They are the stars of tomorrow, and they’re pretty dang good today.

Romping to a huge win over Orcas in their opener Saturday, the Coupeville 6th grade boys’ SWISH basketball team looked impressive.

Along for the ride, camera in hand, was frequently-traveling photo bug John Fisken, who provides us with the pics above.

The one-timers got their feet wet.

Hey, I give them credit. Going into the waters of Whidbey on Jan. 1 is not for the faint-hearted.

And, having just pulled out of a two-week battle with the flu (you notice I only get sick when I’m NOT swimming in Penn Cove), I was not among those who made a Polar Bear Plunge to start the new year.

But, as someone who has braved Penn Cove (in just a swimsuit) more than 1,000 times over the last four years, as early as March and as late as December, let me be the first to say “Hey, where did everyone go on Jan. 2?”

And then they can eyeball me and say, “Where were YOU on Jan. 1?”

Nicely played.

The paint was on lock-down.

With Wolf big men like Matt Shank and Aaron Curtin dominating the area around the hoop, the Wolf boys thrashed host Concrete by 40 Tuesday.

They also dominated the field of vision for travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who shocked the world by traveling down to catch the game in person.

I mean, who in their right mind wants to go to CONCRETE?!?!?

No one. That’s who.

But Fisken did, and, for that, we thank him.

Julia (John Fisken photos)

Sylvia

Makana

Foolish girl, you can’t catch Makana Stone in a foot-race.

Wynter

Wynter Thorne knows what’s what. “I mean, are they raising idiots over there? NO ONE beats Makana!!”

Julia

You can try and drive the paint against Myers, or you can just gracefully give up and pray for mercy like the girl on the left.

Rose

“We believe in Judy!!” Lauren Rose (left), Lindsey Roberts and Kayla Rose (right) have joined the movement.

Julia Myers is a saint.

Sometime next year she’ll be off in college, or ruling a third world country as a ruthless dictator, and she’ll look back and think, “Why did I put up with this?”

And by “this” I mean my determination to build her into a legendary super hero, a rampaging, elbows-throwing wild woman who, leg brace and all, is scarring a generation of high school hoops players.

In reality, Judy is actually one of the sweetest, friendliest people you will ever meet, as easy-going as they come.

But she is willing to do the dirty work on the court, and — so far at least — she’s willing to put up with my inanity.

So, let’s keep this crazy train going.

To see more of Myers being freakin’ awesome and her teammates doing their level best to match her, pop over to:

The combined forces of the rapidly-rising Wolf boys’ basketball programs.

Halfway there.

The Christmas break has thrown a 10-day gap between games for the Coupeville High School hoops squads.

The last time the Wolves suited up was Friday, Dec. 19, when they traveled to Orcas and brought home four wins in four games.

The next time: Monday, Dec. 29, when the CHS girls host Vashon.

And then we’ll be right back at it, with the Wolf boys traveling to Concrete Dec. 30 and a doubleheader at La Conner Jan. 2.

With both Coupeville squads boasting the most overall wins of any 1A Olympic League team (the boys sit at 2-5, while the girls are a strong 5-3), the “second half” of the season promises to be an intriguing one.

As you wait, a few photos of the faces of Wolf basketball, courtesy the hardest workin’ man in camera land these days, John Fisken.
