The early days of Sparky.

A legend is born.

Without Sparky, would there even be a Coupeville Sports?

Jenn Spark, who hits the big 1-8 today, is part of the CHS Class of 2016, the athletes who were just about to step foot into a high school classroom in August 2012 when I left the newspaper world and kicked off my online adventure.

Over the last 41 months, that batch of Wolves, from Makana Stone to Wiley Hesselgrave, Sylvia Hurlburt to Jared Helmstadter and far beyond, have given me countless stories and put up with my written shenanigans along the way.

Through all the highs and lows, Spark has been one of the brightest-shining of my “stars.”

A masterful soccer player, whether taking the pitch as a Wolf or as a member of various Whidbey Islanders select squads, Jenn has been nothing short of electrifying.

She has a cannon for a leg, and when she launches a ball from deep in her own zone, an entire stadium often goes quiet.

The rare defender who can, and will, score on you from anywhere on the field — she once banked a ball off of a goaltender’s head for a score from almost mid-field — Spark made soccer exciting.

And let me be the first to admit, the “beautiful game” has never particularly been one of my favorites.

Call me a heathen, but the intricacies of the game often fly over my head.

I understand baseball, basketball, football, etc. better, and when I was growing up, youth soccer wasn’t the obsession it is today.

But I can, and do, appreciate, watching a player like Jenn take over a game.

A dominant defender who lifted her fellow players, who held them together even in the face of teams like ATM, King’s or Klahowya, Spark never gave anything less than her best to her beloved sport.

The day she suffered a devastating on-field injury remains a haunting one, but the way she fought back, the way she never gave in, has always been truly remarkable.

Returning to the field, one leg encased to look like a bionic weapon, Jenn never coasted, never played tentatively.

There were countless moments this past season when the greatest entertainment at a soccer game was seeing how many times CHS coach Troy Cowan would hyperventilate as Sparky did the splits or slid under an onrushing player in pursuit of the ball.

Off the field, Jenn always comes across as a genuinely nice person, someone who deeply cares about her family, friends and teammates.

Smart, well-spoken and modest about her undeniable talent.

On the field, Spark, who earned All-Conference honors and deep respect from rival players and coaches, made me rethink the game.

I still don’t understand all the little side rules soccer has, and am still not sure how people can get so dang excited over a scoreless tie, but Jenn Spark made me a believer.

When she was on that pitch, doing what she did, crushing the ball, directing traffic, willing her teams to excellence even when she could barely move, Sparky earned every last cheer.

As she moves forward, I hope she gets the chance to play college ball if that’s what she wants. She has given so much to the game, and I hope it keeps giving back to her.

But, whether it’s soccer or something else, I have no doubt Jenn will leave an indelible mark wherever she goes.

So, thank you, Miss Spark, for four years of teaching me soccer could be entertaining.

For four years of always answering my questions about your injuries, even when you certainly had better things to do with your time.

For helping to make Coupeville Sports what it is, and for always doing it with great grace and style.

Happy birthday, Jenn.

Kiara Burdge: A cheer force of nature. (John Fisken photos)

Kiara Burdge: A cheer force of nature. (John Fisken photos)

Burdge has a big megaphone and she's not afraid to use it.

Burdge has a big megaphone and she’s not afraid to use it.

Kiara Burdge exudes cheer.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, is among the most outgoing, full-of-life athletes to be walking (or skipping) across the campus.

Much like older sister Kylie, she is an absolute force of nature when at the forefront of the Wolf cheer squad.

Some people mouth the words and do the moves, while others believe in cheer deep down in their souls, and Kiara has always seemed like the second sort.

Her kicks are just a little crisper, her yells a little louder, her faith in the classmates she supports just a bit deeper than the average cheerleader.

There never seems to be a moment when she is anything other than sincere and committed to the cause.

Miss Burdge lights up the sidelines with her presence and it carries over into the real world, as well.

Aaron and Trina Burdge have four children who greet each new day as an adventure, and, from what I have seen, take great delight in being part of a fun-loving pack.

With Kylie off in college these days, bringing her spark and love of life to the Brigham Young University campus, Kiara has taken the helm of the younger Burdges and proven to be a worthy leader in her own right.

As fans, we only see a slice of the Wolf athletes lives, but it still allows us to get a pretty good feel for what kind of people they are.

With Kiara, as valuable to the CHS cheer squad as she is — if she’s not named a captain next year, my jaw will never reattach itself after falling off my face — she’s ten times the person.

Smart, deeply caring to her friends and siblings, committed to her Mormon faith, Burdge is a shining star in our community.

She is one of our best and brightest, and, as she celebrates her cake day today, I hope Kiara knows how highly everyone thinks of her.

Happy birthday, Miss Burdge. May your star keep twinkling for a very long time, getting brighter with each new year.

Jazmine Franklin, lighting up the universe every day. (John Fisken and Jazmine Franklin photos)

Jazmine Franklin, lighting up the universe every day. (John Fisken and Jazmine Franklin photos)

Most days at Coupeville High School, it seems like there are two suns hung in the heavens.

There’s the real sun, and then there’s Jazmine Franklin, who easily outshines the star above.

The Wolf senior, who celebrates her birthday today, radiates pure joy every time I see her.

Even when she’s fully invested in playing the role of a stone cold killer while posing for photos with cheer running mate/best bud Maddy Neitzel, Jazmine can’t help it — she makes the world a happier place with her presence.

Frankly, there’s nothing Franklin can’t accomplish when she sets her mind to it (at least as far as I’ve seen).

Bouncing madly from cheer to tennis to guiding the school’s executive board, she nails everything she does, while dispensing dollops of joy everywhere she goes.

Every single time I have seen Jazmine, the first thing you notice is how everyone in her immediate vicinity is smiling. It never fails.

