They play for first-place.

When the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad takes the floor Friday night (4:45 JV/6:30 varsity) to face Klahowya, it’ll be the first 1A Olympic League game of the season.

League rivals Port Townsend (0-3 in non-conference play) and Chimacum (0-3) will take turns playing non-league foe Blaine this weekend.

So, while the Wolves (1-4) and Eagles (0-4) may not have stellar win-loss records, the victor will have sole possession of the top spot in the conference — at least for a night.

To get you prepped, here’s a smorgasbord of pics of the Wolves in action, courtesy John Fisken.

The action was sizzlin’.

Whether on the court or off, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball players were their usual dynamic selves Monday as they faced off with Mount Baker.

Working the sidelines to capture the moments, big or small, for you, was travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Elbows were thrown.

Monday’s tussle between the JV girls’ hoops squads of Coupeville and Mount Baker was a physical one.

The visiting Mountaineers were aggressive, and, once a few Wolves got over their initial trepidation, it became a push-and-shove-and-bounce-folks-off-the-hardwood event.

Working the sidelines to catch all the intensity was photo man John Fisken, who provides the pics residing above.

sister

Taylor Herreman (left) and her lil’ sis bond.

Taylor Herreman is beloved at Christopher’s on Whidbey.

When she’s not busy studying at Gonzaga or traveling around the world, spreading wonder and merriment, the Coupeville High School grad camps out at the local restaurant.

When she does, she is a favorite of her co-workers, upper management and customers alike.

So, as we approach Christmas, it would be ideal for those of us who work with her when she’s in town to send her something in appreciation for occasionally sprinkling her awesomeness on the joint.

But what to give?

You could come up with a million things or more and they’d probably all be fine, but there is one thing that I, in my dual role of Christopher’s wage slave and Coupeville Sports kingpin, can best deliver.

So, here it is, a smorgasbord of snappy, never-before-seen photos of Taylor’s favorite lil’ sis, Julia “Elbows” Myers, aka Judy.

Being off to college, Taylor can’t be there for her sister’s basketball games — epic throw-downs where Julia channels her inner Dennis Rodman (ferocious defensive beast) on the court and her outer McKayla Bailey (irrepressible camera magnet) off the court.

Now, thanks to these photos, she can see what she’s missing.

Merry Christmas, Taylor, from everyone at Christopher’s.

For all you do, this Elbow (of Julia’s) is for you!

I’d say about 12% of the fans at any high school basketball game are actually dialed in and watching the game with full attention.

Other than those die-hards, it’s all about hopping around, seeing and being seen and finding ways to amuse yourself.

Of course, games also offer the chance for family and friends to come out and support the players.

In the pics above, travelin’ photo man John Fisken has captured a bit of everything, from the families to the support crew to the folks just looking to amuse themselves.

Put the photos above together and they create a mosaic of Wolf Nation, in all its diverse glory.
