Sept. 19 and 26, and Oct. 3 and 10), with the group performance during Coupeville’s Oct. 11 home football game against South Whidbey.

Cost is $70 per child, with each participant receiving new pre-fluffed metallic poms and a sweatshirt.

Online registration closes Sept. 16 at 7:00 PM, or when they hit the limit of 100 junior cheerleaders.

Triple digits, we’re talking triple digits.

There were 101 athletes (or was it 103?) on the field Friday night for Coupeville’s annual Junior Cheer performance, and that’s not counting the current Wolf spirit leaders.

Under the guidance of CHS cheer alumni Sylvia Arnold and Cavan Simonson, nearly every child of a certain age charged on to the gridiron as parents recorded the performance on their phones.

And yes, it got kind of loud on the prairie.

Of that you can be sure.

Tomorrow’s cheerleaders were ready for their closeups today.

After putting in the practice, 30 junior cheer participants took control of the hardwood Friday at halftime of the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball game.

Working with the current Wolf cheerleaders, the young women wearing “Power Cheer” shirts debuted to the click-click-click of a million lil’ cameras.

One of those belonged to John Fisken, who delivers us the pics seen above and below.

The future claimed the present.

Halftime of the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball game was dominated by the town’s junior cheerleaders, who showed up 30 girls strong Friday night.

After working with coaches Sylvia Arnold, Cavan Simonson, and Tiffany Hembree, the young squad delivered a “power cheer” performance honed by several weeks of practice.

Some of the young athletes will continue with the sport, someday replacing the girls and boys who currently wear CHS cheer uniforms.

Others will move on to other pursuits.

But, for one night, they were here, and they were loud ‘n proud.