She seems to bring out happiness in others, and she remains one of the most enduring fans her fellow Wolf athletes have.

If there’s an event, she’s there, game in, game out, and not just for a quick moment or two.

She’s loyal to her friends and classmates and backs them every step of the way.

Based on what I see and hear, I can’t help but think that, as talented as she is now, we have only begun to see the tip of what Jazmine will accomplish.

We turn around a few years from now, as she wows the entire world, and it will be easy to say, “Told you so.”

I don’t see any limits on where she goes and what she accomplishes.

Miss Franklin is truly one of those rare people who will soar as high as she chooses to reach.

And the best part is, how happy all of us will be for her, because she emits such serene joy into the universe and deserves to receive it back.

Happy birthday, Jazmine.

I hope your cake day is an awesome one, and I hope you keep spreading joy for many more.

Dec. 27 is a red-letter day for Wolf Nation.

At least five current and former Coupeville athletic stars popped into the world on this date, and that’s just the ones I know about.

Tennis/basketball two-way terror Marie Hesselgrave and soccer whiz kid Will Butela have moved on from CHS, so today we’ll restrict the focus to the trio who were still smack-dab in the middle of their prep sports careers — rising stars Gabe and Ty Eck and established record holder Lauren Grove.

The Ecks are only freshmen, yet have already had an impact from day one.

Both were immediate starters for the Wolf varsity football team in the fall, with Ty excelling as both a defensive back and receiver.

After an early-season injury to Hunter Downes, Gabe stepped into the most pressure-laden role on the field, quarterbacking a squad that had more than its share of problems blocking.

Despite running for his life a good deal of the season, the young hurler put up impressive numbers while learning under fire — stats which weren’t that far off from what senior Joel Walstad had compiled the season before.

Now the talented duo are deep into basketball season, and, after that, it’s expected they’ll punch their three-sport-athletes card with soccer.

Both brothers have talent for days, and, as they continue to get seasoned and fully discover what they can do, should become leaders on all their teams.

That’s a status Grove has already grown into, having matured from a talented young athlete to a confident, seasoned “old pro.”

Lauren is the very prototype of the three-sport athlete, having played something in all eight seasons she’s been in high school.

After two years of volleyball, she transitioned to soccer this fall and shocked a few people by becoming an immediate shut-down goaltender, despite having little experience.

Everyone knew she had speed (more on that later) but she also demonstrated smooth hands and an ability to read (and turn away) opposing shooters, and her growth as the season progressed was one of the biggest takeaways from a Wolf pitch squad which tied the school record for wins.

Now she’s a vital part of a CHS girls’ hoops squad which is cruising at 5-2 (including a tourney title at the Friday Harbor Tip-Off Classic) headed into a showdown with perennial power La Conner.

A ferocious ball-hawk, Grove gives the Wolves a zing on defense, while also beginning to show a willingness to step up and drop buckets on folks.

The perfect complement to Coupeville’s Big Three (Makana Stone, Mia Littlejohn, Kailey Kellner), it’s scrappy role players like Lauren who will decide how far this edition of the Wolves go.

And we haven’t even gotten to her real claim to fame, which is track.

An elegant, explosive runner, Grove already sits on the school’s record board, after being part of a transcendent relay team as a sophomore.

Before she made that cut, Lauren walked past me in the CHS gym hallway one day and pointed up at the school records, some of which have stood for three decades.

“That’s where my name is going to be,” she said, then softly smiled and skipped away.

Then she went out and backed up the (slight) boast in style, accepting congratulations but never crowing about how she had been right.

And that’s Lauren, a low-key, super-friendly (she’s never met a camera she couldn’t charm) young woman, fiercely loyal to her family and friends, one of the true bright, shining stars of Coupeville sports, for her spirit as much as her undeniable skills.

She is very easy to root for, because she is, at her core, just a great person first, and, if the Ecks want a role model as they begin their rise up the ladder, they couldn’t go wrong with emulating the girl who shares their birthday.

So, to all three of you, the established legend and the fast-rising stars of tomorrow, happy birthday. I look forward to all the highlights still to come.

Can’t celebrate Christmas without cheering on Allison Dickson.

Seriously, cause the Coupeville High School senior was born on Christmas Eve and her legend has just grown from there.

A dedicated part of the Wolf cheer squad, Allison rose to the captaincy this year, where she and Sylvia Hurlburt were benevolent (and loud ‘n proud) rulers.

As she celebrates her birthday today, Dickson is a vital part of one of Coupeville’s best sports families.

The Dicksons (older brother Jared was a Wolf football and soccer standout who is now off on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, while lil’ sis Lainey is also a key member of the CHS cheer squad) have always been class acts.

I would assume parents Randy and Lisa are proud of the trio, who reflect extremely well on their family, their town and their faith.

I can’t say that I know the Dicksons all that well on a personal basis, but as a fan, always lurking there in the background with an eye on things, I have been absolutely impressed with them.

You could use a lot of words to describe today’s birthday girl, words like exuberant, cheerful and a leader.

But if you had to pick one, and stay with one, it is that — class.

Dickson has exuded that every day, in every way, during her time on the sidelines at CHS.

She comes across as a smart, dedicated young woman, open to helping others and a great role model for young cheerleaders just coming up through the system.

Allison shines now, and I have little doubt she will go on to amaze us all in her future endeavors, much like her brother before her, but, while she’s still here, due respect should be paid for the way she conducts herself on a daily basis.

She is one class act, and she makes her town and her school better for her presence.

I know this from what I see and also from what I hear from other fans.

Happy birthday, Miss Dickson, and thank you.

Whether you realize it or not, your fan club is huge and all of us wish you the very best, today and every day.
