It was a good old-fashioned beatdown, in every way.

Squaring off with La Conner Friday night, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad skipped the three-ball, racking up one of its best offensive showings of the season while relying on two-point field goals and free throws.

Leading from start to finish, the Wolves romped to a 64-30 road win, capturing their third victory in their last four games.

It’s the third time this season Coupeville has put up 60+ points in a contest, and the first time they have done so without the three-ball.

Instead, the Wolves made 24 field goals and rippled the nets on 16 of 23 charity shots.

Brad Sherman’s squad is now 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 4-6 overall, with a busy week ahead.

The Wolves travel to Auburn Adventist Academy this coming Monday, before hosting Darrington Friday and Napavine Saturday.

They’ll head into that three-game stretch coming off of a solid team-wide performance, with eight of the 10 players who saw floor time at La Conner racking up points.

Coupeville blew out to a 19-6 lead by the first break, before really ramping things up with a 22-4 run in the second quarter.

Up 41-10 at the half, the Wolves got plenty of playing time for everyone in the second half, while coasting in with 13-10 and 10-10 performances across the game’s final two quarters.

Senior big man Camden Glover dominated, throwing down a game-high 18 points to pace CHS, while sweet-shooting sophomore Carson Grove netted 13 and senior Chase Anderson banked in 12.

Carson Grove drives to the bucket.

Aiden O’Neill (6), Liam Blas (5), Davin Houston (4), Malachi Somes (4), and Riley Lawless (2) also scored, with Nathan Coxsey and Easton Green rounding out the rotation.

On a night when the Wolves shared the scoring load across the board, three players achieved personal milestones.

Anderson, who now has 765 career points, slides past Hunter Hammer (755) into 18th place all-time for a CHS boys’ program which launched in 1917, and is hot on the heels of Barry Brown (769) and Jack Elzinga (770).

Meanwhile, Glover cracks the 200-point club and sits with 213.

And Blas, a sophomore who has been relentless on the boards for the Wolves, dropped in his first varsity points.

He’s the 433rd Coupeville boy who I’ve been able to document doing so, and with his five-point performance, already finds himself in a tie for #397 all-time.

Jayden McManus knocked down 17 points Friday night in a big road win. (Julie Wheat photo)

Jayden McManus was locked into seek-and-destroy mode.

As were his teammates as well.

Sparked by a game-high 17 points from the three-ball-happy McManus Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad crushed host La Conner 52-32 in a wire-to-wire win.

The road victory lifts the young Wolves to 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-5 overall, and has them on a two-game winning streak.

Next up is another trip, this one to Auburn Adventist Academy Monday, before CHS welcomes Darrington to Whidbey Island next Friday for a league clash.

Squaring off with La Conner, the Wolves came out ready to rumble, jumping out to a 16-3 lead at the first break.

McManus poured in six points in the opening frame, one of five Coupeville players to score in the game-busting assault on the hoop, and things were well underway.

While La Conner hung tough to battle to a 9-9 tie in the second quarter, the Wolves added to their lead in the second half, outscoring the Braves 12-8 and 15-12 across the final two quarters.

CHS hit four shots from behind the three-point arc, with McManus ringing up three of those successful splashes.

Liam Lawson added the fourth trey and he, Josh Stockdale, and Nathan Coxsey each scored six to back up McManus and Khanor Jump, who knocked down 12 points.

Brian Thompson (2), Jaden Flores Garcia (2), and Trent Thule (1) rounded out the offense, with Chris Zenz and Ayden Warren also seeing floor time for the Wolves.

No games for you. Or you. Or even you.

Maybe.

The Northwest 2B/1B League is basically taking a week off for Christmas, with the only basketball contests currently scheduled for next week being a pair of non-conference rumbles Monday for La Conner.

Well, that was true until just as I went to publish this story, a game was slipped on the schedule for Tuesday, Dec. 23, sending the Coupeville varsity boys to water-logged Concrete for a “non-conference game against a conference foe.”

That makes up a bit for the Wolves losing their two-game trip to Eastern Washington this weekend due to troublesome weather at the passes.

But, other than that, the hoops landscape is bare until the following week, when a fairly busy New Years week slate of games kicks off Monday, Dec. 29.

Included in that is a trip to Meridian for the Coupeville varsity girls, who are scheduled to play three games in three days Dec. 29-31 at the Trojan Storm Classic.

Though, even as you read this, anything and everything could be changing – tis the season to use a pencil and not a pen to write down scheduling info.

With that in mind, a look at where things presently sit:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 2-0 5-0
MV Christian 1-0 3-2
Concrete 0-0 0-4
Darrington 0-0 3-2
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-6
La Conner 0-1 0-5
Coupeville 0-2 1-5

Northwest League girls’ basketball:

School League Overall
La Conner 1-0 4-2
MV Christian 1-0 4-1
Orcas Island 1-1 4-3
Concrete 0-0 3-1
Darrington 0-0 0-3
Friday Harbor 0-0 1-5
Coupeville 0-2 1-4

It was a little rougher this time around.

