Jared Helmstadter soars to the heavens to snatch a rebound.

Kailey Kellner

Kailey Kellner (42) keeps her eye on the rebound, and her hand ready to poke La Conner’s player in the kidney. It’s why they call her “Killer.”

This has been the weirdest basketball season ever.

At least in terms of the schedule, which is all over the place.

Long stretches of absolutely no games, then teams playing three times in four days, then long stretches of nothing … and repeat over and over.

We’re currently in our last stretch of nothingness, with the CHS girls (8-3) sitting for nine days again.

The Wolves last played Jan. 9, when they trounced Mount Vernon Christian, and they don’t return to game action again until Jan. 19, when they travel to Chimacum.

The Coupeville boys (5-6) are sailing through a relatively “short” break, with five days between their win this past Saturday and a home game Friday against Stevenson.

That will be varsity only, though, so the Wolf JV boys will get to replicate the girls stretch of no on-court competition, sitting from Jan. 10-18.

So, to tide you, the fans, over, a few pics to remind you of what game action looks like.

Cause it’s the closest you’ll get to the real thing for a bit.

7th grade

The Wolf 7th graders, already believing they own the gym hallway.

They are the future and the present.

Many of the guys on the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball squads are players who will one day stand at center stage as Wolf high school players.

But, as they rumble through their early days, they are also already photographic stars, thanks to travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Making a surprise visit to CMS Monday, he snapped a stream of pics as the Wolves clashed with Port Townsend’s Blue Heron Middle School.

A selection of his work can be found above, and, if you want to see more (and possibly purchase some, thereby helping fund college scholarships for CHS student/athletes) pop over to:

“You go out and kick some butt for mama, lil’ pookie!!”

Sometimes I think they could skip playing the games altogether.

Just open the gym, put folks into the stands and let travelin’ photo man John Fisken loose with his camera, and all would be well.

Cause, long after the scores have faded, the pics remain, painting a portrait of Wolf Nation.

rebound

The battle for the rebound prepares to get epic, as The Twin Towers — Ryan Griggs (far left) and Ford — prepare to unleash Hell.

In control of their destiny.

As they head into a new year, the CHS boys’ basketball players are in prime position.

Even with a non-conference loss to La Conner Wednesday, the Wolves are a solid 4-4 and sit atop the 1A Olympic League at 1-0.

With the other three league schools all trending downward this season, now is the time for Coupeville to make a statement.

As they prep for three games next week, take a moment to marinate in some of travelin’ photo man John Fisken’s work from the La Conner game.

They’re getting in rarefied air.

Having bounced powerhouse La Conner Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad is a shiny 6-2 headed into the new year.

As they turn the page to 2016, we take one last photographic gander at the Wolves in action, thanks to travelin’ photo man John Fisken.
