It was the biggest meet of the season.

The 32nd annual Gear Up Eason Invitational, held Saturday at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Snohomish, drew in 81 teams covering three states and two countries.

While the majority of schools involved came from Washington, there were also representatives from Utah, Idaho, and British Columbia.

Coupeville High School athletes, who normally compete in the 2B classification, hailed from the second smallest student body of the day, with only Lummi Nation trailing the Wolves.

And yet, the CHS boys finished 41st in the team standings, thanks to senior thrower Logan Martin.

After opening the meet Friday by winning the hammer throw exhibition, he returned Saturday to claim 5th in the discus and 7th in the shot put.

Fellow thrower Carolyn Lhamon was the other Wolf to crack the top 10 in an event, finishing 10th in the discus.

4A Redmond and 2A Sehome won the girls and boys team titles, respectively.

After a long day, CHS coaches came away pleased with the effort shown by their athletes — both those in competition and out.

“Our athletes ran, jumped and threw with all their heart,” said Wolf girls coach Elizabeth Bitting. “Lessons were learned, experiences had and their desire for more rose!

“Their focus for what they want to do and need to do to get there has been finessed.

“Very proud of their dedication and smiling attitudes. It was great to have athletes who did not participate in today’s invite head out and cheer their teammates on! We are all one team!!”

Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, Apr. 30, when it travels to Lakewood for the Sunny & 70! Invitational, a modest 24-team scrum.

Then it’s on to May and the postseason run, with league, district, bi-district, and state meets ahead on the schedule.

We’ve come for all the PR’s

Their time will come.

Facing off with a long-established track and field powerhouse Thursday, the Coupeville High School boys team came within one first-place performance of upending host Mount Vernon Christian.

But while the Wolves came up just short, with the Hurricanes edging them 152-146.5 at an 11-team meet, a statement was made.

Slice a few seconds here, get an inch or two higher there, have an athlete or two nail a PR, and the tables will turn.

Maybe not today, but soon, very soon.

At the league championship meet, at districts, at state, perhaps?

The suspense builds as the Wolves get right back to work.

The strong showing from the CHS boys was the highlight of the day, but a Wolf girls squad which wasn’t quite as deep in numbers also came away looking pretty good, as well.

Coupeville’s girls claimed a pair of individual wins en route to finishing third in the team standings with 88 points, trailing just La Conner (144) and MVC (137).

The meet, held at Mount Vernon High School, featured athletes from four Northwest 2B/1B League schools, with Friday Harbor joining Coupeville, MVC, and La Conner.

Non-league rivals Grace Academy, Lopez Island, Crescent, Shoreline Christian, Fellowship Christian, Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace, and Lummi Nation rounded out the competitors.

Coupeville finished with 35 PR’s on the day, with Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Ja’Kenya Hoskins (long jump), and Aidan Wilson (800) finishing atop the trophy stand.

The Wolves have a break in their competition schedule, as they don’t compete again until April 16, when they travel to North Kitsap for the Lil Norway Invitational.

Dominic Coffman finished 2nd in the high jump Thursday as the Wolf boys battled powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian to the very end in the team standings.

Big meet, big results

“It was a crazy day.”

The Coupeville High School track and field team survived and thrived Saturday at the nine-team Port Angeles Invitational.

By the time the day was done, the Wolves had collected 10 individual wins — including a tie — and set 39 PR’s, all while dealing with a year’s worth of weather compressed into a few hours.

“Weather wise, (we had) wind, rain, hail and sun!” said CHS girls coach Elizabeth Bitting. “As one athlete put it, ‘Each event had different weather’.”

The invitational, which featured four 2A schools, a pair of 2B schools (including Coupeville), and three 1B schools, ran varsity and JV versions of every event.

Schools were limited to one entry in each varsity competition.

The 2A schools, with much-deeper rosters, dominated team scoring, with Sequim winning the varsity boys title, while tying with North Kitsap for the girls crown.

CHS was third in varsity girls and fourth in varsity boys.

On the JV side, Port Angeles (girls) and North Kitsap (boys) stood tallest, with both Wolf squads finishing fourth.

Coupeville emerged from the meet with six varsity crowns and four JV ones.

Senior Logan Martin (shot put and discus) topped the individual varsity winners, with Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Aidan Wilson (800), and Lyla Stuurmans (triple jump) ruling their events.

On the JV side, Lhamon (discus), Knoblich (long jump), and Cristina McGrath (triple jump) won, with the duo of Caleb Meyer and Nick Guay tying for top honors in the high jump.

It was a quick turnaround for Coupeville, which competed at a Northwest 2B/1B League meet in La Conner Thursday afternoon.

But rested or not, the Wolves stepped up.

“The athletes are finding their groove and achieving more PR’s,” Bitting said.

“We are proud of their efforts today and would like to give a big shout out to the parents who volunteered to help the meet run smoothly.”

“Thank you to all my teammates”

“As a senior you realize how fast time flies.”

The words come from Abby Mulholland, but they echo those often said by Coupeville High School hoops stars as they watch their final moments on the hardwood zing by.

Mulholland and her fellow 12th graders — players Ja’Kenya Hoskins, Audrianna Shaw and Izzy Wells, as well as managers Mckenna Somes and Leni Raduenz — were honored Saturday before the regular season girls basketball finale.

Also noted was Wolf cheerleader Samantha Streitler.

In between the hugs and tears, the plushie bears and the balloons, and before the Wolves dropped a whumping on visiting Friday Harbor to collect a playoff berth, Coupeville’s elder stateswomen shared their love for each other and the CHS program.

“I’ve played for Coupeville my entire career and I have loved every single team that I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of,” Shaw said.

“So thank you to all my teammates, old or new, for being by my side and helping me and the team succeed.”
