Landon Roberts was dealin’.

The Wolf sophomore spread the love Tuesday night, dishing out 12 assists as the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team thunked visiting La Conner 58-30.

The victory, keyed by a 23-0 run in the third quarter, stretches the squad’s winning streak to nine games and counting heading into the season finale.

The Wolves sit at 10-3 on the campaign, with a road trip Friday to Friday Harbor the cherry on the sundae.

Tuesday’s rumble with the Braves marked the final home game for Coupeville’s rising stars, and they controlled things from start to finish.

Six different Wolves made the net jump in the opening quarter, netting buckets as CHS bolted out to a quick 14-8 lead.

From there, Coupeville stretched its advantage to 23-13 at the half, before dropping the hammer during a stellar third quarter.

Aiden O’Neill tickled the twine for seven points coming out of halftime, with Hunter Bronec, Jack Porter, Camden Glover, and Malachi Somes also scoring during that aforementioned 23-0 shellacking.

Coupeville hit from all angles in the game, raining down five three-balls, with Somes and Hunter Bronec netting two apiece.

The Wolves, or at least Glover, were also spot-on at the free-throw line, where the Wolf freshman went a perfect 5-for-5 en route to scoring a game-high 13 points.

Jack Porter (10), O’Neill (9), Hunter Bronec (9), Johnny Porter (6), Somes (6), Hurlee Bronec (3), and Roberts (2) also scored, with Yohannon Sandles and Carson Field rounding out the active roster.

O’Neill’s final point of the night was his 100th of the season, making him the second Wolf JV player to hit triple digits this year.

He joins Madison McMillan, who has tallied 121 for the CHS girls’ team.

They’re still the hottest team in the land.

Holding off a dangerous Mount Vernon Christian squad Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team ran away with its sixth-straight win.

Closing the game on a 15-6 tear after surrendering the lead for a hot second midway through the fourth quarter, the Wolves held on for a 58-50 victory to sweep the season series with the Hurricanes.

Hunter Smith’s team of two-way hoops stars are now a crisp 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-3 overall.

The only thing that can stop them right now is a school simply declining to play them, which is the case next week, as Concrete shut down its JV team after iffy grades and lingering injuries gutted its roster.

So, while Coupeville’s varsity will play twice in a four-day span, the JV won’t be back in action until Friday Harbor visits Whidbey Island next Friday, Jan. 27.

Until then, the young guns will keep fine-tuning an offense which can kill you from every angle.

Eight Wolves tallied a bucket or more Friday, and they did it in multiple ways.

Down low in the paint, from behind the arc, and even, once in a while, from the free throw line.

Hunter Bronec got things kicked off, burying a three-ball in the game’s first minute, and the two teams battled to an 11-11 stalemate at the first break.

MVC bolted back in front, for a half second, opening the second frame with a three-ball, but there was no bend, and no break, in the Wolves spirit.

An 8-0 run featuring buckets from Hurlee Bronec, Jack Porter, and Chase Anderson broke things open, while Hunter Bronec came back around to splash home another trey late in the half.

The Hurricanes are a scrappy bunch, however, and they never let Coupeville fully pull away.

Up 28-23 at the half, the Wolves saw their lead shrink to 38-36 exiting the third quarter, though still felt good about it, since they ended the frame with Johnny Porter snagging a loose ball and bolting to the bucket for a score.

Exchanging buckets back and forth, the two teams circled each other warily in the fourth quarter, with MVC slipping ahead at 44-43.

That was the moment when the Wolves, to a man, stepped up and drilled their rivals.

Camden Glover knocked down back-to-back buckets — one off of a board, the other on a long outlet pass from Aiden O’Neill — before Jack Porter sank a gorgeous jumper from the side.

The final dagger was a three-ball from the just-mentioned Jack Porter, the ball settling through the net with a happy sigh as the Hurricanes could do nothing but wail.

While Coupeville struggled at the line, hitting just 12 of 32 charity shots (MVC was an equally sickly 9-24), the Wolves hit them when it mattered most.

Landon Roberts netted a pair of free throws, with Hunter Bronec and Glover sinking one apiece as CHS scored the game’s final four points at the line.

Glover led an extremely well-balanced scoring attack with 13 points, while Hunter Bronec and Jack Porter each tossed in nine.

Roberts (8), Johnny Porter (8), O’Neill (7), Anderson (2), and Hurlee Bronec (2) also scored, while Malachi Somes brought defensive heat while on the floor.

Improvement every day.

The Coupeville High School JV baseball team couldn’t pull out a win Wednesday, but it did put up a strong fight on a day filled with cruddy weather.

Unable to dig their way out of an early hole, the Wolves fell 13-5 to visiting Oak Harbor under an onslaught of cold rain.

The loss evens Coupeville’s record at 3-3 on the season.

Oak Harbor came off the bus ready for action, tossing a quick two runs on the board in the top of the first.

After that, the Wildcats added four more tallies in the second and five in the top of the third to build an 11-0 lead.

Coupeville’s young guns fought back, however, putting together their best offensive showing of the day in the bottom of the third.

Landon Roberts strolls home.

Base-knocks from Landon Roberts, Cole White, Peyton Caveness, and Camden Glover helped the Wolves push four runs across the plate.

CHS added a fifth score in the bottom of the fourth and final inning, giving the Wolf coaching staff continued hope.

“The bats are still alive at the JV level,” said Coupeville hardball guru Jon Roberts. “Happy to say we continue to put the bat on the ball.”

The Wolves finished the day with four hits, while also putting six runners aboard thanks to walks.

Aiden O’Neill, Caveness, and Seth Woollet each eked out a pair of free passes thanks to sharp eyes at the plate.

Coop Cooper, O’Neill, and Landon Roberts — two 8th graders and a freshman, respectively — handled pitching duties for the Wolves.

Coupeville returns to action Saturday when it travels to Bremerton to face Olympic High School.

The rim was a relentless foe.

Despite getting plenty of strong looks at the basket Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team struggled all night to get the ball to stay in the bucket.

That, combined with an opportunistic Friday Harbor defense, doomed the Wolves during a 58-28 home loss.

The defeat drops Coupeville’s JV to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 1-5 overall.

The Wolves came out cold in the mid-week game, and the visitors took advantage, claiming a lead they would never relinquish on the night’s very first bucket.

Down 8-0 in the early going, Coupeville got back within 12-8 right before the end of the first quarter, only to see Friday Harbor net a three-ball to end the frame with an exclamation point.

The best Wolf bucket in the early going came on a swooping layup by Johnny Porter, who snagged a crisp entry pass from Ryan Blouin and beat his man to the rim.

But Coupeville was never able to put together back-to-back buckets in the second or third quarter and saw its deficit mushroom.

Trailing 26-13 at the half, the Wolves slipped behind 38-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nick Guay caressed the net on a pair of three-balls, then added another one in the final period, but Friday Harbor used an aggressive defense to force frequent turnovers, frustrating Hunter Smith’s young team.

CHS hung tough, however, putting together a 7-0 run late in the fourth quarter to keep the visitors honest.

Guay finished with a team-high 13 points, including his trio of treys, while Jack Porter knocked down four points in support.

Blouin (3), Hurlee Bronec (2), Johnny Porter (2), Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim (2), and Mikey Robinett (2) also scored for the Wolves, while Carson Field, Landon Roberts, and Hunter Bronec also saw floor time.

Roberts, playing as proud mom Sherry beamed at him while working the scorer’s table, was ferocious on defense.

Even with his team trailing big late, he remained scrappy, scrambling back the length of the court to trip up a Friday Harbor ball handler and make away with the ball.

Landon Roberts was a standout on defense.