Last year, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad remained undefeated until the final day of the season and brought home a program-best 4th place trophy from the 2B state tourney.

While a rebuilding Wolves squad didn’t make it back to the big dance this fall, the Northwest 2B/1B League sent four squads to state, but none could match what CHS did last year.

All three 2B schools in action — Mount Vernon Christian, La Conner, and Orcas Island — went two-and-out at the Yakima SunDome.

MVC had the best showing of the trio, falling 3-1 to both Onalaska and River View, while Orcas lost 3-1 to Rainier and 3-0 to Tri-Cities Prep.

La Conner failed to win a set, being swept 3-0 by both Manson and Toledo.

In a fairly huge upset, #8 seed Northwest Christian (Colbert) won the state title, bouncing Freeman in the finale.

Overall, only three of the eight 2B schools which claimed a trophy last year earned more hardware this time around.

Freeman jumped from 3rd to 2nd, Manson tumbled from 1st to 4th, and Davenport finished 7th once again.

2025 trophy teams Adna, Coupeville, Rainier, Liberty (Spangle), and Colfax were replaced by Northwest Christian, Lind-Ritzville-Sprague, Toutle Lake, Tonasket, and River View.

Meanwhile, in the 1B state tourney, Darrington went 1-2 and got knocked out one match shy of playing for a trophy.

The Loggers, who were NWL champs this season with an 8-0 record in league play, opened state with a 3-1 loss to Almira-Coulee-Hartline, rebounded to beat Valley Christian 3-1, then were eliminated 3-1 by Taholah.

In another upset, #3 Garfield-Palouse won the 1B crown, while top-ranked Oakesdale didn’t make it to the championship tilt.

CHS boys’ soccer won four out of its final five games at home, capping things by thumping La Conner Thursday night. (Julie Wheat photos)

They were in it to the very end.

A young Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, which had no 12th graders to honor on Senior Night, was still fighting for a playoff spot in the season finale, proof of the scrappiness of a new-look roster.

And while the Wolves just barely missed out on that postseason berth, it was through no fault of their own, as they ran visiting La Conner off the field Thursday night in a campaign-closing 4-1 win.

With the victory, its fourth in its last five games on the pitch at Mickey Clark Field, CHS finishes 3-5 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-9 overall.

Defending state champ Orcas Island (8-0), Mount Vernon Christian (7-1), Friday Harbor (6-2), Lopez Island (5-3) and Providence Classical Christian (4-4) will rep District 1 in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood, Grace Academy, and La Conner finish in a logjam at 1-7 in league play, two games off of Coupeville.

Having finished his first season at the helm of the CHS boys’ pitch program, Wolf coach Jim Kunz sees a bright future for the booters.

Coupeville can return every player on its roster, with 12 of 15 players being sophomores, freshmen, or 8th graders.

“One of the biggest things for us was seeing the 8th graders step up and show they can play high school ball,” Kunz said. “We’ve got potential for our future years, and for building a really strong program.”

A growing number of Wolves have committed to playing select soccer and putting in off-season work, and while the team had no seniors, coaches used the opportunity to praise their three junior captains — Sage Arends, Solomon Rudat, and Sam Richards — for providing leadership to the young guns.

Sage has been leading on and off the field,” Kunz said in pre-game comments.

“He’s a powerhouse on the field and spends personal time keeping teammates up to date on practices and games.

Solomon is a graceful player on the field and has a knack for maintaining his temper and composure,” the coach added.

Sam is an amazing goalie and vocally leads the team.”

It’s a war on the pitch.

While La Conner had little left to play for, the Braves put up a good fight in the first half Thursday, forcing the Wolves to scramble to reclaim the advantage.

Coupeville got on the board fairly early, as Edmund Wilson slapped a shot past the La Conner netminder less than three minutes into play.

Unfortunately, for the Wolves, they wouldn’t score again for nearly 40 minutes.

La Conner evened things at 1-1 thanks to a well-placed penalty kick, while Coupeville’s own chance to ring up a goal on a first-half PK slammed into the crossbar and bounced away.

Richards kept the game knotted up with several strong saves, including one in which he dove to spear a dangerous ball off the top of the grass, and the Wolves finally rediscovered their magic touch.

Arends slipped in the go-ahead goal in stoppage time, sending CHS into the break with a 2-1 lead, before Wilson came back around to punch in two more scores in the second half to net the hat trick.

With the late rush, Wilson finishes the season with eight goals, putting him one ahead of Arends in the race to lead the team.

With older bothers Aiden and Cael each scoring 13 times during their prep careers, the Wilson brothers have combined for 34 goals, second-most for one family in CHS boys’ soccer history.

Who are they chasing?

The Leyvas, as brothers Abraham (45 goals) and Aram (29) netted 74. Toss in Cousin Derek (38), and the number grows to an uncanny 112.

Arends also nabbed a bit of Wolf pitch history for himself, as his goal was the 10th of his high school career, making him the 14th CHS boy to crack double-digits.

Final season scoring stats:

Edmund Wilson – 8
Sage Arends – 7
Brian Thompson – 2
Edmund Kunz – 1
Liam Lawson – 1
