Double the birthday fun.

May 20 brings us twin birthdays (three, if we count former CHS cheerleader Katie Lovell), with Wolf frosh Tomi Herrera and senior Garrett Compton celebrating cake days.

The duo aren’t the same age, but they are connected by the day they popped into the world, and by the positive energy they’ve added to Coupeville sports.

Compton is more of a laid-back kind of guy, a soccer ace who has proven his ability to pop the ball into the back of the net over the past couple of seasons.

Working along side friends like Sebastian Davis, Garrett put in solid work as a defender and midfielder, playing soccer all four seasons at CHS.

Herrera is a relative newbie compared to him, but the younger sister of Wolf basketball star Brisa Herrera, Tomi made a huge splash during the fall cheer season.

Part of a talented pack of younger cheerleaders such as Gaby Halpin and Katherine Morales, Herrera brings energy, excitement and spirit with her every time she graces the sidelines.

While one birthday buddy is headed out the door, thanks to graduation, another has a nice, long run still ahead of her.

Tomi has spoken of playing tennis in high school (she played volleyball and basketball at CMS) and I hope she gives it a try in the coming seasons.

As the duo celebrate their birthday today, we just want to reach out to both and wish them all the best.

You both have left a mark at CHS, and deserve a huge helping of praise.

Happy cake day, Tomi and Garrett!

Brisa Herrera (John Fisken photo)

Herrera

Herrera locks out her rival as she eyes a rebound.

Brisa Herrera is deceptive.

Off the basketball court, the Coupeville High School sophomore comes across as serene, low-key and friendly.

Her quiet smile arrives before she does, and she projects a positive glow whenever she’s around.

On the court, though, she’s become a wild woman (and we love it), ripping balls away from foes and hip-checking her rivals into the stands with glee.

In the two years I’ve watched Herrera play for Amy King, I’ve seen her confidence soar and it’s been fun to watch.

A true scrapper who plays for the good of her team, often sacrificing for her teammates, Brisa is an easy athlete to root for, and an even better person, it would seem.

As she celebrates her birthday today, we, her many fans and supporters, want to wish her a great cake day.

And a great day every day after that, as well.

We look forward to seeing her game continue to soar in the next two years as she and her teammates continue to grow as athletes and determined young women.

Happy birthday, Brisa. Keep on kicking fanny and taking names.

Birthday buddies Lauren and Kayla Rose.

Birthday buddies Lauren (top, left) and Kayla Rose.

Kindness is underrated.

There are two prairie Roses celebrating a birthday today, and, as they continue to bloom into huge successes as athletes, it’s important not to forget that they are so much more.

Yes, Lauren and Kayla Rose, twin sisters and CHS sophomores, play huge roles in the world of Wolf sports.

But the reason we as a community are so proud of them, so fond of them, is because they are, at their core, amazing young women, on and off the field.

They exude a genuine sweetness and show such love and kindness to those around them, especially their family and friends, that you can’t help but be impressed.

They never seem to do it for mere show or to win points.

They do it because that’s who they are, and they do it equally in the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

Kayla and Lauren have benefited greatly from having an extremely strong support crew, through their family and church, but their light would shine through no matter what.

Covering sports, you meet nice people and mean people, those who think of others and those who focus intently on themselves.

You can be a super-nice person and be a dud as an athlete, and you can be a jerk and soar (at least in terms of wins and losses).

Once in awhile, though, you get to see the great people rewarded and that makes things sweeter.

The Roses achieve that perfect nirvana of talent, success and a spirit which makes others grateful for that success.

As the duo live out their school sports days here on the prairie, we are really, truly blessed, as fans and onlookers, to be a small part of that.

We smile a little bigger, cheer a little harder, for Lauren and Kayla and their friends, because they earn it, every day, with the class and grace of true stars.

In the end, none of the scores really matter all that much.

When we look back at past CHS athletes, what is remembered more than accomplishments, is who they were as people.

We’ve still got a nice, long run ahead of us with the Rose sisters, but I already know, when we look back at them later, we will do so with great pride.

Happy birthday, Keebler Elves. From all of us.

Ashlie Shank

Ashlie Shank: A legend in her own time. (John Fisken photos)

The force is strong with this one.

Coupeville High School freshman Ashlie Shank has a lot to live up to, following in the footsteps of older brothers/gentlemen around town Matt and Brian and her dad, Dr. Jim Shank, the snappiest Superintendent in school history.

But, to no one’s surprise, the youngest Shank may surpass them all (plus her older siblings who never got a chance to attend CHS).

Ashlie, in her time here in Coupeville, has set the gold standard for being an exceptionally smart, kind, friendly young woman who also happens to go full tilt in the athletic arena.

She’s a fast-rising star in the basketball world, where her gentle exterior barely masks the killer who lurks inside.

Whether she’s shanking (heh heh) Klahowya with a buzzer-beater that blew the roof off the CHS gym or throwin’ elbows down low while pursuing a rebound, Shank is the kind of eager young player Wolf coaches David and Amy King love.

Toss her on the track oval this spring, and she’s won over the other King, Randy, consistently bringing her times down and signalling her willingness to try whatever events the track guru asks of her.

When she’s not competing, Shank is almost always to be found in a gym or camped on the bleachers outside, supporting her close friends and random classmates alike.

She might not be as loud as some of her companions, but Ashlie is as dedicated as any of them in her support, and is always willing to go the extra mile for any wandering photographers, which makes her especially well-liked here at Coupeville Sports.

Like her brothers before her, she has been a true gift to our town. Utah’s loss continues to be a boon to Cow Town.

As she celebrates her birthday today, we just want to take a moment to wish the very classy Miss Shank the happiest of cake days. And add the hope that all of her days are just as note-worthy.

We are very lucky to have you grace our school and town with your presence.

Two big cheers for Wolf cheerleaders Maddy Neitzel (top, left) and Julie Bucio (bottom, right), as they celebrate a joint cake day.

Two big cheers for Wolf cheerleaders Maddy Neitzel (top, left) and Julie Bucio (bottom, right), as they celebrate a joint cake day. (John Fisken photos)

They are loud ‘n proud, two pint-sized wonders who pack a big cheer punch.

Coupeville High School cheerleaders Maddy Neitzel and Julie Bucio are separated by a couple of years in age (the former is a senior, the latter a freshman), but they’re united by their birthday and their bright, shining spirits.

You couldn’t ask for two friendlier, more outgoing, smart and kind young women to rep our town.

As key members of the Wolf cheer squad, the duo were front and center at a ton of games this school year, and they both radiated school spirit and a love for inspiring their classmates and local fans.

Working as hard as anyone at CHS, the duo, and their cheer teammates, have consistently proven they should be viewed in the same light as other Wolf athletes, since that’s what they are — athletes.

Away from the arena, both display big skills in the classroom (science calls to Bucio while Neitzel is all about art), and, when I interviewed them for articles, a love of family was what drove both of these strong young women.

As the duo celebrate their joint cake day, we, the fans who see a slice of their lives play out in front of us, want to send both of them big happy birthday wishes.

Maddy, Julie, you are both amazing and I have no doubt you will continue to scale new heights as you move forward with your lives.

Happy birthday, ladies!
